Tech Bytes: Today is finally the day. Ubuntu 17.04 "Zesty Zapus" is available for download. No, this is not an Alpha or Beta, but an official stable version of the Linux-based operating system. Unfortunately, the release is a bit tainted -- it uses Unity as the official desktop environment, which Canonical has announced will be killed. Not to mention, there has been some controversy regarding some comments by Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth. Just yesterday, the CEO of Canonical announced she is leaving the position.

Ubuntu 17.04 comes with the Linux kernel 4.10 which was announced in 

February this year. Kernel 4.10 brought improved support for new ARM 

platforms, Raspberry Pi 3, and Surface 3 along with improvements in the DRM 

drivers for AMD and Nvidia.

In Ubuntu 17.04, systemd-resolved in now the default DNS resolver. The GNOME core applications have been updated to version 3.4 excluding Terminal (3.20), Evolution (3.22), and Nautilus (3.20) and Software Center (3.22).

Unity 8 arrived with 16.04 LTS but you can try it as an alternate session before it gets ditched. Also, Ubuntu 17.04 has dropped the support for 32-bit PowerPC platform. But the platform is already obsolete, so it won’t concern many users.

Tech Bytes: A new open-source project, Anbox, from a Canonical engineer lets you run Android apps natively on Ubuntu and other Linux-powered desktops.

It differs from several existing projects that allow Android apps to run on PCs. Instead of using emulators, Anbox employs Linux namespaces to run Android in a container on the same kernel as the host operating system, allowing Android software to run like native apps on the host.

Anbox is a container-based approach for booting a complete Android system on a Linux distro. This allows one to run Android apps easily on a distro without any emulation. Anbox is in Alpha stage, so one should expect few crashes and instability. Currently, Anbox is supported by Ubuntu 16.04 and later. 

Anbox is currently in a "pre-alpha development state", so while it should allow Android apps to run natively on Ubuntu or Debian, it isn't stable.

On their website, the Anbox developers write that Anbox puts the “Android operating system into a container, abstracts hardware access and integrates core system services into a GNU Linux system.”

At the moment, only Ubuntu 16.04 LTS or later is officially supported by Anbox. To install it on your system, open Terminal and run the following command:

sudo snap install --classic anbox-installer && anbox-installer

At the moment, Anbox is still in pre-alpha stage and you should expect some instability and crashes. As Anbox is an open source project, feel free to access its code on GitHub.

In contrast to Google's implementation, Anbox doesn't allow any direct access to hardware devices. For example, it bridges Open GL ES to the host. In Chrome OS the container gets access to the host kernel side of the graphic subsystem to allow fast rendering. Tech Bytes: People's passwords could be exposed with just a tilt of their phone, according to a new study.Research from Newcastle University shows that PINs and passwords can be found just by watching how a phone moves when it is being held. And they warn that same information could be used by malicious websites and apps, to gain access to the most personal parts of people's lives.

The research states that the case of websites being accessed via mobile web browsers is the most troublesome as a malicious site can expose the device to such sensor-based monitoring. By getting the access to such data, a hacker can determine if the target is walking, traveling in a car, or sitting.

Dr Mehrnezhad said: "More worryingly on some browsers we found that if you open a page on your phone or tablet which hosts one of these malicious codes and then open, for example, your online banking account without closing the previous tab, then they can spy on every personal detail you enter.

The research team has also contacted major web players like W3C and Mozilla to address the issue. The work needed to fix this issue will be a tough line to walk.

Based on this security risk posed by the onboard sensors, a team of researchers at Newcastle University has published a paper. The team was able to crack the phone’s four-digit PINs with a surprising 70% accuracy on the first try. The accuracy increased to 100% by the fifth try.

Tech Bytes: Google appears to have started work on a completely new operating system, but no one knows quite what it's for. The project's name is Fuchsia, and it currently exists as a growing pile of code on the search giant's code depository and on GitHub, too.

Looking into Fuchsia's code gives us a few clues. For example, the OS is built on Magenta, a "medium-sized microkernel" that is itself based on a project called LittleKernel, which is designed to be used in embedded systems (computers that have a specialized function and often don't need an actual operating system, like the software in a digital watch). Similarly, both of the developers listed on Fuchsia's GitHub page — Christopher Anderson and Brian Swetland — are experts in embedded systems. Swetland is a senior software engineer at Google and Anderson has previously worked on the company's Android TV and Nexus Q projects.

In the latest development, Google’s open source operating system has got a new logo, Ausdroid reports. Back in August, Fuchsia’s GitHub repo just had a square and colorful logo. The new logo looks a styled infinity loop.

Well, we've certainly got the beginning of Fuchsia, but where it goes next isn't clear. From what we can see, it's currently being tested on all sorts of systems. Swetland says it's "booting reasonably well" on small-form factor Intel PCs (NUCs) as well as an Acer Switch Alpha 12 laptop ("although driver support is still a work in progress"), while another Google developer involved in the project, Travis Geiselbrecht, says they'll soon have support for the Raspberry Pi 3. At this rate, it looks like Fuchsia will be popping up all over the place.

Tech Bytes:Right now, there are three main types of RAM you can buy for a consumer-grade custom PC: DDR3, DDR3L, and DDR4.The main notable improvements that DDR4 makes over its predecessor, DDR3, are a greater range of available clock speeds and timings, lower power consumption, and reduced latency. With DDR3, the options for your clock speed (i.e., how fast the RAM can read or write data) are primarily geared to one of four different choices: 1333Mhz, 1600Mhz, 1866Mhz, and 2133Mhz, with 2133Mhz being the maximum limit. 800Mhz and 1066Mhz configurations do technically still exist, but for the most part these have been phased out of production in favor of their faster cousins. DDR4, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to have any kind of ceiling on its clock speed so far, at least not one manufacturers have been able to reach. Every time it looks like it’s gotten as fast as it can go, someone else one ups the rest of the competition and sets the new standard in extreme performance. Just this month, RAM makers G.Skill showed off a whole new brand of crazy with their 128GB DDR4 configuration, complete with four individual 32GB sticks each clocked to 3000Mhz, while the 8GB G.Skill TridentZ series is already being sold on shelves at 4266Mhz.

DDR4 RAM looks faster on paper

When studying data transfer rates of RAM, you'll see it measured in either million transfers per second (MT/s) or gigatransfers (billion) per second (GT/s). A higher transfer rate means you have more bandwidth and will thus be able to transfer more data at once. DDR4 RAM can transfer data at a rate between 2133MT/s and 4266MT/s, while DDR3 RAM can only hit transfer data rates between 800MT/s and 2133MT/s. Another number you'll see is the clock speed, which is how fast the RAM can read and write data. The clock speed number, represented in megahertz, is the number of cycles per second the RAM can perform.

Like any technology fresh on the market, sticks of DDR4 RAM will obviously be more expensive than their DDR3 counterparts. When comparing two models of RAM from the same manufacturer, we found that a pair of 8GB DDR3 Savage sticks (16GB total) clocked to 2400Mhz cost $103.99 on Newegg, while the same pair in DDR4 costs $129.99 — that’s about a 21% increase. That’s not too terrible all things considered, but it’s still more expensive. Thankfully, the cost of DDR4 has dropped considerably over the past year, and will only continue to do so as people start to adopt it en masse.

Tech Bytes: The developers of the Debian-based Parrot Security OS distribution have announced today, March 8, 2017, the general availability of version 3.5 of the ethical hacking and penetration testing oriented OS. What’s new in Parrot OS 3.5?

Prominent new features included in Parrot Security OS 3.5 are out-of-the-box printing support via the latest CUPS (Common Unix Printing System) drivers, experimental support for the Cinnamon desktop environment, re-implementation of the ZuluMount mount utility for zuluCrypt, and the Cryptkeeper encrypted folders manager tool.

Additionally, it comes with virt-manager, an KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) and LXC (Linux Containers) virtual machine manager, the SiriKali graphical tool for managing folders encrypted with eCryptfs, EncFS, CryFS, SecureFS, or GocryptFS, as well as an on-board virtual keyboard.

Of course, numerous of the security tools included in the distribution have been updated to their latest versions, and many other that weren't available until now have been included. Parrot Security OS 3.5 also ships with the security updates released upstream for Debian Testing (Debian GNU/Linux 9 "Stretch") and Debian Sid.

It is also worth mentioning that the Mozilla Firefox 45 ESR web browser was replaced with Firefox 51, which comes with up-to-date security fixes and plugins, as well as improved and clean default configs. The gtkdialog, penmode, airmode packages have been removed from this release, including their dependencies.

As expected, Parrot Security OS 3.5 ships with many updated and tested packages from Debian. This release is powered by Linux kernel 4.9.13. Soon, Parrot team will start working on its patches for Linux kernel 4.10.
