EmpressâŠthe PhoenixâŠit has been detected on EarthâŠ. At leastâŠwe think it is the Phoenix. The power is undeniableâŠ
How could this be? The Phoenix disappeared after the incident with Jean Grey.
 You do not thinkâŠ
Could it have passed off some of its power onto a Terran?
Diana sat quietly on the outskirts of the devastated city. Her heart felt as if it was crying just as her eyes were. She had been mentally calling out to her sistersâŠhoping and praying that they were somewhere in that rubble.
âNothing yet?â Kurt quietly asked as he sat down beside the shadow manipulator. She slowly opened her eyes looking to the small memorial already being set up.
âNothingâŠâ Diana somberly repeated as she clutched her hands in her lap. She should be used to this. Why did this have to hurt so much worse than anything else?
âYou need to eat, Diana,â the Nightcrawler gently said as he placed a three fingered hand over her clenched hands.
The goth shook her head. She cast a glance at two of the bodies under white sheets. Her heart shattered a bit more. Kurt, noticing where she was looking, moved his hand to gently pry hers apart and take one of them into his grasp.
 âYou did everything you couldâŠâ
âI didnât do anything! Henry took my opposing power before I could stop himâŠbefore I or Rogue could stop himâŠâ
Kurt sighed quietly before letting go of her hand moving to wrap his arm around her shoulders. Diana leaned against him despite knowing she should not.
He seemed ok with though as his hand rubbed up and down her arm. Kurt just wanted to comfort her in any way he could.
Diana did not know where either of her sisters wereâŠor if they were alive. She just found out who Henry wasâŠand did not even get to have a decent conversation with him. The goth felt more broken than ever.
âThis is a nightmareâŠâ she whispered as a few new tears fell from her eyes.
âI knowâŠI know, liebling,â Kurt replied tightening his hold on her.
A radio played quietly in the background. The room was eerily silent other than the news that played on that old fashioned radio. This room, part of a large estate on a large piece of land in England, was the perfect place for a rather sinister scientist.
For years, Mister Sinister had been working tirelessly on cultivating the perfect heart to replace the still one of his deceased wifeâŠhis beloved Eve. No one knew of this project how much time he spent in his private lab working to perfect the ten clones he had created of her. Everything he was doingâŠhe was doing for herâŠ
The clone that he had cultivated to be the donor for this heart had escaped though. It had put a set back in his plans. Sinister was stubborn though. He was so close. He could not stop just because his daughter and the clone of Jean Grey had assisted Seven in escaping her gruesome fate.
With the escape of the clone that had the right heartâŠSinister had to become true to his name. He had to kill an innocent mutant stealing their still beating heart to bring his beloved back from her early grave. The surgery had been risky knowing that if anything went wrong that he risked losing her forever.
For twenty three years, Eve Essex had been frozen in stasis. She almost looked just as she had the day that she had diedâŠthat fateful dayâŠ. Sinister remembered it well. It should have been joyous with the birth of his firstborn. Those joyous moments had been cut short though when complications had happened.
Nathaniel blamed himself for Eveâs death. He always felt as if he should have done more research into what would happen if his human wife would birth a mutant child especially with his tampered genetics. These twenty three years had weighed heavily on him due to that factâŠamong other things.
His daughter, DianaâŠthe little girl that Eve had given him, had been stolen right from under his nose somehow. Someone had taken Diana from Sinisterâs lab a few months after her birth.
He felt like a failureâŠfailing to keep his wife and child safeâŠ
When Nathaniel had learned that Charles Xavier had taken in a mutant infant, he knewâŠthat was his daughter that that spineless man had adopted. Sinister had tried during the early years of Dianaâs life to get her back, but Xavier had her too well hidden.
This would fix everything thoughâŠbringing Eve backâŠmaking her strongerâŠfixing her flawsâŠ
Sinister had replaced several of Eveâs organs throughout the years slowly making her the perfect human. Aside from her pure genetics, Eve soon would have the perfect body (aside from a few scars from the transplants). Nathaniel was proud of his work, but he hoped it actually would work.
 It had toâŠ
He had speculated for years that the heart of a mutant with instantaneous healing powers could resurrect someone from an early grave. Sinister usually was not one to pray, but he was praying to every entity he could think of as he replaced Eveâs heart.
This had to workâŠit had toâŠ
 He needed herâŠ
The procedure went smoothly with no problems or interruptions. Now all Sinister had to do was be patient and see if his work and research had paid off.
Eve lay in bed with her hands neatly folded on her stomach. She merely looked to be sleeping despite the lack of breathing. Nathaniel sat quietly in an armchair a short distance away in the corner of the bedroom. His eyes were locked on Eveâs still, cold form as she lay there motionless.
The waiting felt like an eternity. Sinister sat and just watched his wifeâs still form. After that eternity, a gasp resonated in the room like a sudden rush of wind had flooded into oneâs chest. Eve gasped loudly her body quivering as her eyes snapped open. Nathaniel was at her side in an instant reaching out with steadying hands.
âEveâŠâ he had whispered emotionally as he watched her adjust to her surroundings and the fact that she was breathing again.
Her gaze snapped to look at him as her eyes adjusted. She stared at him with wide eyes as she breathed shakily. Eveâs hands shook violently but stilled when Nathaniel took them in his.
âMy dearest EveâŠâ he whispered taking both of her hands in one of his lifting his now free hand to gently caress her head.
Eve relaxed at his touch her shaking dying down slightly. Her voice was hoarse as she spoke to him, âNathanielâŠâ
Sinister chuckled quietly at her quiet utterance of his real name. He leaned down and placed a gentle kiss to her forehead.
âIâm here,â he quietly answered before looking her directly in her eyes, âYouâre hereâŠâ
Eve was silent for a moment as she took in his words. Her eyes widened as she quickly muttered, âThe babyâŠâ
Sinister shushed her feeling his heart wrench at the mention of Diana. He sighed quietly as he gently answered, âSheâs okâŠâ
It was not a lieâŠshe was okâŠjust not with himâŠ
âSheâŠ?â Eve asked her voice gaining some strength.
âYesâŠsheâŠyou had a little girlâŠâ he replied realizing that Eve had not even been able to see their child.
âA girlâŠâ she repeated sighing quietly, âCan I see her?â
Eve seemed to be unaware that she had died tooâŠ
Sinister sighed and gently caressed Eveâs head again as he tried to figure out an easy way to inform his wife that she had been dead for twenty three years. Ultimately, he answered, âLaterâŠfor nowâŠI just want to have you to myselfâŠâ
She stared at him for a moment before swallowing thickly and whispering, âShe didnât make itâŠâ
Nathaniel felt sympathy shoot through him hearing Eve mutter that. He didnât often feel more caring emotions, but right now he had to as Eve readjusted to being alive again. With a quiet sigh, Sinister answered, âShe made itâŠDiana made itâŠâ
Eve sighed quietly obviously relieved to hear that her child hadnât perished, âIs she not healthy? Is that why you wonât let me see her?â
âNo. Thatâs notââ Nathaniel started sounding aggravated. He took a deep, steadying breath before continuing, âSheâs not hereâŠâ
Her brow furrowed hearing that. Eve tried to sit up but hissed when she felt the shooting pain in her chest. Sinister immediately panicked when she attempted to sit up placing his hands gently on his shoulders, âDonâtâŠyouâll hurt yourselfâŠâ
Eve lifted a shaky hand and looked down at her chest as best as she could. What she saw horrified herâŠa long stitch that disappeared under the collar of her nightgown was present. Her breathing quickened as she began to panic.
Sinister shushed her reaching out and gently gripping her jaw making her look at him, âYouâŠhave beenâŠgoneâŠfor awhileâŠâ
She stared at him opening her mouth to try and ask what he meant, but her words caught in her throat. Nathaniel sighed quietly as he watched her.
âEveâŠmy loveâŠyouâveâŠâ he stalled for a moment before bluntly stating, âYouâve been dead for twenty three yearsâŠâ
Her body stiffened. She stared at him with wide eyes.
âWhatâŠ?â she whispered. Nathaniel looked away for a moment before looking back to her, âYou died not long after Diana was bornâŠIâm still not sure what happenedâŠ. IâŠI fixed you though. Youâre stronger nowâŠâ
Eve swallowed thickly as she processed what he said. She looked away staring up at the ceiling. Her free hand shakily touched the stitching on her chest.
âYou replaced my heartâŠâ Eve murmured. Nathaniel smiled weakly at her, âVery goodâŠâ
âWhat about DianaâŠ?â she asked determined to get an honest answer.
âSheâŠâ he sighed, âShe was stolenâŠâ
Eve sighed quietly and closed her eyes lifting her hand and gently placing it over her eyes.
 âEverything fall apart?â Eve inquired.
âNoâŠI didnât let my grief destroy what you helped me build,â Sinister replied reaching out to gently pull her hand away from her eyes. She looked to him and sighed, âIs she pretty?â
Nathaniel smiled softly at her, âSheâs perfect.â
âIfâŠshe was takenâŠdoes she even know sheâs our child?â
âMost likely notâŠCharles Xavier took her inâŠhas made her one of his X-Men.â
Eve sighed and looked to him with a furrowed brow. She wanted to be angry. Something inside her told her that Nathaniel had done everything in his power to get her back.
âDo youâŠdo you have any pictures of her?â Eve quietly asked her brow relaxing. Sinister hummed smiling softly at Eve before nodding and standing leaving the room. He returned a few moments later with a large album in hand.
âIâve followed her life with the X-Men,â he mused as he set the album aside to help Eve sit up carefully leaning back against some pillows, âLet me show youâŠâ
Alison stood in front of the small memorial that had been set up. She looked so cold and angryâŠlike her heart had been ripped from her chest and pummeled with a baseball bat. In a sense, it had been.
Her eyes were trained on the head of the statue of Magneto. Anger coursed through her veins, but she knew she had to channel it in other ways. If this had been ten years ago, she could have called every source in the criminal underworld that she knew. NowâŠshe could not do that. Alison had an image to uphold now.
Sure she had read the will of Xavier. How Diana was to take over the X-Men in Erikâs absence. ThisâŠthis called for a stronger hand though. The Ink Demonâs iron grip of vengeanceâŠ
The sudden sound of a plane overhead pulled her from her thoughts. She looked to the sky seeing the Blackbird landing just on the edge of the temporary encampment.
Slowly, Alison moved over to it. Her expression remained cold and angry as the doors opened. Soft footsteps could be heard behind her. Diana was approaching as well.
Standing before them was the familiar face of one Henry McCoy. Diana immediately moved to Beast hugging the man who hugged her back.
âYouâre alright,â Hank murmured sounding utterly relieved. She nodded before releasing him from the hug. The expression on her face told Beast though that something had happenedâŠsomething horrible.
âHankâŠâ Diana whispered trying not to break down into a mess of sobs again. Nightcrawler approached feeling his heart ache seeing the goth in such a state.
Alison sighed heavily before gently reaching out pushing Diana behind her. The Ink Demon faced Beast. Her expression did not seem to set him at unease though. Seeing that encouraged Alison to speak, âThree of our own are deadâŠâ
Hankâs expression turned somber, âI feared that that had happenedâŠ. WhoâŠ?â
âGambitâŠRebelâŠMagnetoâŠâ Alison choked out before quietly clearing her throat not wanting to break.
âOh noâŠâ Beast murmured becoming rather emotional. He gathered himself though looking to Diana then back to Alison, âWhat of Rogue? And Rayna?â
âTheyâreâŠaliveâŠ. Do not be surprised if you start hearing about burning buildings that fall down with a little help thoughâŠâ the Ink Demon somberly said as she hung her head, âThose two remind me so much of myself at their ageâŠâ
Hank carefully reached one of his large hands out settling it on Alisonâs shoulder. The tension present there seemed to relax if only slightly for a moment. He knew he had to ask though, âThe bodiesâŠ?â
âOver thereâŠErik thoughâŠâ Alison whispered before turning her body away and gritting her teeth.
Beast took a step back knowing the Ink Demon obviously needed space. She was headstrong and independent having lived too long in a position where such visible emotions would be seen as weakness.
âWe shall take the remaining bodies back to the mainlandâŠyou may go ahead and board the Blackbird if you wish to leaveâŠâ Hank gently said before moving away from the trio.
The destruction of the island tore at Beastâs heart. This was supposed to become a thriving mutant community. Yet nowâŠnow it was a devastated wasteland of death and destruction. Whoever had done thisâŠwas either searching for war or was trying to find a way to destroy mutantkind once and for all.

Authorâs Notes: Gambit my belovedđ„° Iâm not sure with how I wrote this cause it doesnât match the song entirelyâŠso I did my best and made it kind of like an underlying thoughtâš
â ïžWarnings: n/a unless you donât like fireworks
Everything gets fuzzy when you come around
âYou want me toâŠwhat?â
âI need you to help me get some fireworks!â
Rayna Vur stared incredulously at the excited Jubilation Lee who was attempting to persuade the older girl to take her to get fireworks. The Firebird was not entirely sure what in the world this pyrotechnic teen wanted with them and was not getting the answers she wanted.
âSo if I help you get these fireworksâŠâ Rayna muttered pinching the bridge of her nose, âWhat do I get?â
âYou realize Iâm doing this cause you and Gambit need to get your act together, right?â Jubilee sassed smirking at the pink haired woman. Rayna glared at the teen crossing her arms. It was not common knowledge that the Firebird and Gambit were already a thing. Everyone just thought that they still were notâŠthat they just sat around and flirted. Ok that is not entirely false, they did do that a lot.
âSoâŠwaitâŠare you trying to get me and Gambit together?â the older girl asked trying to get Jubilee to tell Rayna her whole plan. The teen merely hummed, âI just need you to take me to get fireworks! Thatâs it!â
Raynaâs eyes narrowed causing Jubilee to huff, âOh come on, Ray-Ray! Itâll be fun and helpful! You want Gambit to ask you out right? I donât think you want to be locked in a closet with him~!â
The Firebird sighed quietly and lifted a hand pinching the bridge of her nose.
âJubesâŠyou realize you canât force stuff like this, yeah?â
âAbsolutely! It doesnât hurt to nudge it along though! Plus! You and our resident charmer definitely have chemistry!â
Rayna snorted and placed her hand that had been pinching her nose over her eyes. Jubilee had no clue what was going on behind closed doors.
âWhat?!â
âIâm just thinking about how this absolutely will not work.â
âOh have some hope, grumpus!â
Jubilee quickly reached out and gripped Rayna by the arm dragging her from the mansion.
The girls had gone to a firework surplus store. The Firebird definitely felt uneasy surrounded by all the flammable things. Jubileeâs incessant yapping did not help Raynaâs nerves at all.
âDo you even know what youâre looking for?â the pink haired woman asked the teen who merely smirked at Rayna. The Firebird huffed and looked around the store surveying the area.
Her breath hitched though upon recognizing someone at the end of the aisle. Rayna squared her jaw keeping her eyes on the man before whispering to Jubilee, âHurry up.â
âWhy?â Jubilee asked looking at Rayna curiously. Rayna hushed the teen, âThat man down thereâŠyou donât want to make eye contactâŠunderstand? Iâll lure him away.â
Rayna was already was walking toward the man though. She did not look at him as she walked past him. The manâs brown eyes followed her inconspicuously as Rayna walked past him.
The Firebird left the store with the man right on her heels. Jubilee not liking this immediately contacted the rest of the X-Men. Gambit had been the first one to answer. He sounded worried. Under any other circumstances, Jubilee would have found it cute; but right now was not the time for that sadly.
Outside was a different story. Rayna and the mystery man were having a hushed conversation at the side of the building. They were closeâŠway closer than two strangers ever would have been. She knew himâŠ
Gambit and Rogue arrived at the scene ready to offer up backup. When the Cajunâs eyes landed on his girl talking with some strange man, the jealousy flared dangerously in his chest.
âGet Jubilee,â he calmly told Rogue who merely nodded slightly as she moved to enter the store and gather the teen. The Cajun had not realized how Rogueâs face had paled upon seeing the young man who was talking with Rayna.
Gambit rolled his shoulders getting a card ready in between his fingers as he approached the pair. The man immediately noticed Gambit coming closer. He whispered something to Rayna before rushing off.
Remy huffed not getting a chance to beat on the guy. Heâd take getting to check on the Firebird though.
âCherâŠyou ok?â Gambit whispered as he reached a hand out and gently grabbed Raynaâs arm. Her lime eyes had followed the manâs figure when he had walked away. She looked at Remy though and asked, âJubes good?â
Remy chuckled quietlyâŠleave it to Rayna to ask about the kid first. He noticed the glaze over her eyes thoughâŠlike she was fighting tearsâŠ
âOui, sheâs fine. You thoughâŠyou sure youâre good, cher?â
âIâm fine, sharkie! Quit worryinâ!â
Gambit huffed quietly before begrudgingly agreeing. His grip on her arm tightened as he began to drag her to the front of the store.
Rogue and Jubilee were already by Raynaâs car talking quietly. The teen had placed several sacks in the back of the car and looked to Rayna expectantly.
âWho was tall, dark, and handsome?â she sassed giving the Firebird a look. Rayna rolled her eyes and quipped, âNone of any of your businesses! Now get in the car. Weâre going home.â
Gambitâs brow furrowed hearing Raynaâs harsh tone. She almost seemedâŠspooked. He would have asked but right now was not the time. Worry settled in his chest though knowing something was wrongâŠ
Upon returning to the X-Mansion, Rayna had immediately disappeared to her room upstairs. It wasnât unusual for her to want to be alone, but this was different. She was literally locking everyone out of what that man and her had talked aboutâŠ
Finally, Gambit banged on her door impatiently wanting answers. Rayna shouted back in response to his knocking, âLEAVE ME ALONE!â
The Cajun huffed and beat on the door harder. It flew open revealing a very upset looking Firebird. She relaxed slightly upon seeing Gambit.
âWhat?â Rayna snapped causing Gambit to scowl.
âDonât be like dat. Gambit wanna know who dat mystery man was,â he sneered in return. Her eyes narrowed at him before suddenly reaching out and grabbing his jacket pulling him into her room.
She let go of his jacket slamming the door and turning to glare at him, âSomethingâs come upâŠmy demons are haunting meâŠhappy now?â
Remy seemed to soften at her words. He stood still for a moment and stared at her.
âIs there anything that I can do to help?â Gambit finally asked after several long moments of silence. Rayna seemed to calm down hearing his heartfelt statement.
âNoâŠâ she sighed running her hands through her hair. Rayna brushed past him over to her window looking out onto the yard.
Gambitâs eyes followed her form as she moved to the window. He felt his heart sink hearing the inflection in her voice. Slowly, Remy came up behind her placing a hand on her shoulder.
âRaynaâŠâ he whispered making her crumble. She huffed and placed her hands over her face, âMy uncleâs deadâŠâ
Gambit stalled for a moment. Sheâd never told him about her family. Her uncle being deadâŠthat seemed like something that had hit her hard.
ââM sorry,â Remy whispered wrapping his arm around her shoulders. Rayna chuckled darkly and muttered, âDonât be sorryâŠI hated the manâŠI just donât like what myâŠcousin told meâŠâ
âWhat?â Gambit gently prodded trying to get her to open up.
Rayna let her hands fall to her sides as she looked out the window, âMy sister killed himâŠâ
Gambit froze hearing that. Her sister?!
âMy familyâs complicatedâŠI know you want to askâŠbut donât right nowâŠfor both our mentalities,â Rayna spoke up noticing how he froze up. She turned her head to look at him.
âIâŠâ he tried to speak but ultimately muttered, âFineâŠâ
Rayna offered him a soft smile and replied, âThanks, Remy.â
He smiled softly hearing those words come from her mouth. Gambit hummed and leaned down planting a gentle kiss on her lips trying to comfort her.
âWHAT THE ACTUALâ" a voice suddenly shrieked causing the duo to jump away from each other. They turned to see Jubilee standing in the doorway with wide eyes and bubblegum popped over her mouth.
âYOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME! YOU TWO AREâŠâ she shrieked perplexed by the situation. The teen huffed and crossed her arms over her chest sneering, âFine. Iâm keeping these fireworks for myself.â
Rayna suddenly began to laugh at the situation. Gambit looked to the Firebird as if telling her to be quiet. She shrugged though and muttered between her laughs, âCatâs outta the bag!â
Remy rolled his eyes before moving to leave Raynaâs room brushing by Jubilee who immediately grabbed his arm, âOh youâre not getting out of this. Come on.â
His gaze snapped to the teen as she suddenly dragged him from Raynaâs room. By that time, the Firebird had stopped cackling and quickly exclaimed, âHey! Where are you taking my beau!â
Jubilee merely turned her head and stuck her tongue out at the older girl. Rayna huffed and quickly tried to follow. She stopped though hearing something at her window. The Firebird looked to see a familiar figure at her window. She sighed and turned her attention to them leaving Jubilee to be a pestâŠfor now.
After having a short conversation with the person who appeared at her window, Rayna moved to leave her room. Upon reaching the den, the pink haired woman saw Gambit sitting on one of the couches looking absolutely perplexed while fidgeting with a deck of cards. Rayna chuckled seeing his face and stood in front of him.
âWhatâs wrong with you?â she sassed smirking at him. His eyes snapped open to look at hers. He smirked back albeit uncomfortably, âLots, birdieâŠtrust olâ GambitâŠthat Jubilee is more a firecracker den you.â
âDebatableâŠbut humor meâŠwhatâd she do?â
Tucking his cards away in his jacket, Gambit stood and grabbed Raynaâs hand pulling her to the door. He led her outside and stopped on the bottom step.
Raynaâs brow furrowed until she saw the vivid colors and heard the familiar boom of fireworks. She laughed quietly and looked to the sky.
âShe made me helpâŠand told me to do this,â he murmured before quickly wrapping his arms around Raynaâs waist leaning down and planting a firm kiss against her lips. The Firebird squeaked before kissing him back wrapping her arms around his neck.
High pitched squealing could be heard from a distance away causing the couple to break apart and look to see Jubilee jumping up and down.
âDat kidâŠâ Gambit mumbled.
âHey. Give her the benefit of the doubt. She thought she was going to get us together despite yaâknowâŠus already being together,â Rayna answered causing Gambit to grumble and silence her with another kiss as the fireworks continued above them.

Streets bustled with many colorful individuals as a familiar woman in black strolled with a red head on her right and a blonde on her left. Diana Essex and Madelyne Pryor had found their way to the mutant island of Genosha. During their escapades here, they had been able to find and rescue Seven who had began to go by âSevâ from Sinister. That was a story for another time though.
The three women had grown close over the past few months. They were like three peas in a pod. Diana had helped guide both clones to understand themselves and become their own individuals to be more than what Sinister had designed them to be.
Alongside helping her new sisters, Diana had been placed on the Genoshan High Council as the Head of Mutant Science and Research. With this promotion, the goth had been able to reconnect with an old friend who she had been wanting to see for the past year.
âMeine Damen!â that friend called out causing the trio to stop. Diana turned first smiling softly when she saw the familiar figure of a fuzzy blue teleporter approach them.
âHello, Kurt,â she politely greeted which was repeated by both Seven and Madelyne. The clones looked at each other before turning to Diana with slight smirks on their faces.
âWeâre going to go ahead and go home, Di,â Seven gently said smiling at her sister who nodded at the blonde before looking to the red head. They walked away leaving Diana and Kurt alone.
Kurt offered Diana an arm which she took smiling shyly. She knew he was only being a gentleman, but a part of her could not help but wish they could have something more than friendship. Diana respected Kurtâs boundaries though. He was a monk now a priest. She knew she could not get in the way of that. The understanding they shared though was beyond what either of them could understand. Two orphans shunned for how they lookedâŠwho better to understand the other? Diana knew she would always end up caring for Kurt from a distance though.
âGenosha is only continuing to grow, donât you think, FrĂ€ulein Xavier?â Kurt asked as the pair walked through the streets of Genosha.
âIt is,â she agreed looking around trying to keep from staring at the elf. Diana smiled softly though as she looked at him, âNo need to be so formalâŠand you know I donât go by Xavier anymore.â
âAh! Forgive me. I forget,â he chuckled looking to her with those big yellow eyes. Diana looked away from him not wanting to stare.
âItâs alrightâŠIâm still getting used to it too,â the goth replied causing the elf to chuckle quietly.
Kurt stopped when they approached one of the vendors specifically an ice cream vendor. Dianaâs eyes immediately snapped to look at the vendor before looking back at the blue man beside her. She lifted a finger pointing at him, âDonâtâŠâ
He merely grinned at her flashing his fangs as he pulled his arm from her arm and approached the seller. Diana rolled her eyes despite the warmth that was crawling up her neck to her ears.
When Kurt returned holding out a chocolate ice cream cone to her, Diana gave him a scolding look but took the sweet treat all the same. She looked shyly for a moment before quietly clearing her throat, âThanksâŠâ
âOf course, leibchen,â the Nightcrawler answered as he gently grabbed her arm and leading her down the street once again, âCome on. Let me take you home before Magneto arrives.â
Small things like this did nothing but make Dianaâs feelings for the monk grow. Heâs too sweet for his own goodâŠ
The Nightcrawler walked with the goth through the streets of Genosha. Many mutants greeted them with wide smiles and pleasant attitudes. As they arrived at Dianaâs apartment building though, Kurt stopped just outside the building turning to smile at Diana, âI must take my leave now, frĂ€ulein. Thank you for letting me walk you home.â
Diana opened her mouth to reply, but the elf gently grabbed her hand and kissed the back of it causing her to clam up. She offered him a shy smile before he teleported away. That shy smile remained on her face as she returned to her apartment where Sev and Madelyne were waiting. Both clones noticed the gothâs smile and looked to each other with their own large knowing grins.
âHe walked you home, didnât he?â Madelyne mused as she watched Diana bustle past them to her room. Seven cackled watching the gothâs embarrassed expression.
âYou two should change. Magneto and the Ink Demon will be here soon,â the ravenette murmured as she opened the door to her room before moving to her closet. Seven and Madelyne followed her giggling as they saw how frazzled the shadow manipulator was.
âWhat did he say to you?â Sev asked as she moved to sit on the edge of Dianaâs bed. Madelyne leaned in the doorway crossing her arms as she smirked at her gothic sister.
Diana absentmindedly rummaged through her closet trying not to listen to the teasing of her meddling sisters. They knew how to push her buttons though. That happened when living with meddling clones for the past four months.
âOh hushââ the goth grumbled as she pulled out a pair of slacks, âGo change!â
Both women snickered and lifted their hands in surrender as they left Dianaâs room. Once the door closed, the goth sighed before laying back on her bed clutching her pants to her chest trying to keep her beating heart from bursting out of her chest. She shook her head and sat back up before standing and changing from her skirt to her pants. Looking to the clock on her wall, Diana gasped quietly before quickly rushing from her room dragging her sisters with her. If they were not careful, they might be late to greet Genoshaâs guests.
A sense of belonging was going worldwide today with the admittance of Genosha into the UN. The citizens of the soon to be mutant nation eagerly awaited the arrival of Magneto who had come on the invitation of the UN for a gala.
Magneto never went anywhere without his right hand though. Alison Chios sat in the co-pilotâs seat of the Blackbird. With them, Henry Chios and Rayna Vur had come as well. Rogue sat quietly behind Henryâs seat as did Gambit sit quietly behind the Firebird. Despite having come with his birdie, Remy had never felt more distant from Rayna. She seemed to be talking more with Henry and Rogue than with Magneto and the Ink Demon. Gambit wanted her to stay with the X-Men, but she seemed to want to go a very different path just as Rebel and Rogue did.
He sighed heavily as he fidgeted with a deck of cards. Looking to the pilots, Remy grumped, âDis is takinâ foreverâŠâ
Rayna cast an unhappy glance at the Cajun who merely stared blankly back at her. Magneto did not even look back as he calmly replied obviously not liking the younger manâs attitude, âGambit, please remember that should the new Blackbird suffer a malfunction, you are the only soul on board for whom gravity would most certainly be an issue.â
âMAGS!â Rayna snapped not appreciating his comment. The Master of Magnetism kept his eyes forward not even acknowledging the pyrotechnic. Alison sighed aggravated before snapping as well, âAll of you! QUIET!â
Magneto immediately shut his mouth not wanting to face his wifeâs unhappiness. He knew better than to be defiant against her in this kind of situation. A sentiment well known by the Firebird too. Gambit, however, did not know how to keep his mouth shut nor did he know that the Ink Demon was not someone to go against.
âWhy? Cause yâall hate me?â the Cajun said staring defiantly at the back of Alisonâs head. Rayna made a choking noise hearing his attitude. Her eyes were glued to the back of the Ink Demonâs head as the womanâs horns returned to her head.
Alison whirled around in her seat staring angrily at Gambit who stilled in his seat seeing her expression. She calmly but authoritatively spoke, âYou were only allowed to come with us because Rayna asked if you could come. If she didnât care about you so much, I would have tossed you out of this plane a long time ago.â
âAliâŠâ Henry murmured trying to get his aunt to calm down. When her eyes turned to him though, he shut his mouth and looked away knowing now was not the time to try and keep her calm.
The Ink Demon turned her seat back around and stared out the front glass of the Blackbird as the plane went eerily silent. For the next few minutes, everyone sat in silence not daring to poke Alisonâs patience anymore than it had been.
âWell would ya look at thatâŠâ Rogue said speaking up for the first time in the last probably thirty minutes. The group looked out the front glass of the jet feeling their eyes widen at the sight before them.
Genosha was now a spectacle. It looked more inhabited than it had in the past five years. Rayna, Gambit, Henry, and Rogue stood from their seats moving to stand behind Erik and Alison.
âThey been busy doinâ a bit of renovatinâ since Gambitâs last visit,â the Cajun commented as he sneakily grabbed at Raynaâs hand which he held tightly in his own. The Firebird cast Remy a glance before looking back out the window.
Once the Blackbird had been landed, the group of X-Men made their way down the gangplank. They were met with several familiar faces. Rayna immediately brightened when she saw a familiar head of black hair.
âDi?!â the Firebird exclaimed before quickly rushing toward the goth who smiled upon seeing her friend. They met in a tight embrace that was filled with happy giggles and greetings.
âRayna, my friend! It is so good to see you!â Diana said as she pulled away from Raynaâs tight hold.
âWhat about us?â Rogue asked causing the goth to laugh quietly as she moved to hug Rogue and Gambit as well. Henry hung back watching the scene before him with an almost somber expression.
âGo say hello,â Alison gently whispered before moving forward to stand beside Erik. Henry watched his aunt walk away before sighing quietly and moving to stand beside Rogue who looked to him smiling brightly. Seeing her smile eased him slightly before he greeted the shadow manipulator, âHello, Diana.â
He extended a gloved hand to the goth who merely smiled at him as she respectfully took it shaking it, âHello yourself, Henry.â
âYou couldnât wait for me, could you?â another voice said causing the group to look over behind Diana who was smiling knowingly. Rogue and Firebird immediately gasped and moved to greet the red head who was smirking at them.
âWell, would you look at you, girl!â Rogue commented as she hugged the clone who hugged back. When the pair separated, Rayna immediately swooped in. It had been made apparent that the Firebird liked this version of Jean better than the real Jean, âLots of smiles at the mansion when we heard Madelyne Pryor scored a top spot amongst Genoshaâs inner circle!â
âThe Interim Council wanted an X-Man,â Madelyne commented as she pushed away from Raynaâs hug, âLuckily, you guys could spare a Jean.â
Gambit had approached at this point and could not help but be coy as he spoke up, âHush, madame. Two always better den one, and far better den three or more. Most times.â
Rayna rolled her eyes and elbowed him in the stomach causing the Cajun to huff out a breath as he threw the Firebird a playful glare which she returned with her own. Now thatâs betterâŠ
âYou werenât the only X-Man to join the Council, sister,â Diana commented as she approached the situation. Her eyes looking over caused the two X-Men to look in the direction the goth was. Their eyes widened seeing the blonde woman who had been in the mansion during the Goblin Queen incident.
âSev. Come here,â Diana gently called to the blonde who quietly and cautiously approached them. Sev reached out taking Dianaâs extended hand, âThis is Sev Essex, my sister.â
Gambit ever the charmer reached out taking Sevâs free hand lifting it to his lips greeting her, âBonjour, mademoiselle.â
Sev stood still with wide eyes for a moment before looking to Diana who was trying her hardest not to laugh at the cloneâs reaction. The blonde returned her confused glance to Gambit as she quietly greeted him, âHelloâŠâ
Before Remy could speak to the woman anymore though, Magneto pushed into the situation with Alison in tow both reaching out to shake hands with the three sisters, âForgive Gambitâs passive adolescence. He insisted on coming after Rayna agreed to join Alison and I at the gala. I confess, the Master of Magnetism was surprised to receive an invite bearing the United Nationsâ seal.â
âYeah, I hear itâs called âthe future,ââ Val Cooper commented from where she stood having been observing the reunions with a rather distasteful glance. Her next words were all business as she spoke, âMagneto, the Interim Council would love a word with you before tonightâs gala. Privately if possible.â
âWhatever you have to say to me, you can say to Alison as well. She will accompany me,â Erik responded leaving no room for argument as he stared coolly at the human who merely glared at the Ink Demon who watched Dr. Cooper expectantly.
âFine,â she huffed before turning and beginning to walk away. She stopped though and looked to Magneto and Alison though.
âWellâŠwhat about us?â Rayna quickly asked a sentiment that Rogue agreed with, âHey yeah! What the heck are we supposed to be doinâ while all yâall go have your big talks?â
Diana hummed as she commented, âGo sightseeing of course!â
A loud popping noise caught the X-Menâs attention more importantly Rogueâs attention. Kurt Wagner appeared moving toward Rogue quickly through the air. The elf latched ahold of her greeting her in German.
As Nightcrawler greeted the newcomers, Madelyne moved behind Diana whispering, âYouâre drooling.â
Diana squeaked as she swatted at the red head who cackled and walked away. The goth shyly returned her eyes to the German as he talked animatedly to the X-Men. She made a quiet noise in frustration before huffing out a breath as she straightened her shirt. Sev chuckled quietly before moving to follow after Madelyne wanting to leave the ravenette in her personal torment, spending time with Kurt. Rayna looked in Dianaâs direction when she heard the squeak come from her gothic friend. She chuckled quietly seeing the way that Diana was staring at the elven monk. Subtly, the Firebird elbowed Remy getting his attention. When he saw the look on Dianaâs face, he snickered. That was an expression he had not seen on the little gothâs face before.
âKurt joined the Council not long before Madelyne and I did,â Diana said as she calmly approached the group who looked to her inquisitively. Before any of them could open their mouths though, Kurt teleported them from the landing platform down to the stairway. Diana sighed quietly before quickly following after them.
âThank you for bringing me with you, Kurt,â she gently teased. Kurt whirled slightly from where he sat looking horrified, âForgive me, Diana! I-I got too excited.â
His rushed apology made Dianaâs expression soften significantly. Rayna and Rogue smirked at each other seeing how gentle the gothâs expression was. She did not look at anyone else like that.
âOh hush. Iâm not upset with you,â Diana mused as she moved through the four X-Men to ruffle the Nightcrawlerâs hair. His blush went unseen by her, but the others namely Rogue saw the look on her adoptive brotherâs face. She hummed knowingly. Even the monk was not entirely immune to the sweet girlâs charmâŠeven less so than the othersâŠ
Kurt looked back to the city of Genosha as he tried to get his heart beat back under control. He spread his arms apart as he spoke, âSuch things to see! So many wonders in this city.â
âLong as he left those faithful killer monks of his back at the monastery,â Gambit commented causing Kurt to look to the Cajun lifting a finger of his three fingered hand, âAh, a scimitar tongue, Gambit, you remain as always. We have much to discuss since our gothic adventure amid the Alps. Come!â
The Nightcrawler held his hands out offering them and his arms to the group surrounding him. The others were careful to place their hands on his arms leaving his hands to be grabbed by Rogue and Diana. In a puff of purple smoke, the group disappeared from the landing bay reappearing in a bustling street.
There was a welcome feeling as instead of being attacked for appearing so suddenly they were merely looked at with welcoming smiles and chuckles. Several young mutants ran through the streets laughing as they played. One of them who they recognized as the Morlock, Leech, stopped when he saw them. He waved at them causing Henry, Rogue, and even Rayna to wave back. The boy seemed to want to approach them, but one of his friends pulled him away.
âWoahâŠâ Henry suddenly murmured seeing howâŠmutant this place was. It felt soâŠwelcoming.
âItâs just like he said,â Rayna whispered as she too looked around. Gambitâs eyes snapped to look suspiciously at the Firebird, âWho? The Professor?â
As if noticing her blunder, the Firebird cleared her throat quietly before answering, âUh⊠yeahâŠcourseâŠâ
Rogue sensing the tension between the couple spoke up, âHe did always used to say weâd have a place all our own one day.â
âMore than a place, Rogue,â Diana said as she strolled around behind them greeting a few people with a small smile. Kurt appeared by her crouching on a barrel, âA home.â
Gambit still did not seem satisfied. When he saw the prices on some of the produce, he could not help but comment, âDaddyâs charginâ pretty high rentâŠâ
âBirthing a nation overnight is not without its share of stumbles,â Nightcrawler replied as he teleported over to the vendor who Remy had been eyeing. Rogue rolled her eyes and approached the vendor holding out some money Henry had handed her. The mutant took it with a soft smile. Her voice oozed with sarcasm as the southern belle commented, âIgnore him. Fly canât help but ruin honey.â
Gambit huffed and crossed his arms as he looked around spotting the large statues of Professor X and Magneto, âOr maybe Gambitâs willinâ to ask questions no one else will. Like, why is Magneto suddenly mutant MVP?â
Ignoring the manâs grumbling, Henry quickly reached out taking Rogueâs hand in his right hand and Raynaâs in his left dragging them towards a street performance. Gambit watched with a sour expression as he watched Rayna talk quietly with Henry and Rogue who were standing a little too close. Something was wrong, and Rayna still had not told him what was up with her and Henry Chios. On top of the fact that Magneto seemed overly protective of the Firebird, an observation that Gambit was not been keen on. He had his suspicions, but he would not push. Seeing her begin to dance with Henry though, made a jealousy that was akin to Raynaâs flames begin to flicker in the Cajunâs chest.
âFor a man named Gambit, your poker face is very poor,â Nightcrawler mused as he leaned against the taller man. Remy quickly (but gently) grabbed Kurt by his face pulling him away holding him down slightly, âHey, mind your beeswax, furball! Didnât go ringing for no priest!â
âYou need one though,â Diana teased as she moved to stand on Gambitâs other side. The Cajun looked to her as he let Kurt go, âDonât need no gothic bookworm neither!â
Diana rolled her eyes as she moved behind Gambit as Nightcrawler teleported to lean against Remyâs other side now. The elven priest commented as he looked at the Cajun, âIt does not take a priest nor a âgothic bookwormâ to see that the Firebirdâs heart burns for you.â
âI donât think datâs the burn she be lookinâ for,â Gambit somberly replied as he watched Rayna with Rebel and Rogue. Henryâs hands were too close for Gambitâs comfort as he watched them dance. The pink haired woman noticed Gambitâs gaze smirking and waving at him before looking back at Henry as he leaned forward and said something to her. Her gaze returned to Rebel almost begrudgingly though something that Kurt and Diana seemed to take note of.
âDo you remember what I told you, Gambit? To give her some space but not too much?â Diana asked as she looked to the mutant man in question who was just staring at the Firebird with a look of such infatuation it was almost sad.
Kurt however found it comical as he laughed and patted Gambit on the shoulder, âYou Americans! So theatrical! Life is violins und close-ups. I blame soap operas. Just marry the girl and be done.â
âScoundrels like me, we donât get no white picket reward. We too busy for love. Too busy sinninââŠâ Gambit huffed as he brushed both of them off of him taking a step forward. Diana could hear the pain in the Cajunâs voice. It only made her heart ache.
âThere is no love without sinâŠfor love is best measured in what we forgive,â Nightcrawler mused as he smirked almost darkly at Remy who looked back at him before looking back to Rayna who was trying to get away from Henry and Rogue who had started to dance along with the street performance leaving Rayna to her own devices now.
Diana cast a glance in Kurtâs direction listening carefully to his words. It confused her how carefree he had said such a thing for a celibate priest. She looked away when his yellow eyes turned in her direction. The goth was overthinking what his words might have meant. A slight hope flickered in her chest. She pushed it down as she quickly moved to approach the trio near the street performance.
They needed to finish this tourâŠbefore Diana passed out from swooningâŠ
Ramona stood back quietly as she listened to the painful interviews at hand. She rolled her eyes when Scott began to rant. Storming from the mansion, the Ghost Rider found herself in the gardens of the Institute. The blonde sighed heavily before finding a spot to sit down. Ultimately, she just laid down in the grass. A few memories came to mind as she lay there staring up at the bright blue sky.
Memories of her little sister giggling as their father twirled her around in the air. Memories of the sandwiches and pies that their mother would make for their picnics that they always had once a week during the spring, summer, and fall. Ramona sighed quietly as she sat up and looked around. The silence made her heart ache. At this age, she should be marriedâŠhave a couple kids that would run around in a garden like this laughing and playing. All of that had been stolen though.
Ramonaâs gloved left hand tentatively moved to touch the left side of her face. She did not blame Rayna not one bit. The phantom pain still lingered at times though. Those flickering flames haunted her dreams when she sleptâŠ
âNow what are ya doing over here?â the familiar voice of Logan asked as he approached the blonde. She huffed and glared at him having been startled by his sudden appearance. Wolverine chuckled at her jumpiness as he stood idly a few feet away from her.
Ramona rolled her eyes before extending her gloved left hand beckoning him closer. When he slowly moved over and sat down beside her, the blonde looked at him before gesturing to his face, âYou wearing pretty pink lipgloss now?â
Loganâs eyes widened in horror at her observance. He quickly wiped his mouth off on his jacket sleeve as he grumbled, âJeanâs confusedâŠgirl kissed meâŠâ
She laughed and shook her head looking down at her lap as her right hand fidgeted with the glove on her left hand, âPoor girlâŠcanât blame her for being confused though. The stuff that youâve told me aboutâŠsounds like hell.â
âYou can say that again,â Logan mumbled as he leaned back on his hands leaning his head back to stare up at the sky. He cast a glance in her direction though as he watched the blonde stare down at her hands. Sighing quietly, the feral mutant spoke, âSomethingâs on yer mind, blondie.â
Ramona huffed not appreciating his observation, âCan it. You know I donât like to talk about my problems.â
Wolverine chuckled quietly always appreciating her lack of wanting to overshare and feel like she needed to be heard. Ramona had never been the typical woman. That was what drew Logan in. She was not like all the other women he knew especially not Jean. He never wanted to admit how attached he had grown to the Ghost Rider though. They both knew they were both too dangerous to try something.
Ramona sighed quietly before standing and looking down at the feral mutant. She opened her mouth to say something but closed it deciding against saying whatever was on her mind. The blonde looked up and around the garden before murmuring, âSo my sister decided to go to that mutant nation?â
Logan knew Ramona did not mean it bad. She just sometimes had poor control over how her voice sounded. It commonly sounded like she may have hated mutants to those who did not know her very well. Those who did know her though knew she was only worried about the Firebird.
âShe didâŠdonât know why,â Wolverine replied with a slight shrug as he got to his feet as well. He stared at Ramona who was at eye level with him a trait that always made him smirk.
The Ghost Rider did not say anything as she looked at the garden. Finally after a few minutes, she huffed, âI gotta go.â
Ramona attempted to turn and walk away, but Logan gently grabbed her arm making her stop and look at him. He gave her a look as if knowing something was wrong. Even if she never wanted to talk about what was bothering her, the feral mutant always knew she just needed someone to keep her grounded for awhile.
âJust stay a little longer. Quit listening to that spirit for a few hours. Stay hereâŠwith me?â he asked as the blonde just stared at him blankly. Ultimately, Ramona sat back down on the grass. She would stayâŠjust to please the man beside her.
Alison stood silently beside Magneto in the doorway to the Interim Council. The Ink Demon took note of the individuals that made up this council. Her expression soured upon seeing two members of the Hellfire Club. A long time ago the Hellfire Club and the DCC had had major problems. Those problems had mainly been caused by Alisonâs idiotic brother, Joey.
She took note of Moira who was sitting quietly. When Alison saw Banshee approaching though taking a seat next to the Scotswoman, the Ink Demon sighed quietly glad to see that the only human in the room who actually cared about mutants had someone who would protect her mainly from the Black King and White Queen.
Alison was not listening for several minutes until she heard Magneto speak up snapping her back to attention, âThis concerns me and my X-Men, how?â
âWe need a handsome jawline that begs trust and respectâŠa poster child king,â Emma Frost spoke up causing Alison to sour. She glared at the woman in white who glared back equally as hatefully.
Moira spoke up quickly trying to correct the psychic, âCareful, Miss Frost. Donât go filling this manâs head with such notions.â
Alison tried to keep from snorting upon seeing the look that flashed across Frostâs face. Her amusement quickly faded though when the White Queen sneered, âWhose charitable idea was it to let a human be on the Council? Were no others available to weep over semantics?â
That did not go with Madelyne who quickly piped up sounding aggravated, âMoiraâs a fierce ally to mutants! And we all agreed to Chancellor.â
âYou eclectic social climbing fools wish for Magneto to rule Genosha? Very funny,â Alison asked sounding skeptical. Erik subtly poked the Ink Demon in the ribs causing her to shut her mouth and scowl. Magneto was obviously thinking about the offer though as he walked away from Alison who stood idly by the door still. She watched him with a cautious gaze. If she knew anything, he would accept thisâŠunder certain circumstances.
âOne could argue, and many sadly do, that none of us would be here today were it not for you and your publicity stunt,â Emma Frost mused as she watched the Master of Magnetism with a smirk. Alison immediately glared at the White Queen not liking how the blonde had said that.
âAre there no others better tempered to stomach the squabble of humanâŠdiplomacy?â Erik quietly asked as he hung his head slightly.
âWell itâs definitely not your woman here,â Sebastian Shaw spoke up again. He eyed the Ink Demon with a look of disdain and twisted desire. Alison gave no mind to the Black King. She had had enough of him when she had been running the DCC. There was no use to try and even be civil with the man.
Magneto cast a glare at Shaw hearing what he had said about Alison. She was not just merely his âwoman.â Alison was his right hand! And unknown to most, she was his wife.
âCharles be gone, MagnetoâŠâ Moira spoke up trying to pull the tension from the room, âAnd I may not like; but if Charles trusts you with his X-Men, heâd trust you with thisâŠâ
Alison sighed quietly and looked down at her shoes. The Ink Demon knew that Moira was rightâŠthis was something that Xavier would have wanted Erik to take over in his absence. There were so many variables though, and Alison could think of three right nowâŠ
 HenryâŠRogueâŠand RaynaâŠ
And if Rayna had her way, Gambit would join them much to Alison and Erikâs chagrin. They wanted Rayna to get away from that man. He was not good for herâŠor so they thought.
Alison had lost concentration on the conversation again something she very rarely did. She was supposed to be the one with the business sense, but she was starting to slip. Alison was tired. Having lost so many people in her lifeâŠseeing all the children play in the streets of this wonderful havenâŠ. It brought back memories for the Ink Demon. Some good. Some bad.
A loud chorus of voices pulled Alison from a particularly fond memory as she looked up to see everyone looking between Magneto and her. She stayed cool pretending that she had been listening.
âYou wantâŠwhat?â Frost quickly snapped glaring at the Master of Magnetism who glared back.
âI will become your Chancellor if Alison is allowed to join me as my aid,â he said obviously repeating something Alison had not heard. She merely stood there not at all shocked he had made that counter offer. What he said next shocked her though, âAnd for three to four of the X-Men to reside here asâŠheirsâŠâ
âRaynaâŠdonâtââ Alison attempted to speak but was interrupted by the loud shouts of an upset Firebird.
âNO! YOU WANT ME TO JOIN YOU?! AND WHAT? BE A PRINCESS?! IâM UNSTABLE ENOUGH AS IS! YOU WANT ME TO STAY HERE WHERE THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE?!â
Magneto was slowly becoming aggravated with the young womanâs attitude. He stood from the seat he had been sitting in and glowered at Rayna causing her to snap her mouth shut as she cowered slightly. Seeing her glare and cower made both Erik and Alisonâs hearts ache. They did not like what had happened to the little girl that Alison had found on the streets all those years ago.
With a sigh, Magneto calmly spoke, âWe are merely offering you a place with us. We do not want to make you do anything you do not want to. Youâre too stubborn and independent to make do anything. We know that better than anyone. And you know we donât fear you or your powers.â
âBut I donât want to leave what I haveâŠI canât!â the Firebird murmured as she stared back at the white haired man. He sighed and looked out the window not knowing how to answer. Alison spoke up taking over the conversation, âYou love the thief, donât you, Rayna?â
Rayna looked away from them both hanging her head. She knew the issues that Alison had with the Guild of Thieves that Remy had once been part of. Magneto just did not like the thought of his little girl being all grown upâŠfalling in love with someone he did not approve of.
Alison sighed and stood moving to the pink haired pyrotechnic. She placed a hand on her adoptive daughterâs shoulder making the Firebird look to her, âI may not like himâŠbut maybe heâs not as bad as the others. Make him an offer to join us just as we are offering you. Whatever he decides could help influence your decision.â
The Firebird stayed silent obviously indecisive. She wanted to stay with them, but a part of her wanted Gambit more than them. Looking away once more, Rayna whispered, âHe canât stay anywhere where I could hurt himâŠeven if I care about himâŠ. I donât want anyone I care about to be near me anymoreâŠâ
Alisonâs shoulders that had been tense drooped slightly hearing that whisper. She looked to Erik who looked just as shocked. He moved to stand near the two women placing a hand on each of their shoulders.
âRaynaâŠâ Magneto murmured trying to get the young womanâs attention. She huffed though brushing them both off of her.
âI have never forgiven either of you for what you did to me,â she sneered changing the subject as she took a step back. Alison closed her eyes looking heart broken. Magneto merely looked away feeling shame and guilt flood through him.
Tentatively, the Master of Magnetism placed his hand back on Raynaâs shoulder, âWe didnât want to leave you. We justâŠâ
âWe thought we were keeping you safeâŠâ Alison finished when Erik could not finish his statement. Rayna continued to keep her gaze averted. Her hands clenched into fists though as she tried to keep her emotions in check.
âIt was the worst decision we ever made,â Magneto continued as he gently moved his hand from Raynaâs shoulder to carefully grab the Firebirdâs chin, âI regret letting Joey keep you under his control during the most vulnerable part of your life.â
âI should have known better,â the Ink Demon whispered sounding shameful as she did not even look to the pink haired young woman.
âSo what? You regret leaving me? Taking precious Henry instead?â Rayna snapped becoming defensive. They knew that was coming. Looking to each other before looking back at her, they made a silent agreement.
Magneto began, âHenry was an adult. He joined us willingly as any of the other mutants did.â
âAs much as I hated it, I couldnât tell him no. You thoughâŠI should have told you yes,â Alison continued as she gave the Firebird a tearful gaze, âYou always have been stronger and braver than any of us. And if what youâve told us is true, youâre more powerful too.â
Rayna looked at them flickering her gaze between them as she thought. She turned her eyes away out of stubborn defiance, but the Lehnsherrs knew they were breaking her walls downâŠagain.
âI taught you how to control your powers, little bird. If your powers are becoming more powerful, I will do everything in my power to help you again,â Erik softly said as he watched Rayna carefully.
They stood there for several long minutes as the Firebird thought their words over. She knew that deep down they were the only ones she trusted with her dangerous powers. They could keep her under control better than anyone ever had been able to. Gambit had slowly started to be that person though. So many times on missions when her flames had started to grow too strong, Remy always was there shouting at her distracting her from the panic and anxiety of the moment.
âIâll join youâŠonly if Gambit can join with me,â the Firebird finally countered as she looked at them again. The couple looked at her nodding curtly understanding why she wanted that. They did not like it; but if they could bring her back to their care, they would take it any way they could.
âDeal,â Alison agreed as she clamped a hand on Raynaâs shoulder. Magneto nodded in agreement.
Rayna would make one of two choices nowâŠjoin themâŠor stay with the thiefâŠ
âAnd what about Henry and Anna?â Rayna quietly asked looking between the couple who had raised her. Alison sighed quietly casting a glance to her husband before returning her eyes to the Firebird, âTheyâve made the decision to stayâŠâ
Rayna nodded as her eyes turned to look in the direction of the door. A sigh came from Magneto as he murmured, âQuit being stubborn, Rayna. Either you go patch things up with that man of yours, or youâll feel lost for a long time. Tell him the truthâŠabout everything. Like I told you to do a few days ago.â
She looked at her adoptive father then to her adoptive mother before nodding slightly. Slowly, she moved to the door but stopped once her hand gripped the door handle. Raynaâs lime green gaze turned to the Lehnsherrs as she contemplated asking something. Alison noticing this desire to question something spoke up, âAsk your question, little one.â
âWhat will you do if Remy does choose to join me?â
âWeâll be cordialâŠwelcome him as best we can. Then get used to him beingâŠmore than a coworker,â Erik replied almost strained causing the Firebird to scoff slightly. Her scoff was more out of amusement than aggravation though.
Before any more words could be shared, Rayna quickly left the room rushing down the hall to get to Gambitâs quarters where he had been for the past few hours. She knew he was getting ready for the gala. Fear and panic gripped at the pyrotechnicâs heart as she approached the door.
Rayna stood at Gambitâs door for several minutes hyping herself up. A part of her knew how difficult of a conversation this would be though.
âRem? Are you in there?â Rayna muttered while standing outside Gambitâs door with her hands in her vest pockets. She had not heard any noise come from inside for several minutes and had started to grow worried. Knocking weakly one more time and hearing no response, Rayna cautiously reached for the doorknob twisting it. The door clicked signifying it was unlocked as if he had hoped she would show up.
âKnock knock?â she called out as she entered the room. It was large much larger than a simple room for a few days should be. Raynaâs gaze immediately landed on Gambit who was straightening his bowtie as he looked in a mirror. He was dressed in a crisp white suit with a purple scarf draped over his shoulders. The Firebird had to stop for a moment as she stared at him with wide eyes. He looked good.
As if feeling her stare, Remy turned to look at her. He eyed her for a second obviously thinking about whether he should talk to her or not. She was in his room though. He did not want to seem rude so he greeted her, âWasnât expectinâ a lady callerâŠâ
The expression that crossed Raynaâs face though caused Gambit to pause. His brow furrowed as his frustration with her disappeared in a few mere seconds. Remy was at her side in an instant as she looked away from him. Guilt written all over her features.
âPigeon? Whatâs wrong?â Gambit asked as he gently grabbed her arm, âRay?â
Raynaâs shoulders drooped and the grip on her vest pocket tightened as something crashed down on her as she realized how little she had told him. Gambit knew little to nothing about the real Rayna Vur.
âSitâŠI have something I need to explain to you,â the pink haired pyrotechnic whispered as she looked at him. He nodded curtly as he moved to sit down in one of the chairs in front of the large fireplace of his room. Rayna followed close behind him kneeling down beside his chair. She was silent for several long uncomfortable moments unsure what to sayâŠhow to approach this.
Gambit looked to her expectantly for a moment before looking away out of frustration. He reached into his jacket pulling out a deck of cards beginning to fidget with them. A quiet sigh passed Raynaâs lips as she decided to be blunt.
âIâŠnever have told you about my pastâŠâ
Remy turned his gaze to her as his hands stilled their movements.
âWhen I was seven, I had a nightmareâŠ. All I saw were flamesâŠall I could hear were screamsâŠâ
Gambitâs brow furrowed at her words. He was confused but knew that she needed to tell this story herself without any of his interference.
âIt wasnât a dreamâŠit was realâŠ. My powers came to me in the night. I thought it was just a bad dreamâŠuntil I knew it wasnâtâŠâ
He watched her as she lifted her gaze to meet his.
âMy parents were screaming as they tried to reach my roomâŠand RamonaâsâŠthat scar she hasâŠthat was my fault. In my frightened state, I couldnât get those flames to stop. They just kept going until they turned into a vibrant green. Thatâs why Iâve always hated my powersâŠâ
Remyâs heart ached hearing her story. He had never expected this strong young woman to have such a broken past.
âFor the longest time, I thought I was the only one to survive that fire. I ran the streets of New York City for an entire year. I was a thiefâŠstealing food so I could surviveâŠburning buildings to try and figure out how to control this curse of mineâŠâ
His heart broke even more. They were more alike than he had ever expected.
âWhen I was eightâŠI was foundâŠ. I was taken in by a very kind womanâŠAlison Chios.â
Gambitâs breath hitched in his throat. He could not help but murmur, âYouâreâŠâ
Rayna nodded, âMy legal name is Rayna Chios-LehnsherrâŠI just have always gone by Vur to both spite them and remember my real parents.â
The expression on Gambitâs face was hard to read. He did not know how to react to such life altering information. His gaze pulled from hers for a moment before returning, âBut RebelâŠâ
âHeâs my adoptive cousinâŠor in our case, my chosen brotherâŠheâs the same age as RamonaâŠ. Henry was there when I mourned her before we knew she was alive. HeâŠHeâs been trying to help meâŠâ
 âHelp you?â
 âMy powersâŠIâve been havingâŠproblemsâŠâ
Problems?! Why hadnât she said anything?
âYou been havinâ problems and havenât saidâŠanythinâ?!â Gambit exclaimed betrayal evident in his voice. He stared at her with wide eyes before looking away and returning his shuffling of his cards.
âI donât want to hurt you, Remy!â Rayna snapped as she stood and stared down at him. He ignored her though as he flicked a few cards into the fireplace. She grit her teeth running her hands through her hair trying to keep from losing her cool.
âGambit has a feeling thatâŠthe Ink Demon offered you somethinââŠâ he coolly spoke causing the Firebird to snap her gaze to him again. Rayna sighed exasperatedly.
âI canât control my powers! Do you want me to accidentally hurt you?! I canât live with myself knowing thatâs a possibility!â
Gambit harshly threw one final card into the fire before standing and looking at her, âAnd I canât help? Am I not good enough?!â
Rayna stalled. She stared at him trying not to lose it. There was no need to. The Firebird could see the hurt in those red on black eyes that she loved so muchâŠlovedâŠ. A concept she had not even considered.
âIâm trying to keep you safeâŠâ she whispered.
âWhy? Why do you feel so compelled to keep me safe? Itâs not like ya ever wanted to before!â
Rayna grit her teeth before quickly growling out, âBECAUSE I LOVE YOU, YOU IDIOT!â
Both froze upon hearing her words. She had not meant to say thatâŠnot yetâŠ
âRaynaâŠâ he whispered hoarsely. She shook her head though; and before he could reach out and grab her, Rayna fled from the roomâŠjust like a flighting birdâŠÂ
âDiana?! Have you seen my slip?!â
âNo? Why do you need your slip? That dress doesnât need one!â
âI was just wondering where it was cause itâs not in my drawers!â
 âDid you ask Sev?â
âNo. SEV! DO YOU HAVE MY SLIP?!â
Diana, Madelyne, and Sev were currently getting ready for the gala to welcome Magneto and the Ink Demon. The trio had been hollering at each other asking to borrow something or get a second opinion. Madelyne was having the most trouble since she had not really picked something out. Diana and Sev were picking at their red headed sister relentlessly. It was all in good fun though.
âI have it!â Sev shouted from her room in the girlâs shared apartment.
âWhy do you have it?â Madelyne asked as she poked her head out from her room looking down the small hall.
âI donât like how this material feels,â the blonde replied as she poked her own head around the corner of her roomâs doorframe. Their eyes met, and Madelyne nodded in understanding. Both Maddie and Diana knew that Sev had many sensitivities especially when it came to fabrics of her clothing.
âAlright. Just checking!â the red head replied before retreating back into her room.Â
Diana peeked out now seeing that both women had returned to their rooms. She looked down the hall that led to the living room and kitchen of the apartment before quickly and quietly making her way out there. The goth had left her satchel on the couch. Quickly snatching it up, she retreated to her room once more while digging through it. Rayna had brought something with her that Diana had forgotten when she had left the mansion. A pair of earrings that the Professor had given her on her sixteenth birthday.
Upon retrieving the case from her bag, Diana sat down behind her vanity again opening the jewelry box gingerly. The earrings were not anything too spectacular, but they held great meaning to her. If this was going to be a gala to remember the past and celebrate the future, what better way than to remember her father figure.
Diana gently pulled out a pair of twin bats. Nothing extravagant just simplistic charm. She stared at them for a moment before sighing quietly. Why did he have to go? Why did Gyrich have to be so impulsive and hate-driven? She would never understand.
âDiana?â Sevâs voice gently called from the gothâs doorway startling her. Her blue on black eyes met the blue eyes that stared back unsure. Diana looked to her sisterâs dress knowing Seven was silently asking what the goth thought about it.
With a gentle smile, the goth spoke, âYou look beautiful, Sev.â
Seven smiled happily at Dianaâs words before quickly moving to Madelyneâs room asking the same question. Diana chuckled softly before quickly putting her earrings on and standing to go to her red headed sisterâs room. The pair of clones inside were already laughing and dancing playfully. It was a welcome sight to Diana. She liked seeing them both able to enjoy themselves and be themselves.
âCome on, you two,â the shadow manipulator said as she beckoned her sisters, âWe should get going.â
âYou just wanna see that little priest of yours,â Madelyne mused as she gave Diana a knowing look. The goth shot the red head a glare before turning and moving to the front of the apartment.
âNo comment?â Sev teased as she quickly followed after her black haired sister. Madelyne quickly trailed behind the blonde as they both tugged their shoes on.
âAbsolutely not,â Diana snapped defensively as she quietly put her own shoes on. The clones snickered at their gothic sisterâs defensiveness. They knew how much of a soft spot the shadow manipulator had for the elven priest. A part of them both felt bad though knowing how Diana would not get a happy ending with that manâŠhis celibacy would keep him from ever getting a romantic happy ending. Madelyne had a sneaking suspicion though. She saw the way that the Nightcrawler looked at Diana. It was obvious he was fighting some feelings.
âAlright thatâs enough,â the psychic mused as she tried to stifle her giggles. The three young women soon left their apartment and moved to the gala hall.
So many people both mutant and human bustled about the gala. Some looked uncomfortable in the setting while others looked overjoyed to be at such an extravagant event. Diana had taken to a corner with Seven keeping her company. Madelyne was wandering around the gala greeting people and socializing. That was the part of her that resembled Jean most anymore.
Magneto stood with Sebastian Shaw and Emma Frost speaking with them cordially. He held a glass of champagne in hand as he silently waited for his wife to make her appearance. His eyes watched Rebel and Rogue as they danced on the dance floor talking and laughing quietly.Â
Rayna was no where to be found leaving Gambit to sit at the bar and drink. The Cajun looked especially unhappy from the fight that he and his Firebird had had. He hoped she would show up whether it be just to snub him or let him in. Remy would take either at this point. He just wanted to see her. Their conversation had ended long before it should have. Gambit did not want to join whatever was going on, but it did not mean that he wanted Rayna to join them just to spite him. He knew how she workedâŠsometimes better than she herself did.
âNow what are two beautiful young women doing over here sulking?â Kurt asked as he approached Sev and Diana who had taken up standing in their shadowed corner. Diana had nearly choked on her own spit when the Nightcrawler approached them. Seven quickly greeted him happily, âHi Kurt!â
He chuckled and greeted Sev in return. Kurtâs attention turned to Diana though as he subtly looked her over. Perhaps a priest should not do such a thing, but something about Diana always made him want to break those vows of his. He tried not to stare at the split in Dianaâs dress. That was the most of her skin he had ever seen though. Quietly clearing his throat, Kurt quickly prayed a silent prayer to help him keep from possibly doing something sinful.
âFrĂ€ulein Essex,â the elven priest spoke softly to Diana calling her the correct surname this time. She smiled at him noticing how he had remembered this time.
âThatâs good,â Diana commented. Sev rolled her eyes before gently hitting her sister on the arm as she started to walk away, âIâm going to go find Madelyne. Behave.â
Hearing the way Seven said âbehave,â Diana swallowed thickly before looking to Kurt again. She really did not know what to say so she merely looked away from him and to the small dance floor that had been set up.
âYou knowâŠâ Kurt spoke up as he looked over to the dance floor as well, âA priest can danceâŠand a pretty young woman like you should be dancing not hiding in a corner.â
Diana huffed and rolled her eyes. Her cheeks warmed slightly as she crossed her arms. With a sigh, the goth looked back at him again commenting, âYou sure about that? I wouldnât want you to get in trouble.â
Kurt chuckled before offering a three fingered hand to her. She stared at it for a moment before sighing as she carefully placed her hand in his. He hummed happily in approval feeling butterflies flurry in his stomach.
As Nightcrawler led Diana to the dance floor and began to (respectfully) dance with the goth, the doors of the gala opened revealing Alison Chios. The horned woman was standing confidently as she surveyed the room. Her dress was very befitting of her. Alison wore a tight fitting black dress that displayed some of her inky skin. The Ink Demon spotted Magneto across the room and quickly moved to him.Â
Alison whispered something in Erikâs ear causing him to listen carefully. His expression hardened hearing what his wife whispered. He looked around for the Firebird sympathetically. Upon spotting the other individual who he had been looking for, the Master of Magnetism subtly gestured in Gambitâs direction whispering something to his wife who looked in the same direction. A glare crossed her features before she sighed.
âSomething wrong, Magneto?â Shaw asked quirking a brow at the hushed conversation between the Lehnsherrs. Alison quickly piped up sneering coolly at the Black King, âEverything is and will be fine. As long as you keep your mouth shut and donât make me mad.â
Shaw chuckled darkly as he took a sip from his drink and snarking, âWouldnât dream of it, sweetheart.â
The use of the term of endearment made the Ink Demon fume. She had had her problems with the Hellfire Club in the past, and it seemed those problems were still prevalent in her mind. Before Alison could say something harsh in return, Val Cooper approached calling to Magneto and the Ink Demon.
Rayna was not at the gala. She sat on the roof of the building overlooking the city that Genosha had become. Everything in her told her to stay here where she could not hurt the man she loved so much. Something else in her told her to let him help insteadâŠquit relying on Alison and Erik when she could not handle what she had been cursed with. She needed more in her life than them.
The breeze flowed through her long pink hair. She had cut out some purple that had mixed in almost like someoneâs hair would go white from stress. Something that had started to become a common trait. Rayna did not want to change. It was something she feared more than anything. That was why she feared letting people close.
Henry and Rogue were dancing and talking quietly. Even though the couple had agreed to stay on Genosha to help lead, they felt guilty realizing how hard of a decision this was for Rayna. Henry was used to his chosen sisterâs defiance and stubborn nature, but this was different.
âI missed her for so many yearsâŠand now sheâs having to make a life altering decision that might either reunite us or drive us further apartâŠâ he suddenly whispered capturing his dance partnerâs attention.
âOh sugah,â Rogue cooed as she moved her hand that rested on his shoulder to gently caress his cheek, âThis isnât your fault, honâŠâ
âBut what if it is, Anna?â Henry gently asked as he moved himself and Rogue off the dance floor. The couple found a small table to sit down at. With a quiet sigh, the infamous Rebel looked down to his lap. He had caused this turmoil in his sisterâs life. This was his fault.
âHenry,â Rogue spoke up noticing how Henry was acting. He did not look at her knowing her expression would be one of scolding. This was not his fault.
âI shouldnât have tried to help herâŠâ he murmured lifting his hands to run through his hair, âYou werenât thereâŠGambit was ready to knock me into next year when he found us in the Danger Room. NowâŠsheâs not hereâŠI drove a wall between themâŠâ
âHenry,â Rogue repeated much more commanding this time causing his eyes to turn to look at her. Once his big brown eyes met hers, Anna sighed quietly, âYaâknow. Remy tried to get with me when I first joined the X-Men. After Rayna came along though, you know what happened?â
 Henry shook his head.
âHe almost had a heart attack when he first saw that head of bright pink hair. Man admitted to me more than once how much he wanted to grab it,â she replied shrugging slightly as she smiled almost fondly. Rogueâs eyes spotted Gambit sitting at the bar. Her dark green eyes returned to Henry, âYou should go have a talk with himâŠlike any good older brother would to his lil sisterâs suitor.â
Henry sat there quietly. He still felt horrible. He always did tend to get Rayna into more trouble than she herself could find sometimes. His gaze lifted to stare at the back of Gambitâs head.
âI canâtâŠhe hates meâŠwould not trust me if I talked to himâŠâ
âNow why do you believe that? I know that overgrown swamp rat. He cares more âbout Rayna than heâs willinâ to admit.â
The youngest Chios sighed heavily as he looked to Rogue. His eyes turned away seeing the look on her face. Henry looked to where Anna had been watching their Cajun coworker at the bar. Rebel sighed lifting a hand and running it over his slicked back hair.
âAnd what would I say?â Henry huffed. Rogue hummed quietly knowing he was struggling to make a decision. Ultimately, she replied, âJust talk to âim.â
Gambit sat the bar on the other side of gala. He was attempting to drown his sorrows in alcohol a habit he had grown too accustomed to. His eyes left the shelf of liquor bottles when someone sat down beside him. Although the Rebel was thinking about approaching him, the Cajun was surprised to see the blonde that Diana had claimed was her sister take a seat beside him.
âYouâre hurting,â Seven said as she watched him. Gambit huffed and looked away from this blonde haired clone. He did not answer right away not wanting to have someone pity him.
âYouâre hurting,â she repeated trying to garner a response from him. Remy sighed and looked to Sev with an unhappy expression.
âYa sound surprised, petite,â he coolly replied. He did not want anyone around right now. He just wanted to be aloneâŠdrown his sorrowsâŠ
âWhy say that? I sense it. I know what youâre thinking,â she answered gesturing to the bartender for another drink for the Cajun who seemed pleased by that at least. With a sigh, Seven looked from Gambit in the direction she had sensed RaynaâŠsitting on the roof of the building overlooking the gala hall.
Hearing her words, Remy looked to her with a furrowed brow, âYouâŠâ
âIâm a psychicâŠlike MaddieâŠlike JeanâŠlike Charles XavierâŠâ she said looking to him knowing he was confused, âI donât know what I amâŠbut I knowâŠthat Iâm more than what I was created to beâŠâ
âSheâs a clone. Like me,â Madelyne spoked up startling Gambit who jolted as he looked over to her. The red head ordered a drink and looked to Remy saluting him with her glass, âHereâs to our dashing Cajun.â
Seven rolled her eyes, âThat is not going to help, Madelyne! Canât you tell heâs hurting?â
âOh I can tell. He needs to suck it up. I never figured Rayna to be one who would stick around,â Madelyne mused with a shrug of her shoulders as she raised her glass to her lips. Gambitâs shoulders dropped hearing the red headed clone speak. His heart squeezed in his chest. Was what she saidâŠtrue? Did Rayna really just string him along?
âDonât listen to her,â Sev piped up placing a hand on his arm causing him to look at her, âLookâŠdonât listen to those nasty thoughts in your head. Listen to that heart of yours instead.â
Gambit stared at Seven for a moment. His brow furrowed as he thought about she said. The Cajun sighed and looked at his glass.
âI know Diana told youâŠthat Miss Vur needed spaceâŠbut I think my sister was wrong,â Sev murmured watching him, âRayna needs someone that she knows she can trustâŠthat isnât the people who have made you drift apartâŠâ
Gambit sat quietly as he thought about what Seven said. He took a deep, shaky breath before slowly standing. He needed to talk to her. Rayna would not come to him out of her stubbornness, but Remy could go to her.
âYou read his mind,â Madelyne said looking to her blonde sister who merely smiled softly as she watched the Cajun begin to leave the gala in search of his flamey love.
âNoâŠIâm just observantâŠâ Seven mused as she watched Gambit as well, âIâve wondered if itâs something I inherited from my originalâŠâ
Madelyne hummed as she finished off her drink setting the glass on the bar as she watched the people in the gala. She smiled softly to herself seeing Diana dancing with Kurt a wide, joyful grin on the gothâs face. SomethingâŠsuddenly seemed very off though.
Seven looked to her sister as if sensing the sudden turmoil in the red headâs mind.
âMaddie?â the blonde whispered as she tentatively reached out to Madelyne who suddenly looked out of the large bay windows of the gala building.
A loud gasp came from Sev as she saw the explosion in the distance. She froze unable to stop Madelyne from leaving the bar to go outside and see the explosion better.
It took all of thirty seconds for destruction to suddenly crash down on the once peaceful island.
Screaming suddenly resonated throughout the streets of Genosha. The people in the gala tried to look out the windows. A bright green light and loud crashing could be heard until the glass of the gala hall shattered.
Panic set in as a large Sentinel like being emerged from the ground. Rayna stared at it with wide eyes. She immediately looked to the gala hall feeling her heart begin to beat frantically. Everyone she cared about was inside that building.
The Firebird stalled though. A wave of heat passed over her body causing her to freeze out of fear. Rayna grit her teeth though. She looked down to her hands as that purple flame she had grown to fear began to flicker at the fingertips.
Many of the people under the gala rubble began to awaken from their unconscious states. Diana was one of the first as she pushed rubble off of her body sitting up to look around. Fear gripped at her heart when she did not see KurtâŠnor her sistersâŠ
âDiana!â she heard someone shout. Her gaze immediately turned to see the Nightcrawler teleporting closer. He immediately dropped to his knees when he was close enough. Reaching out to help her up, Kurt teleported her away from the crumbling gala hall. They reappeared on the roof of a neighboring building.
âStay here,â he whispered before disappearing in a puff of purple smoke. Diana quickly scrambled to her feet staring at the Sentinel like death machine as it began to approach them.
 âWhatâŠâ
A large blast came from the machine before a familiar popping sound pulled her attention from the large Sentinel. Rogue and Henry stood before her now, but Dianaâs attention immediately took note of Nightcrawler as he was flung back across the roof. She gasped loudly before shouting his name as she rushed to his side. Rogue followed close behind.
âDiana?â the southern belle choked not daring to try and touch her brother. Diana sighed in relief as she replied, âHeâs aliveâŠâ
A sigh fell from Rogueâs lips as well. Diana looked away from the Nightcrawler after situating him in a more comfortable position. She stood and turned to view the horror before her and her fellow X-Men.
Sudden swearing in Alisonâs voice pulled the trio away from their staring. Henry immediately moved to his auntâs side as she flailed out of her inken form. She was screaming and shouting in anger as she got to her feet shoving her nephew away. The Ink Demon moved to stand between Diana and Rogue watching the Sentinel with a murderous glare. She looked more angry than Henry or Rogue had ever seen her.
âAlisonâŠwhat do we do?â Diana whispered looking to the Ink Demon who grit her teeth. Alison snapped her gaze to the goth pointing a finger as she spoke firmly, âYou stay here. I promised your mother that I wouldnât let anything happen to any of her children.â
Dianaâs brow furrowed hearing Alisonâs words. The Ink Demon had said something about knowing her mother before, but the way she had said that almost sounded as ifâŠ
âWhaâ?âŠyouâre hiding something,â the goth murmured causing the Ink Demon to stiffen as she realized that had slipped from her lips. Alison sighed in aggravation before taking a step closer to Diana whispering, âI also promised your mother to keep her eldest a secretâŠeven from you.â
Diana felt her heart quicken. She had a siblingâŠsupposedly older than herâŠprobably from a different father by how Alison was talkingâŠ
 âTell meâŠâ
 âWe donât have time!â
âI donât care! You canât just drop that and not explain!â
Alison sighed heavily and looked away from the younger woman. She had messed up. In the heat of the moment, she had broken a promiseâŠ. Diana needed to know though.
âHenry!â Alison shouted pulling her nephewâs attention to her. The goth who stood beside the Ink Demon noticeably stiffened.
âYeah?â Rebel asked as he approached. Diana stared at him with wide eyes. He took notice of the gothâs gaze furrowing his brow in confusion, âWhatâs going on?â
âSomething I should have told you a long time agoâŠboth of youâŠâ
In the debris of the gala hall, Rayna was rushing through it directing civilians as best as she could. She was looking for her people though. Coughing caused the Firebird to look in a certain direction. With a slight gasp, Rayna was at Magnetoâs side in a second. Sure he had blown the debris off of himself, but the Firebird still worried.
âMags!â she shouted as she reached his side. He looked to her with wide eyes. Worry was evident in his features as he reached out grasping his adoptive daughter by the shoulders giving her a once over to see if she was ok. He sighed when he saw she was ok. His eyes immediately scanned the area obviously searching for his wife.
âHave you seen your mother?â Erik asked looking back to the Firebird. She shook her head looking around as well, âNoâŠI-I havenât seen herâŠâ
The quiver in her voice made Magneto pause. He clasped Rayna by the shoulder trying to ground her, âHeâs ok, little bird. Heâs capable.â
Rayna looked to her adoptive father for a moment. She nodded curtly before suddenly turning lifting her hands as a large chunk of a nearby building plummeted towards them. Magneto had not even noticed but was proud that Rayna had.
However, the heat shield caused him to pause. His brow furrowed upon seeing that it was not the usual vibrant green but instead a violent purple. Before Magneto could ask, Rayna reached out grabbing him by the wrist dragging him away from the scene. He followed willingly until he had to grab her by the waist and pull her out of the way of one of the Sentinels that had begun to roam the city.
Before Erik could try and defeat it, a familiar ink black creature tore the Sentinel apart. Magneto quickly spotted his Ink Demon with a wickedly angry expression as she released her demonic looking form standing not far from where he and Rayna were. He called to her causing that anger to disappear from her face as she turned to look in his direction.
âThere you are!â Alison snapped as she approached Erik. His expression held relief until he flinched as the Ink Demon hit him on the shoulder as hard as she dared. Magneto chuckled quietly at his wifeâs antics.
âI should throttle you for making me worry!â she huffed before softening when she saw Rayna. Alison immediately reached out wrapping the Firebird in a tight hug, âThere you are!â
Rayna hugged her adoptive mother back relieved to see the Ink Demon safe as well. Pushing away from the Firebird, Alison looked around before turning and whistling. Henry, Rogue, Diana, and Gambit approached. When Raynaâs eyes landed on Remy, she was clinging to him in only a matter of moments. He did not hesitate to wrap his arms around her in return.
âThere ya areâŠya okâŠâ he whispered sounding relieved. Rayna sighed quietly before quickly putting a short distance between them knowing Magneto would be looking on with disapproval. Rayna was right, but Alison did not let Erik stare at the Firebird for long as the Ink Demon turned her attention to her husband.
âDid you see it?â The Ink Demon asked. Magneto looked to his wife nodding curtly, âI did. Itâs Sentinel technology, butâŠthis is on a different scale.â
âItâs some kinda vile Godzilla Sentinel,â Remy spoke up staring at the Lehnsherrs. They looked to him listening to him, âYou go at it, ya end up dead. Canât even dent itâŠ. Weâre tryna evacuate folks, butâŠthe MorlocksâŠthey stuck in the bayâŠ. Right under its bellyâŠthereâs no way to âem.â
Alisonâs expression hardened as she looked to Magneto who turned to her. She spoke firmly, âA promise was made.â
Magneto looked to the group before him as he began to bark orders, âI will draw its fire away from the gardens. Rogue and Diana will clear a path for Gambit and Rebel to the Morlocks. Rayna and AlisonâŠI need you two to save as many as you can.â
With a plan in place (despite how much Alison wanted to scream at him for making her not able to help), the group began to part ways Magnetoâs parting words echoing in their mindsâŠ
We shall not live our days wondering if we could have saved more.
âYa knowâŠnever much cared foâ roulette,â Gambit commented as he ran through the streets with Henry on his heels.
âI know the feeling,â the Rebel agreed before stopping in his tracks spotting a couple of motorcycles. He whistled catching the Cajunâs attention, âLookie lookie!â
Gambit chuckled seeing the set of motorcycles before sneering playfully, âI get the pink one.â
Henry smirked slightly, âIs that a jab about my sister?â
âMaybe,â Remy mused throwing the youngest Chios a glare, âShe still mine.â
âI know. I know. Sheâs happy. Couldnât ask for anything better for her,â Henry replied lifting his hands in surrender as he reached for a green motorbike, âPlus. My eyes are more on Anna anyway.â
Gambitâs gaze snapped to look at Rebel, âRogue? Really?â
âYeah! Youâd be shocked how far you can get with that girl when you can touch her.â
A smirk twisted onto Remyâs features. He did not say anything else as they started their found motorcycles and zoomed off.
Not far from them, Rogue and Diana were following. The southern belle had a disadvantage to the goth, or so it seemed.
âYou sure you can keep up, hon?â Rogue quietly asked Diana who nodded slightly.
âI can keep up,â she replied before dissipating into the shadows. Rogue laughed quietly before flying off after the boys on their cycles.
A distance behind them, Alison and Rayna were directing people to the gardens. They hated it wanting to be in on the action, but this was still an important job. Alison was on edge though. She had no power here. The ink machine she had requested be built under the city had not even been approved. She was high and dry without any form of power. Rayna however was starting to feel far too warm. Usually, heat did not bother her. Something about what was happening thoughâŠit felt as if something was awakening deep in her mutation.
Loud explosions in the distance pulled mother and daughter from their task. They looked to each other before quickly moving in the direction of the noises. The others needed help.
Gambit and Rebel had found the Morlocks just in time. A Sentinel head had somehow been knocked into the Morlocksâ hiding spot but was quickly destroyed by Gambit who threw a few charged cards at it. Henry smiled seeing the small green boy who his aunt had told him about.
âKindly follow us,â Gambit said snapping Rebel from his sudden daze. Henry gestured for the Morlocks to follow. However, a harsh explosion from a nearby car made them stop and duck slightly.
What Henry saw made him pause. Magneto was slowly being worn down. He was bleeding from several different wounds. His clothes were torn. Henry attempted to move to his uncleâs side to help, but someone grabbed him roughly.
âDonât!â Rogue exclaimed as she wrapped her arms around Henryâs middle tugging him to a side alley. He tried to get away, but she was stronger than him.
Shadows wrapped around him to keep him held back. Henryâs gaze looked to Diana who appeared from the shadows. She averted her gaze not wanting to see the pleading look in Henryâs eyes.
Gambit had been thrown back. A pair of hands reached out to help him up to his feet. He looked seeing the Firebird behind him. She was watching the scene with a look of terror in her lime green eyes. The Cajunâs heart ached noting the panic on his pigeonâs face.
âMAGS!â Rayna loudly exclaimed as she tried to get to her adoptive father. Just then, the large beast of a Sentinel shot a blast at him.
Rayna was flung back. Gambit reached out to her grabbing her in his arms holding her close. She struggled and shouted as she tried to break free. Large pieces of metal suddenly began to wrap around the Firebird and Gambit.Â
âDad! Please! Donât do this!â Rayna screamed as she tried to break away from the metal that held her down. Gambit could sense the pain in her voice as he tried to soothe her, âHeâs tryna protect ya, pigeon!â
Erik stared at the familiar lime green eyes that he had grown to adore. His little girlâŠ
She had finally called him her fatherâŠ
The only thing on his mind was how sorry he felt for everything. He had never said how much he loved herâŠ. Alison always told him it was the main reason why Rayna was so defiant against him. He understood now.
 AlisonâŠhis beloved AlisonâŠ
She had given him a second chance when no one else even dared. After being defeated by Xavier, Alison had helped get him back on his feetâŠshown him that he could be worth more than just a mutant rights terrorist. He could fight for those he cared forâŠ
HenryâŠAlisonâs nephewâŠtheir son for all intents and purposesâŠ
Erik had taught him so much. And although Magneto had always had high expectations for him considering who Henryâs father was, the young man had proved to be so much more than his father ever had been. Magneto had never told him how proud he was of HenryâŠ
Raynaâs voice pulled him from his thoughts though. He looked to her one more time before looking to the young boy, Leech, who clung to him.
 âHab kiene angstâŠâ
The next few moments were quick. Once the Master-Mold turned away from where Magneto and the Morlocks had once been, a loud crash could be heard as the metal around Rayna and Gambit broke away. The Firebird kneeled in the dirt for a moment as she grit her teeth heaving breathes. Her rage overwhelmed her as hot, angry tears fell from her eyes and down her cheeks.
âRay?â Gambit whispered as he watched her. Her rage was changing her. Raynaâs once vibrant pink hair was starting to streak with purple. The temperature rose dramatically as she suddenly erupted into bright purple flames. Gambit stumbled back falling back on his rear as he lifted a hand to shield his eyes from the fire.
His breath hitched when he saw her suddenly zoom off in flight. Gambit quickly scrambled to his feet looking around. He had to find a way to stop her before she got killed herself. Spotting his pink motorcycle, Remy quickly moved over to it.
Rayna was consumed by her rage. She was not even aware of what she was doing. The only thought running her mind right now was revengeâŠ
Her attention was suddenly diverted though when she heard the roar of a motor. Before she could register what was happening, she was blown out of the Master-Moldâs eye just as it shot a blast right where she had been. Raynaâs consciousness slipped away as her back hit the ground. She was buried beneath the debris caused by the motorcycleâs explosion.
Someone immediately tried to dig her out though. The Ink Demon had been standing on the other side of Magnetoâs sacrifice. He had not seen her, but she heard those final words he had spoken. A pair of young ink covered hands attempted to help her dig Rayna out of the rubble.
âHere, Miss Chios!â Leech quietly said as he found Rayna. Alison immediately began to dig in the spot that the young mutant was.
âRayna?â Alison whispered when she spotted her adoptive daughter, âRayna? Come on, girlâŠ. Donât you dare die on me too!â
âMa?â The Firebird choked as she returned to consciousness. Her eyes widened when she suddenly spotted a sight over Alisonâs and Leechâs shoulders more horrifying than anything she had ever seen. Alison looked over her shoulder and gasped when she saw the figure of Gambit being held up by the Master-Mold. Rayna attempted to try and get to her feet, but the Ink Demon stopped her, âNo no noâŠstopâŠdonât try itâŠâ
A vibrant pink began to glow over the area though. Rayna made a noise of both pain and fear as she continued to try and get away from her adoptive mother. The Ink Demon was stronger though keeping her held down.
Seeing that vibrant pink gave her pause. Alison moved to shield Leech and Rayna from the impending blast that was. When the explosion occurred though, a loud scream rang out from nearby. Debris never hit Alison. Instead, the sound of shrapnel hitting flesh echoed in the Ink Demonâs ears. That was when she recognized that screamâŠRogueâŠ
A bright light resonated behind Alison before it disappeared as the sound of a body hitting the ground rang in the Ink Demonâs ears. She slowly looked over her shoulder with already watering eyes. There bleeding out on the ground was her nephewâŠher precious Henry. Alison made a noise between a pained shriek and sobbing gasp. She turned away from Rayna and Leech moving to cradle a bleeding Rebel in her arms.
âNo no no no noâŠdonât do this, Henry. Please!â she sobbed as she gingerly caressed his hair. Henry was choking quietly as he stared up at his aunt. With a broken smile, he whispered, âItâs ok, AliâŠitâs all going to be okâŠIâll tell Boris hi for youâŠâ
Rogue was at his side as soon as Alison had grasped him. Her hands were shaking as she tried to reach out to him. His gaze turning to her caused the southern belle to choke out a broken sob, âSugahâŠâ
Henry lifted a hand and ran his knuckles over her cheek as he whispered, âDonât cry, skunkâŠIâll be okâŠâ
He inhaled a shaky breath though as his movements stilled and his hand fell from Rogueâs cheek. Rogue shuttered out a loud broken sob as she gripped a hold of Henryâs jacket and placed her head against his still chest.
Rayna was glued to the crater that now resided in the middle of the city of Genosha. Even though Leech tried to calm her and keep her seated, the Firebird scrambled to her feet and stumbled over to the smoldering crater. Her movements stopped when she reached the edge. She stood there for a moment before slowly staggering to the unmoving figure in the pit.
Her knees hit the ground just a few feet from the body. She did not even feel the tears fall from her eyes as she scrambled closer. Reaching out with shaking hands, the Firebird cradled the limp form of Gambit.Â
A small group of had gathered at the top of the crater watching the Firebird as she wailed. Diana was trying her hardest not to start crying as well; but when she felt the familiar touch of Kurtâs hand on her shoulder, she broke down moving to curl up against the Nightcrawlerâs chest. He held her close soothing her as best he could.
No one could soothe the heartbroken Firebird as she kneeled in the dirt sobbing over the man she had pushed away. She was too late. There was nothing she could do nowâŠeverything she wanted to tell him now was lost on her tongue as the world around her shattered.
 âSharkieâŠdonât leave me tooâŠ!â
Alison kneeled not far away from either of them. Rogue near her as she sobbed over the corpse of the Rebel. The Ink Demon had no body to mourn over though. She was left to cry aloneâŠ. Her heart was finally losing its final crack. Everything seemed to be stripped from her when things were going ok. A small set of arms wrapped around her though.
The Ink Demon hated to cryâŠbut as the tentative touch of young Leech reached out to her, Alison allowed herself to shed a few tears. Just this once. She sniffled and quietly cried unlike the two young women who sobbed harshly.
Soon, her eyes lifted and watched Firebird and Rogue as they sobbed over their lovers. Alison hung her head as she clenched her hands into the dirt. Why did this always happen? Why do I always lose everything?
Whatâs their song - the one that makes them both tear up / grin like idiots?
Slow dancing in the kitchen at 3 a.m. - who starts it?
thank you for these, had a gong show day so just catching up!
Bronwyn fell first -- she had a terrible crush on Tony. But Tony definitely fell harder. He's a loverboy at heart.
I've always thought of Halestorm's Here's To Us as a perfect song for them. They've both definitely fucked up a couple times but in the end it made their bond stronger.
Depends on what kind of dancing. If it's the silly type, Bronwyn. If it's the romantic, slow dancing type, it's Tony.

how would katsuki, midoriya, shoto, monoma, tenya, & shinso court the reader? like what would it be like for them to be suitors & their ways of courting? please and thank you ÊàŹ
the boy is very nervous to court you, worried your parents wonât approve of him or youâll think heâs weird for trying to do everything the proper and respectful way
but your parents easily think heâs the best man for you, and mention it often around you, wanting your future to be with him
he makes diy things for you, whether itâs a bouquet or a keychain to decorate your backpack with, putting time and concentration into each of his artworks
definitely tries to spar with you more to figure out your weaknesses and strengths, genuinely wanting whatâs best for you so you can become a pro-hero
katsuki bakugou
heâs your number one supporter, never letting you fall behind on anything and giving you whatever you need to be the best
if you happen to fall behind on someone, heâs always the one to help you up and get you to the top (with him) again
he definitely always wants you to do your best, and his number one way of courting you is by showing you support
one day, he randomly tells you that heâs trying to court you, and if you donât want that, then to just tell him because he wonât waste his time on someone who doesnât love him
so heâs very straight forward in that way
shoto todoroki
eventually, shoto just becomes straight forward with his feelings, and he tells you he wants to court you, because otherwise, his intentions arenât so clear and you think he just wants to be your friend
he loves spending quality time with you, and will listen to you rant about the most random things until you fall asleep from exhaustion
he without a doubt remembers every single word you say
hitoshi shinsou
randomly has philosophical and deep talks with you, and eventually you know about his true feelings and what lies behind his walls he holds up to protect and hide himself
so you know a lot about him, and he knows a lot about you, he remembers most of the things you tell him too
truly tries to understand your emotions, how and why youâre feeling the way that you do
wants you to feel noticed by him, so he does little gestures and invites you to outside of school events so you know heâs thinking about you
neito monoma
when he starts to get to know you better, he immediately knows that he needs to have you as his partner
literally nothing will get in his way
so he buys you expensive things to impress you, though if youâre confused and tell him itâs just not necessary, he starts thinking more thoroughly about how to court you properly besides flattery
definitely validates your feelings for nearly everything, and showers you with love if youâre upset about something
tenya iida
he definitely waited for the right person, believes there no point in dating if itâs for a short time and not marriage
once the two of you begin to spend time with each other even as just friends, he immediately knows he wants you to be his partner until death
your parents immediately approve of tenya, as heâs a sweet and smart boy, they can definitely see you having a future with him even before the two of you pursue a romantic relationship
he pays a lot of attention to your likes and dislikes, where you go for food during lunch when youâre allowed to be off campus, etc
so he often ends up buying you stuff that you like, simply saying that he remembers you were wishing for an iced tea or keychain, something like that
thanks for requesting this! hope i did this properly
neito monoma who never seems to shut up, also never knows what to say around youâŠ
The support course at U.A. had its own rhythm, a unique hum of activity that was different from the hero courses. You were used to the clanking of tools and the buzz of machinery, but what you werenât used to was running into a certain blond-haired boy every few days.
It all started during the sports festival. Youâd been helping out with the equipment, ensuring everything ran smoothly behind the scenes. Thatâs when you first met Neito Monoma. He had been so intrigued by your work and your passion for support technology that he ended up lingering longer than necessary, asking questions that, at the time, seemed genuine.
Ever since that day, it seemed like Monoma kept showing up wherever you were. In the halls, near the cafeteria, even in the support course workshop when he was supposedly just passing by.
It happened again today. You were working on calibrating a gadget when Monoma suddenly appeared at the door, looking awkwardly out of place.
âUh, hey, yn,â he stammered, shuffling his feet. âI was just⊠um, just checking out how things are going.â
You raised an eyebrow, a little amused. âYou donât need to check up on me. Iâm fine.â
Monomaâs face turned a bright shade of red. âOh, right. I mean, not that I was, you know, checking up on you. Just curious about the, uh, stuff youâre working on.â
Kendo and Hatsume, who were chatting nearby, looked over with interest. Monomaâs eyes darted to them, then back to you, as if suddenly realizing he was being watched.
âRight, uh, so this is the new prototype?â he asked, leaning in a bit too close and almost bumping into your elbow. âCool. Really, really cool.â
You chuckled, trying not to find his nervousness endearing. âYeah, itâs a pretty neat piece of tech. Want to take a closer look?â
âUh, sure!â Monoma said, moving to stand next to you, but his hand accidentally brushed against yours. He jerked his hand back, mumbling, âSorry, didnât mean toââ
Kendo and Hatsume exchanged glances, clearly entertained by Monomaâs discomfort. You tried to keep the conversation going despite his awkwardness.
âSo, have you, um, had any interesting encounters with support equipment recently?â you asked, trying to steer him into more familiar territory.
Monomaâs face reddened further. âEncounters? Oh, well, I mean, I, uh, did see some interesting stuff in the hero course, but nothing as⊠impressive as this.â
The more he spoke, the more tangled his words became. His usual confident demeanor was nowhere to be seen. It was clear that he was tryingâand failingâto play it cool.
âWell, if you ever want to discuss support tech or need any help, feel free to ask,â you said with a smile. âIâm always around.â
Monomaâs eyes widened with surprise and relief. âReally? I mean, yeah, sure! Thatâd be, um, great. Iâll, uh, see you around.â
You nodded, watching as he left the workshop, his steps a little faster than usual. You couldnât help but wonder why he always seemed so flustered around you. Maybe, just maybe, he felt the same way you did.
As Monoma walked away, he couldnât help but smile to himself. Running into you was always the highlight of his day, even if he never quite knew what to say. But heâd keep trying.
Need... Worried asf monoma x barely alive reader who got their ass sent to the hospital... Shit ton of angst and a fluffy ending and my life is yours unc đđ
what silence held | n. monoma
the mission went wrong. she didn't make it out whole. he held what was left, whispering promises and apologies into bloodstained skin, praying she'd come back just once more.
(2407 words)
neito monoma had always been a figure sculpted from layers of meticulous deflection and purposeful arrogance, a carefully constructed image designed to repel rather than invite closeness. beneath that armor, however, lay an earnestness few had glimpsed, an admiration that had quietly rooted itself deep within him, growing stronger with every interaction he had shared with youâan admiration he kept stubbornly hidden behind sarcasm and rivalry.
but now, standing rigid and hollow-eyed before the stark hospital window separating him from your battered form, monoma felt every carefully laid barrier crumble beneath the weight of profound fear. the clinical white lights cast sharp, unforgiving reflections across the polished floors, illuminating your frail, unmoving figure beneath the sterile sheets. the stark contrast between your vibrant spiritâonce so full of stubborn resolveâand the battered body now sustained by machines cut deep into his consciousness, a visceral pain he'd never known before.
your body was a ruin.
blood still crusted around the stitches at your temple, a wound that split your skin down to the bone. your left eye, swollen shut, was purpled nearly black. dried blood rimmed your nostrils. deep bruises bloomed across your collarbone and arms, fingerprints in violent shades of plum and yellow. a jagged gash peeked from beneath the gauze on your abdomen, where they'd reopened you twice due to internal bleeding. a rib had pierced your lung. he'd overheard the doctors say it was a miracle you'd made it to the hospital at all.
inside the room, it was too quiet.
the low whir of the oxygen machine, the faint hiss of air being pushed into your lungs, the soft, consistent beeping of the heart monitorâit should have been reassuring. instead, it felt like a countdown, like a fragile metronome ticking away the seconds you might have left. monoma sat motionless in the corner of your room, the plastic chair beneath him stiff and biting. the rhythmic tick of the wall clock carved into his skull with every passing second, each one sounding louder than the last.
he hated it. hated the silence. hated the way it filled his ears and forced him to listen to the slow, labored breaths you weren't taking on your own. hated the sterility, the scent of antiseptic that clung to the air like guilt. he wanted to scream, but the moment he opened his mouth, nothing came. just the sound of that damned beeping.
monoma sat in rigid silence, watching as your chest rose with the help of the machines, not strength. not anymore. all he could do was sit there and remember. not the good memories. noâthe last thing he wanted, the thing he couldn't stop seeing, was how it happened. how you ended up like this. how he let you end up like this.
and then he was back there.
âč àŁȘ Ë
the air was thick with smoke and ash, turning daylight into a choking haze that painted the battlefield in bruised, sickly hues. rubble littered the ground, the shattered remains of buildings cracked open like bone, and the screams of distant civilians echoed behind the veil of destruction. fires burned unchecked, consuming what little structure remained. it was the kind of scene that stripped away any illusion of heroismâjust ruin, blood, and the desperate need to survive.
monoma was bleeding.
he stumbled behind a half-collapsed wall, hand pressed tightly against his ribs, where something inside cracked with every breath. he had copied a quirk minutes agoâstrength, maybe, or speedâbut the user had gone down too fast, and now the power was bleeding out of him like the rest of his strength. he was running on fumes. his vision was doubled. he was useless.
he was alone.
except for you.
you were still standing. just barely.
ahead of him, through the smoke and flame, you faced the villain who had carved through half your team like wet paper. their quirk was monstrousâpure kinetic manipulation, an ability that turned every limb into a wrecking ball. every punch split concrete. every kick ruptured the earth. the sheer pressure rolling off their body was suffocating.
and you stood in front of it.
you were a wreck. blood soaked your shirt, a dark patch blooming from your side where a rebar had grazed your abdomen. one of your arms dangled slightly off-kilterâdislocated or broken, monoma couldn't tell. your face was almost unrecognizable: your cheek had split open, swollen to the size of your fist, and one eye had completely shut from the bruising. blood matted your hair and dried at the corners of your mouth. your jaw trembled with exhaustion.
but your legs held. barely.
"stay down," the villain growled, voice grating through clenched teeth. "i'll make it quick."
you spat blood at their feet. "you first."
monoma wanted to scream.
you moved first.
you ducked under the first blow. the wind it produced nearly knocked you off balance. you countered, striking fastâa jab to the ribs, a glowing blast of energy from your fingertipsâbut it only staggered them.
then they retaliated.
their elbow cracked against your jaw with the force of a sledgehammer. monoma saw your teeth snap together hard, blood spraying as your head snapped to the side. you crumpled against a lamppost, rebounded, and charged again with reckless, suicidal momentum.
he wanted to stop you. he wanted to grab your wrist and scream that it wasn't worth it.
but he couldn't even stand.
the villain slammed their foot into your stomach, lifting you off the ground. you flew ten feet and landed with a sound that monoma never wanted to hear againâflesh hitting stone, followed by silence. a wheeze escaped you, thin and wet.
you pushed up on shaking elbows, coughing violently. blood spilled from your mouth. you were wheezing, your breath broken like cracked glass. you reached for the pavement, tried to draw strength into your limbs, but your knees collapsed.
still, you got up.
monoma watched in horror as the villain lunged again.
they grabbed you by the throat and lifted you from the ground. your legs kicked weakly, a final show of resistance. your fingers clawed at their wrist, tearing at the skin, but you couldn't breathe.
they slammed you into a wall.
then the ground.
then again.
you weren't even screaming anymore. just hoarse, rasping gasps.
they punched you in the stomach. once. twice. three times. each hit echoed with a sickening crush. blood streamed freely from your mouth and nose. your arms dropped. your eyes rolled. your head lolled.
monoma could barely see. he was crawlingâliterally dragging himself across the pavement, nails scraping along the broken asphalt. he left a trail of blood behind him, from his own split skin, from your splattered remains.
you made a noise. it wasn't a word. just something small. a protest. a whimper.
the villain dropped you like a broken doll.
you didn't move.
monoma reached you in time to catch your head before it hit the ground. your face was slack, your eyes glassy. blood bubbled at your lips. he could feel the broken ribs beneath your skin, the sick heat of internal bleeding pressing against your side.
your chest fluttered. barely breathing.
your lips moved.
he leaned in. "don'tâdon't talk. you're okay. you're okay, just hold on."
your fingers twitched. you tried to raise your arm, but it fell uselessly.
and then, the villain turned.
monoma looked up. he met their eyesâcalm, detached, like they were already moving past this scene.
he didn't have the strength to fight. he didn't even have the strength to stand.
but he spread himself over your body anyway, shielding what little was left of you.
sirens in the distance. voices. shouting. too far. too late.
he screamed your name. screamed for help until his voice cracked.
when the others finally arrived, they had to pry his fingers off you. he was still trying to hold your head. still whispering, "she's still breathing," even though you weren't.
they started cpr before they got you on the gurney.
monoma watched the chest compressions. the blood that seeped through the gauze. the oxygen mask they fitted over your mouth. the way your body jolted with every push.
he saw them restart your heart.
twice.
he saw the paramedic shake their head.
he rode in the ambulance. he held your hand the entire way.
and he didn't realize he was still whispering your name until they pulled him off at the er doors, dragging him back as the double doors slammed shut between you.
and he stood there, hands shaking, blood everywhere, not knowing if you were alive or already gone.
and in that moment, monoma broke.
âč àŁȘ Ë
his body jolted forward, dragged violently back into the present. the smell of blood still clung to his nose, phantom pain still pulsed in his chest where he'd slammed against the pavement. but your hand was still there. still in his. and barelyâjust barelyâyou were still breathing.
he stood up suddenly and crossed to your bedside, dragging the chair behind him, the legs screeching softly against the floor. he took your hand into both of his, warming it with his touch, rubbing gently like he could coax life back into you through sheer willpower. his thumbs traced the bones beneath your skin, too sharp now, too still.
"you always did chase trouble," he whispered again, throat raw. "always leaping into things like you were invincible. i admired it, you know. even when i mocked you, i admired it."
he swallowed, breath shaking. "you make people braver just by standing beside them. you make me braver. and i hate how much i didn't say it before."
his voice wavered as he leaned forward. "you have to wake up. i need you to wake up."
the monitor continued its measured beeping.
and then, in an instant, that beeping stuttered. changed. slowed.
it was like watching a glass fall from a ledge. monoma's head snapped toward the monitor.
then the alarm.
the shrill wail of the machines filled the room, loud and final. flatline.
"code blue! room 308!"
monoma stumbled back as a tidal wave of medical staff poured into the room. hands gripped his arms, pulling him away, guiding him to the wall.
your body convulsed once under the defibrillator's shock. a nurse straddled the bed, counting out compressions as another prepared the next jolt. the beeping was gone. it had been replaced by that long, singular toneâflat and cruel.
he could see the color draining from your face. could see how your limbs had fallen loose, like strings cut from a marionette. you weren't breathing. your chest didn't rise. and he felt something inside him crack wide open.
the compressions were brutal. blood bubbled at your lips from the force of them, smeared across your cheek as your head lolled uselessly to the side. the nurse's hands were slicked in it. every thrust against your sternum echoed in monoma's ribs like he was being punched himself.
"again! clear!"
the jolt lifted your chest off the bed. still nothing.
one of the nurses looked up at another, eyes wide. "her vitals are too unstable. iâi don't know if we're going to get her back."
"we keep going!" another shouted, voice fraying at the edges. "she's young. she can still fight."
but doubt was a living thing in the room now. it crept through the gaping silence between the shocks, through the gory mess staining your gown, through the flatness of your chest.
monoma shoved against the arm trying to steady him. "please," he said, voice low and strangled. "please justâjust do something. don't let herâdon't let her die."
he was shoved back as they resumed cpr. he could hear bones breaking. could hear his own blood in his ears, roaring.
he was watching you die.
and then.
a single, weak beep.
then another.
the line began to flutter, erratic but blessedly alive. the flat tone faded into silence.
"we have a pulse!"
monoma collapsed into the nearest chair like a marionette cut loose. his hands were shaking violently. he reached for your hand againâstill cold, still limpâbut now, thankfully, attached to something living.
he didn't speak for hours. couldn't. his voice felt locked somewhere deep in his chest, behind the weight of what he'd seen. what he'd almost lost.
â
days passed in a haze.
he hardly left the room. ate only when someone forced him. he sat beside you, head bowed, whispering things you couldn't hear but said anyway. apologies. promises. secrets.
he memorized the peaks and valleys of the monitor's readout, flinched at every hiccup in the rhythm. he learned the shift rotations of the nurses, knew which ones brought your meds, which one checked the iv. he hated all of them for seeing you like this.
when your fingers twitched, he almost didn't notice.
then, they moved again.
he sat bolt upright. "y/n?"
your eyes fluttered, unfocused. your lips parted. "neito..?"
the breath he exhaled was more like a sob. "you're awake. you're really awake."
you tried to smile. "i feel like i got hit by a truck."
he laughed, broken and soft. "you look like it too. but you're here."
silence stretched between you again. but this time, it was the kind that held weight.
there were things in the airâthings he had left unsaid. things you'd never had the chance to hear.
monoma reached out, brushing a strand of hair away from your forehead. "there's something i have to tell you."
you blinked slowly, but your gaze was steady. "okay."
"i can't... i can't keep pretending i don't care. you've always meant more to me than i let on. i admire you. i rely on youâ" he paused, breath catching. "i love you. i didn't know how badly until i thought you were gone."
your breath caught tooâbut not from weakness. your eyes softened, a glint of warmth returning to your face.
"i think i've been waiting to hear that for a long time."
monoma swallowed hard, trying and failing to suppress the tremor in his hands. "then i'm sorry it took almost losing you to say it."
you smiled, slow and tired. "i forgive you. but you're not getting rid of me that easily."
he leaned forward, resting his forehead gently against yours. the machines continued to beep, slow and steady. for the first time in days, monoma let himself close his eyes.

Ten years from now, what random Tuesday are they spending together?
Who gets jealous more easily & how obvious are they about it?
Whatâs the darkest âweâll never tell anyoneâ thing theyâve done together?
OHMYGOODNESS IâVE NEVER GOTTEN TO YAP ABOUT THE MISTER AND MADAME ON THIS LEVEL BEFORE AHHHHHHHHH
This has brought me immeasurable joy. Thank you Claudeđđ€
Ten years from now, what random Tuesday are they spending together?
The Mister and Madame always enjoy tea in the gardens (or the lab). I could see Mister Sinister having a hidden manor deep in some wooded area heâs owned for years. Quiet conversations and gentle clinks of expensive China. After? Some experiments in the lab. Just an average day for the most Sinister couple to ever live.
Who gets jealous more easily & how obvious are they about it?
Do not make Mister Sinister jealous. Eve has learned that the hard way. She has an ex. Specifically ex-husband. One that was very obsessed with her. There is one who is even more obsessed with her though. Which we all know who that is.
When dear Mister Sinister is jealous, he gets obsessive. Like with Bastion. He forbids Eve from being in the same room as the cyborg. Sheâs no one elseâs. He didnât go through the trouble of reviving her to even think about sharing.
What's the darkest âwe'll never tell anyone" thing they've done together?
Thereâs too many. Two evil scientist? Theyâve done so many dastardly things together. The possibly worst thing theyâve done? Kill her ex-husband. The reason they did this? Sinister wanted Eve, and Eve wanted a way out. Plus, she particularly enjoyed Nathanielâs company. It was refreshing compared to her idiotic husbandâs. Such bad influence on her drives her to who she becomes as Madame Sinister.
