Ok, so the outcome of this post will likely be one of three things:

1) I think way too much into things,

2) everyone else been knew and I’m a slow dumbass, or

3) I’m an absolute genius who cracked the fucking Da Vinci code.

Anyway, regardless of which one it ends up being, here goes…I think I have worked out why Korn III is called Korn III.

Something being referred to as number three would insinuate that there was also numbers one and two, right? So obviously “Korn I” was just Korn, their debut self-titled album. But there doesn’t seem to be a “Korn II”, we just jump straight to the third one. Let’s go through the possibilities.

We know it isn’t their third album. That was Follow the Leader in 1998 - Korn III was their ninth studio album. We know it wasn’t released in 2003 (which Take A Look In The Mirror was) - it was released in 2010. It isn’t the third time their name has featured in the title, only the second. There weren’t three members, there were four. So what other possible reasons for the use of the number three are there?

I’ll tell you.

When the band began, and also when they released the album that is essentially “Korn I” (given that the firsts of series usually don’t have a number), the lineup was Jonathan, Brian, Munky, Fieldy and David. That was the first “version”, if you will, of the band.

then when Brian left the band in 2005, they released See You On The Other Side without him - the lineup was then just Jonathan, Munky, Fieldy and David. the second version of the band.

(So I guess technically SYOTOS is “Korn II”.)

David left before they could release Untitled in 2007, but they didn’t really have an official drummer for it. They got Terry Bozio to record the drums on the album, but he wasn’t an official member of the band. They also got Joey Jordison to tour with them, but he wasn’t an official member of the band either. It wasn’t until 2008 that Ray auditioned to be their new drummer and became an official member of Korn. So, by 2010 and the release of Korn III, the band’s official lineup consisted of Jonathan, Munky, Fieldy and Ray. And this was the third version of the band.
