hello calling the doctor who fandom!
does anyone have any good fanfic recommendations? iâll read anything as long as itâs not smut just throw them at me
Some of my recommends:
Flibbertygigget - mostly deep lore stuff
MrSandman - really great characterisation
penumbra - short fics with exceptionally vivid prose
fortunefavourstheyogurt -Â great little Big Finish orientated stories
RobertSaysThis - best known for writing a great series where the Thirteenth Doctor has a child as a companion
dragonwings948 - extremely prolific writer - if you can think of it, theyâve probably written it!
bravest_person_in_wonderland - writes character-focused short stuff, predominantly about Eight and Charley or the Gallifrey crew.
And of course, myself. My most substantial work is my series following Twelve and Sally Sparrow, but I also write some gimmicky shorts and I have a Thirteen/Yaz story that might actually be turning into a series...
picture this: the doctor regenerates at the end of an episode, without companions. you don't see their new face. the next episode opens with two people who are dressed identically, locked in a room, and have had their memories temporarily erased. you assume that one of them is the doctor, but no one knows, so you're forced to intensely examine all of their actions, words, and decisions for the rest of the episode as they escape the prison.
this could go many ways, and all of them are delicious:
- one of them is the doctor, and the other is their new companion
- one of them is the doctor and one of them is the master, but from the decisions they made, you assumed that each was the other
- neither of them is the doctor, and the doctor arrives at the end of the episode to rescue them both and invite them to be (two already complex, fleshed-out) companions
Youâre thinking too small!
What if theyâre both the Doctor?
I donât mean consecutive Doctors, I mean... what if the regeneration process split the Doctor in two? These are both equally valid versions of the Doctor with slightly different personalities.
Also... donât stop at two!
I remember an old writing prompt that suggested five Time Lords (the Doctor, the Master, and some boring ones) all travelling together in the TARDIS, when it crashes, and they all regenerate. The simultaneous regeneration causes their memories to merge and they all lose their sense of self. Which one is which? Well, youâve got a whole series to work that out...
Happy birthday Colin Baker!
To celebrate the day, I have uploaded a reworking of âJosephâs Coatâ to ao3! Check out âJodie and Selves/Colinâs Coatâ here!

Are you familiar with the Dr Who Iceberg chart? As daft as that question may be. There are several. Most of them are kind of shite but I found a MASSIVE one on R/DoctorWhumour (a lot of a subreddit) and it was amazing.
I'm not that deep into iceberg charts personally, but I recently enjoyed this breakdown video, or at least the parts I watched. I was very flattered to see that some projects I've contributed to were included not once but twice in the bottom tier ("The Greater Key is the Moment" and "Hidden General Wiki")!
As far as I can tell, this one (by imgur user DrVesuvius) is the earliest instance of the meme, and it already mentions the Greater Key.
This one by Reddit user /u/AphexCubed seems to be the deepest. Itâs clearly had a lot of effort put into it despite some strange placements.
Iâm thissss close to snapping and making a full on Sarah Z style hour long YouTube video on the fall of superwholock and why doctor who holds up when SPN and Sherlock did not. Spoilers: you could tell from the in universe representation of the fans with SPN and Sherlock adding fangirl insert characters shown to be stupid obsessive queer and crazy whereas the doctor who fan insert -osgood- was a hero who represented what it means to be human. Supernatural made fun of destiel shippers IN THE SHOW Sherlock called fans who speculated about Reichenbach Fall stupid and crazy (both shows making fun of the fans for being queer as well) where as osgood is nerdy, excitable, socially awkward and above all else, kind. Osgood is offered a position as a full time companion and she says she wants to go more than anything but she has to stay here, defend the earth, to which the doctor replies âby the way, Iâm a huge fanâ THIS SPEAKS VOLUMES ABOUT THE TREATMENT OF FANS BY THE SHOW!! Doctor who the show and the doctor the character love the curious unique individuals who are interested in the adventures of a madman with a box who choses to help people and believes all life is special. Between Johnlock, Reichenbach, Destiel, Charlie, the musical episode, and the destiel confession supernatural and Sherlock have showed time and time again that they actively hate their audience (if you were around for the final episode of Sherlock you remember how bad it was for fans and i donât need to remind anyone of âall gays go to hell all cars go to heavenâ )
Something also has to be said for the fact that doctor who is the only show of the three without a huge decade long queer baiting (ok the whole Clara thing is on thin ice Iâll be honest but they fixed that with bill in season 10) scandal that ends in blatant homophobia (note itâs not homophobic BECAUSE destiel or johnlock didnât end up together, itâs homophobic because of the years of intentional queer baiting that predates the end of each program) when your fan base is predominantly queer this is not advisable.
And of course this doesnt take into account the massive change that happened after dashcon, doctor who had an established 50 year history by that point and solid writing so while it fell from its godlike position on tumblr it was still relatively popular after that cultural shift. Also- and this may be controversial - the writing in doctor who is better. Iâm sorry but it is. Rewatching some of the 2010-2015 episodes Iâm reminded that when doctor who is good, itâs GOOD. The oncoming storm speech. The 9th doctor and the dalek prisoner, âI would neverâ , a good man goes to war, âthe laws of time obey meâ , the fucking 50th war doctor speeches, the zygon inversion speech, âthe one thing you never put in a trap⌠meâ, all of hell bent, and of course the Van Gogh episode. Honestly on writing alone doctor who absolutely bodies Sherlock and supernatural which is shocking because moffat wrote for Sherlock as well but it never felt as powerful it always felt very clever but once you knew the answer to whatever mystery Sherlock was solving the intrigue just faded. Whereas the more you watch episodes like Vincent and the Doctor, the Day of the Doctor, or Hell Bent, the more you fall in love with the writing.
I could go on and on and on for ages about writing, character relatability , overarching themes and morals, the unique mechanic of regeneration, the doctor companion dynamic, and the question of âare humans inherently good or evilâ and so many more nuanced reasons as to why doctor who stands the test of time (pun only slightly intended) but I will not that is too long and I am tired but know that I could if I wanted because the evidence is there
Tldr: doctor who isnât bad you guys are just mean
you could tell from the in universe representation of the fans with SPN and Sherlock adding  fangirl insert characters shown to be stupid obsessive queer and crazy whereas the doctor who fan insert -osgood- was a hero who represented what it means to be human
I mean, there are some pretty mean-spirited fan insert characters too - Larry Nightingale is not exactly an aspiration, and the Abzorbaloff is way worse than anything in Sherlock. Both of those were based on specific prominent fans (author Lawrence âLarryâ Miles and former continuity consultant Ian Levine).
That said, itâs true that Doctor Who at its best does absolutely body most television.

New short!
New short story inspired by that line up on ao3!
Extract from chapter 3 of The Wildthymes Are Killing Me:
The bus screeched to a stop just down the road, and reversed the wrong way back up to where Laoise stood. The front door concertinaed open. The driver, an elderly woman wearing a wide-brimmed red hat with matching scarf and lipstick, looked Laoise dead in the eyes.
ââScuse me, love,â she said, in a vaguely Northern accent that was hard to place. âYou wouldnât by any chance happen to be Laoise Sparrow, would yer?â
I must be dreaming, Laoise thought. She tried to make something of this lucidity, take some control of the dream world, but nothing happened. She tried to shake herself awake. No dice.
âYou OK, love?â said the bus driver, applying the handbrake and getting out. âItâs OK, Iâm not one of those weirdos who goes around⌠you know.â She extended a velvet-gloved hand. âIris Wildthyme. Transtemporal adventuress, meddler, artist, glamourpuss, grandmother of hedonism, Otley Run world record holder, auxiliary Timeâs Champion, and inspiration for the universeâs longest-running episodic science fiction series.â
Laoise shook Irisâs hand, dumbstruck.
âEy, look, this might be a bit much for you to take in right now, but what dâya think about the 1980s? Any residual cultural nostalgia? Dâya wanna go? Live Aid, Star Wars, the Atari, recreational drugs hitting whole new highs, and also, donât want to worry you, but if you donât go history may implode. A breakdown of causality, a twisting of universal logic, entire lifetimes erased from time, and a serious risk that humanity may never invent Grindr.â
âAre you crazy?â Laoise asked.
âWhat does that matter? Iâm a wanderer in the fourth dimension, I potter about in the fifth, and Iâve been known to drift through the sixth when Iâm feeling particularly brazen. Youâve got to trust me, pet, this is dangerous business. Ey, Iâm licensed, if that helps?â

The Doctor, of course, knew exactly where they were.
âManchester. September 2067. Hamilton Academicals are top of the SPL, but Kilmarnock will go on to win the league. Weâve just missed the hundredth anniversary of the summer of love. Last year was the hundredth anniversary of Englandâs first World Cup win and the thousandth anniversary of the Battle of Hastings. And November 2063 was the hundredth anniversary ofâŚâ
