Forty hours deep into Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and just realized something. This is not a game for That Guy.
If you’ve been in the ttrpg community, you know what I mean. The kind of player who willingly creates characters or situations that are antithetical to the rest of the party. The one who ignores the social contract of the table, having fun at the others expense. In crpg terms, That Guy ignores dialogues and complains when their companions hate their guts.
Datv works narratively only on its own terms. You are asked to create a character that Varric saw as a potential leader and successor against Solas. And the game, in character creation and at the Lighthouse, guides you to construct them. There are many questions throughout the game, that define your Rook’s past and relationship with the world.
If you roleplay, you can connect with arguably a set of very nuanced and well written companions. Side quests often act like conversations, shifting from your companions’ conflict to yours. Taash can’t understand their identity in the terms of the Qun, does your Qunari and/or trans Rook feel the same? Harding loathes the Evanuris for what they did to the titans, how does your Elf Rook see it? This is not a philosophically deep game, but compared to old Bioware classics and Baldur’s Gate 3 (as most folks have done), Veilguard actively expects and rewards your roleplaying first; while the metagame, the tactics of parry frames and number crunching, they come second.
To enjoy the game, you need to follow the social contract. Which is what all crpg ask of you. The Witcher demands of you the role of Geralt, Gothic is a game based on faction, in Kingdom Come Deliverance Henry can’t join a wizard school. Veilguard does not pull tricks, you can always refund the game.
