It’s so easy to have characters admire someone without relying on their appearance.

she was basically the Dominican Lupita Nyong'o (not dr, like- the island Dominica), basically verry beautiful and verry dark (this was also the year fenty came out with it’s foundation and I remember her being so excited about it!). I threw a party on Valentine’s Day, somewhere along the line of that night someone dared me to give her a hickey (we where playing a game of truth and dare and it was all consensual and agreed upon but we where getting more bold b/c of Valentine’s Day and all of us where single) and she looked up at me and said “lol good luck” and I was just fucking bamboozled that I couldn’t.

I was so suprised that hickeys just wherent a thing that could happen to her and other dark skinned people. it was my first real wake up call that like- not all people experience romance and relationships the same way that I could, and knew after that I needed to better understand the different ways that we experienced life in order to be a better friend and a better person.

She knew- always knew that she could give me hickeys but I couldn’t give her any but it was something I had no idea about. that kind of internally centric view- where white people are able to see themselves represented but poc are not- how the system educates poc about whiteness but not white people about blackness with something as seemingly simple as romance- only goes to show how deep our racist systems are. ingrained bias affects us, and our idea of love- without us even being aware of it.

I had always considered hickeys a marker of a relationship- getting marked by your partner and seeing the evidence of that love days after- was something she and so many other people couldn’t experience? I don’t think I ever looked at fiction the same way after that, and I know- there are probably a few times that I have slipped up and subconsciously coded my chareters as white, but I don’t want anyone to feel excluded from the kind of love that I write into my stories, to feel like they can’t picture themselves as the m/c.

I’ve felt it only a handful of times while reading fanfiction- the jarring 4th wall break where you realize “oh this person experienced something in a completely different way than I could” and all of the suspension of disbelief goes away, but I think it must happen with poc when they read fanfiction all the time. I don’t want anyone to be separated from my softness or the fantasy of healing, of a better world, of a love you can swear on, or anything elce that I write.

-the avatar is important bc he can bend all the elements and no one else can. There hasnt been one for a while and the fire nation is taking over

-siblings are like "well guess we have another brother" and they start on a journey to teach him how to avatar correctly. They ride A giant flying fluffy thing not unlike the luckdragon from neverending story

-meanwhile in the fire nation we've got todoroki minus the ice (zuko) and his mean dad sends him to find the avatar thinking that he'll definitely fail. I think his dad also tries to kill him. He's obsessed with honor. Zuko's nice uncle is worried. Todoroki didn't get a nice uncle Zuko is lucky in that department. Zuko is unlucky in most other departments

-when zuko finds the avatar he ends up joining up with him ? And he goes from having a weird bald+ponytail hairstyle to 2000s emo kid who just discovered mcr hairstyle. It looks nice on him.

-at some point sokka has a gf who turns into the moon. I am unclear on whether or not sokka is a bender. "That's rough, buddy" says Zuko like a king

-zuko's sister was also abused by their dad but didnt get a redemption arc but instead goes batshit. Me too, sis
