Ah yes, the three genders
It’s been many years since I’ve been into a second hand bookshop, but this feels really, really believable as shelf labelling. Just the most idiosyncratic places in the world.
Story time:
In middle school biology, we did an experiment. We were given yams, which we would sprout in cups of water. We then had to make hypotheses about how the yams would grow, based on descriptions of yam plants in our books, and make notes of our observations as they grew.
Here’s what was supposed to happen: we were supposed to see that the actual growth of the plant did not resemble our hypotheses. We were then supposed to figure out that these were, in fact, sweet potatoes.
What actually happened was that every single student in every single class lied in their notes so that their observations perfectly matched their hypotheses. See, everyone assumed the mismatch meant they had done something wrong in the process of growing the plant or that they had misunderstood the dichotomous key or the plant identification terminology. And, thanks to the wonders of a public school education, everyone assumed the wrong results would get us a failing grade. We were trying to pass. We didn’t want to get bitched out by the teacher. Curiosity, learning, science - that had nothing to do with why we were sitting in that classroom. So we all lied.
The teacher was furious. She tried to fail every student, but the administration stepped in and told her she wasn’t allowed to because a 100% fail rate is recognized as a failure of the teacher, not the class. It wasn’t even her fault, really, though her being a notorious hard-ass didn’t help. It was a failure of the entire educational system.
So whenever I see crap like Elizabeth Holmes’s blood test scam or pharmaceutical trials which are unable to be replicated or industry-funded research that reaches wildly unscientific conclusions, I just remember those fucking sweet potatoes. I remember that curiosity dies when people are just trying to give their superiors the “right” answers, so they can get the grade, get the job, get the paycheck. It’s not about truth when it’s about paying rent. There’s no scientific integrity if you can’t control for human desperation.
There's a kindergarten near my house and a sometimes they play this cleaning up song at an absurd volume so I'm sitting inside and can hear "pick it up! Pick it up!" and every time I think "that's not a bad idea actually" and obey the cleaning song.
clearly some of you have not been to the labyrinth of pestilence deep beneath kentucky
alright so when I was a teenager I went to this bug-themed summer camp for socially stunted nerds and on the way back from it I visited the university of kentucky. I met with an entomologist there and while we were touring the department he asked "wanna see something cool?" so he took me down an elevator to what must've been a sub-sub-sub basement on a card-access only floor, and after turning several more corners we went through two sets of (I'm not even exaggerating) 12-inch thick doors, opening onto one long as fuck corridor. each side of this hallway was lined with about 50 refrigerators. and each and every single one of these refrigerators was filled with hundreds of thousands. of live. bedbugs. the very reasonable explanation for this was that they were doing research on insecticides and needed to test them on real samples, but they could not under any circumstances allow them to escape, so they had to be kept under area 51 levels of overkill containment. but reasonable or not that was very much not what I anticipated seeing that day. so yeah. I decided after that I did not want to become an entomologist
absolutely baffled to get to the end of that story and hear you decide NOT to be an entomologist but possibly that's the entomologist in me speaking
as this breaches containment it is vital to me that The People know my problem with the bedbug labyrinth was NOT the bedbugs. that was obviously sick as fuck. the problem was it dawning on me how much entomology research is anti-bug instead of pro bug. weird girl equivalent of realizing how much time veterinarians spend putting down dogs

This isn't even a joke it's just what we do
the number one lesson that toddler parenting is teaching me is the power of adjusting your attitude so you can get silly. if I am in a bad mood or at the end of my rope patience-wise my toddler senses this IMMEDIATELY and actively turns every single interaction into a protracted power struggle. but if i can take a second to gather myself and marshal juuust enough strength to do a goofy little bit or even just make a silly face he is sooo so delighted and can usually be easily persuaded to do whatever he was resisting two seconds earlier. tonight he was testing meeeeeeeeee oh my god WHY must everything be a battle and then I invented a game called BOOM where I swing him around and drop him on the nearest cushioned surface and this game was such a wild hit that we did our entire bedtime routine in five min just by trading bedtime tasks for one (1) boom. and then he was in such a silly happy mood it put me in a better mood and now I don’t feel as exhausted. idk it does take some effort to rally when you’re not feeling inclined to be silly but then it consistently saves soooo much time/energy in the rest of your interactions I think it’s worth it. plus it’s crazy how much goofing off with somebody for a few minutes resets your nervous system.
just saw a pigeon doing the puffed up courtship dance thing to another pigeon, and as he was strutting around he suddenly stopped for a split second to do a very brief preen-peck at his own side, then returned to the strutting around. and i surprised myself by instantly losing respect for the male pigeon in that moment, like come on man i appreciate you had an itch or whatever but how is she supposed to feel special when you're getting distracted by bullshit like that? which on reflection i don't endorse, i mean those are pretty harsh dating norms i'm imposing on these pigeons, from a total outsider perspective, for no reason. probably not all girl pigeons are as uptight about that sort of thing as i would apparently be if i was a girl pigeon, maybe she even found it endearing who knows, i don't know her. it's none of my business really. sorry pigeons.
IDK who needs to hear this but if there's something in your life that makes you feel better, but you never stick to it,
it's still actually perfectly fine to do it
and you shouldn't stop yourself from starting just because it won't be a permanent change.
Like if starting a new daily planner gives you an amazing afternoon of planning and four days where you feel in charge of your life,
why not do it?
It doesn't matter that it won't be a permanent change - 4 good days is still worth it.
If you ever catch yourself thinking, "I wish I could pray/stretch/prep/plan/do the thing, but I always get started on that and it never lasts more than a couple of days,"
what this really means is, "hey, I can feel better for a couple of days."
if this post is making you think of things in your own life that you wish you could stick to because of how good they make you feel,
just be aware:
you're not thinking of a list of ways you've failed to commit
you're thinking of a list of things that make you happy, and you should give yourself permission to start doing them as often as you want to
Saw this twitter post and instantly started looking for pictures of Stratt to use it with

The UK’s Crown Prosecution Service have gotten far more wholesome than I remember. How lovely.
Get so fucking real, the princess is not unbuckling the knights armor. The knights squire is going to unbuckle the knights armor and the princess is simply going to wait in her chambers for it to be done. You're mistaken if you think the princess is going to touch your field armor.
Great, now I ship the squire who helped the knight out of his armor with the lady-in-waiting who had to explain the basics of intercourse to the princess while undressing her and taking her hair down.
They are so stressed and tired, it had been a long day even BEFORE the drunken king gave his blessing for the tournament winner to be wed to his daughter and everyone suddenly had to scramble up a royal wedding. Now they just want a cup of wine and a lie-down, but they've got to be within earshot in case the lovebirds get in over their heads.
They're just sitting on the floor in the servant's passage keeping half an ear open for Bad Noises, passing a bottle back and forth and trading tidbits of info on the sir and lady. Secretly impressed that the other can keep up with their drinking. She's a decade older than him but her first husband died ages ago and left her some money, so she's still a catch. And his master just married as up as you can go, so his own fortunes are looking quite promising.
At some point they stop talking and just look at each other, tired and smirking and a little drunk. It's been a fine day, full of horses and crowds and celebrations, and as they lean in to each other, it seems to be shaping into a fine night as well.

@sherbertilluminated there's a line somewhere in Ursula Vernon's Digger that goes something like "it is difficult to be metaphysical around the truly geologically minded"
It's always been "fittest" as in best fitting.
Interestingly enough, people only started to associate the word "fit" with the meaning of "athletic" or "healthy" after the phrase "survival of the fittest" was coined.
It also wasn't Darwin who came up with the phrase, but Herbert Spencer after reading Darwin's On the Origin of Species in 1864.

Billionaires can't play by the rules of society.
I think, some days, of a post I saw on livejournal - if not before - that used a trick of paragraphs to fool you to thinking it was just a post, but sadly, you're already toast, for it's, in fact, a verse of hallelujah.
