He was aware enough of this to get off on trolling the class, though.  Whenever some force diagram in a homework assignment needed to be weightless, instead of being some generic spacecraft it would be “Mir” specifically.  And he’d always use ‘cosmonaut’ instead of ‘astronaut’, that kind of thing.

One day about halfway through the semester, he’s doing this with in-class examples on the board, and one of the students finally gets up the guts to troll back a little.  So this kid shouts from the back of the auditorium, “Hey professor, what’s the difference between a cosmonaut and an astronaut?”

Jujutsu Kaisen fandom is huge in its illiteracy. Like, peak. People are consuming a media where the author, Gege Akutami, creates a whole, entire complex and morally gray world and storytelling, there are themes such as rape, murder, cannibalism, manipulation, grooming, necrophilia, suicidal ideation, and the piece entirely is about loss of body and mind autonomy, and yet — fucking yet — an idiot will crack their fingers and write entire paragraphs of the stupidest shit ever about how a fanfic author or an artist is a bad person because they are writing about the characters created by Gege, while they will be making excuses for liking other characters created by the same author. In the same story.

They will come at you for liking whatever ship or character that they deem “problematic”, they will call you shit for creating fiction where complex themes are being written about while being blind to the media they claim to love. But they will again and again pretend they don’t see the same themes happening in it.

You will write a fictional story with age gap, or incest, or grooming and they will say you are a predator, meanwhile there’s Ui Ui and Mei Mei right there. They will tell you it’s messed up if you write about rape, and Kenjaku is THERE. They will say “oh if you like yuuji with anyone but megumi you are a creep those are minors this is a crime” while jerking off to Sukuna and Geto, who are a mass murderer cannibal and a genocidal cult leader, as if… those things are not crimes? But wait! They will say, wait! Those are fictional crimes!!! Whereas the other ones that THEY get to decide are not. They go as far as saying that if you ship two fictional dolls together you are almost a pedophile! But if they enjoy mass murderers or rapist dolls they are not even considering those things in real life, because uh… fiction, duh! Some fiction is more fiction than other fiction, in their sick dumb mind.

Anyway, no one is a bad person for writing and indulging in fictional subjects. If you are able co critically consume and create media with complex subjects, it only means you are a very good author that can and will explore subjects that go beyond the mass media ones.

If you aren’t capable of detaching fiction from reality nor consume a piece of media with critical thinking, I’m sorry for you. You won’t ever be a great author because you won’t ever be able to create meaningful things that resonate with people and their complex fucking feelings. Consider picking up books and reading old authors. Consider studying for real and understanding literature. Consider dropping whatever stupid echo you hear from twitter and tiktok and tumblr and actually going after the answers you seek on google and trusted sources, studies, articles. Consider that being pro-censoring books and media pieces is, and will always be, fascist like thinking and you can even die from crying about it, it doesn’t change the reality of it.

Dealing with illiterate people who police others about fiction while they won’t EVER talk about helping real victims, real people, won’t ever talk about real problems and raise awareness about real fucking crimes is akin to dealing with death. The person won’t suffer their own idiocy, only the ones around will smell the rotting and sometimes even be upset by the loss.
