Not to be weird and cheesy on main- but there is something so fun about joining a community as old as the Star Trek community. Like, you can come across a blog that hasn’t posted in five years that had the EXACT opinion you had on an episode of television that came out 20+ years ago. You can read literal articles about Kirk and Spock from 40 years ago that are perfectly trenchant to now. And there is SO much LORE! So many different cultures and worlds have been fleshed out by the fans and by the creators. If you want to, you can watch decades of a universe trying to figure out how to be multicultural and all of the bumps along the way.

And yeah, they fuck up a lot- they take big swings and sometimes they have big misses. Both as the creators and as a fandom (the reputation of some Trek fans as gate keeping and sexist isn’t exactly false). But the shows themselves? Sure, they’re all made in the context of their time. But it is SO wonderful to see them even try to think about a world beyond what we know. To ask hard or even weird questions.

And it is even more wonderful to know that decades of people have looked at the exact content you have and added their analysis and personality and flair on top of it. Idk- I know this is like… weirdly earnest when I’m describing a show that has plots like “Chekov got turned into a hexagon” but its one of those communities where you can really feel the weight of all of the wonderful people who have loved it before you.

I guess what I’m saying is Star Trek is Real: “Real isn’t how you are made,’ said the Skin Horse. ‘It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real.’

Also, she doesn’t fall for the mysterious brooding antihero. She thinks that guy’s a twerp. She falls for the guy who loves his sister a lot, is kind to his servants, isn’t rude to the Gardiners and who acts completely differently to the brooding antihero before apologising for his past behaviour and acknowledging that her put down of him was extremely well deserved.
