prescription: murder columbo is indeed almost entirely columbo. most of his idiosyncrasies are in place; he's simply younger and more inexperienced. he's still got the essence of the character and all of peter falk's affability and everyman charm.

they were definitely correct to take the character in that direction because no-nonsense detectives are a dime a dozen. and we like a little nonsense.

i say that because a lot of people (my dad included lol) watch the first episode and say, well that's just not Columbo! with good reasons: he's unusually sharply-dressed, clean-cut, more straightforward, and most notably gets a bit aggressive with the murderer's accomplice.

LEMME GET UHHH NUMBA SIX WITH FRIES AND UHHHH

i attribute this aggression to lack of experience. it's not because he's actually losing his cool, but because it's a legitimate, albeit shitty tactic--he's attempting to rattle her and telegraph to her that she has no way out of this mess. older columbo would've handled this exchange much more smoothly and subtly, but it makes total sense to view this as younger columbo being just a little more wet behind the ears, still honing his craft.
