For me the hardest part about coming out wasn’t that I was doing it on live tv(TLC, “This is Life Live”), it was the unexpected reactions from my teammates and family. I’ve played baseball my whole life and I was fortunate enough to play at Azusa Pacific University and even more fortunate to be able to play professionally in Europe and in Australia. The thought of my teammates from around the world finding out that I am gay was horrifying. But the depression and loneliness that came with hiding who I really am for 25 years built up for too long. It was time for me not to care what others think and time to put my mental health first. I know there are others out there (Athletes and non athletes) that are struggling with their sexuality just as I did. My biggest hope is that those who are struggling can hear my story and know that they are not alone. And for the athletes who are struggling, I want them to know that my biggest supporters after this whole process have been my teammates! My teammates from around the world were some of the first ones to call/message me telling me that nothing changes and I am still the ball player they have always known me to be. My family have been nothing but accepting and supportive. My moms only concern was that she wishes I would have told her sooner so that I wouldn’t have had to go through this alone. I’m the happiest I have ever been now, just knowing that I don’t have to lie anymore to anyone especially myself. (at Phoenix, Arizona)
