Magic Baggie
For my first materials project representingĀ ābody,ā I used paper bags as a type of vessel or container. However, I got feedback that I didnāt really use those bags in a way that contained much. For my final project, I PUT ALL THE THINGS INTO A PAPER BAG and tried to express my relief that the semester was over. :)

10-Day Project: Memory
I am interested in the little memories we often force ourselves to keep for a short period of time.
I realized I make lists to remember these small tasks throughout my days.
I decided to use list-making as an art form.
I created different kinds of lists, emphasizing different tasks to remember, accomplish, or fail.
Throughout this project, I realized how much space these small memories were occupying in my thoughts.
Towards the end of my project, I made lists of things I deemed more important to remember, yet appeared to be equally as ālittleā thoughts throughout my day.
Treating my every day thoughts and activities like an art project, provided me the necessary distance to observe my own behaviors and recognize areas to improve.
Day 2:
After compiling lists of nonsense words, I began recording the words in a program called Audacity and distorted the nonsense sounds until they seemed somewhat like recognizable words.
Then I tried stringing together the sounds into a nonsense sentence and manipulated it to see what would happen.
DAY 10:
In this song, I blended some of my audio recordings with sampled sound clips. The last ArtWorks song represented a few of the group memberās favorite sounds, however my favorite sounds werenāt included with them! My inclusion in the song was represented by the overall organization and manipulation of the sounds, however, I wanted to include my aesthetic preferences into this song as well. One of those preferences manifested as a recording of a construction site near my apartment. By using the hand-recorded sounds and including my own favorite sounds, I felt like this process brought me closer towards ābuildingā a better understanding of the ArtWorks group and of this media.Ā
DAY 9:
Over the past few days, Iāve recorded sounds with a hand-held recorder. While still interested in capturing these organic/mechanic sounds, Iāve been thinking about the responses I was given at ArtWorks. Their responses provided a snippet of insight into their worlds, and as I was going about my day, I found myself reminded of them when I heard these particular sounds.Ā
Instead of sampling sound clips of wind howling, leaves rustling, or engines revving, I recorded a few of the sounds first hand. This in some way, felt like a more authentic way of representing the group membersā favorite sounds.Ā

DAY 8:
During my weekly practicum at ArtWorks at the Harold Washington Library, I decided to incorporate the group membersā favorite sounds into a song. Most people listed calming sounds found in nature like rain, the ocean, leaves rustling, and wind blowing. Others answered with instruments like classic guitar, jazz trumpet, or jazz organ, and some responded with mechanical sounds like a revving car engine or a train horn blowing in the distance. Although my favorite answer wasĀ āthe sound of a lioness attacking an elk.ā
Everyone in the group seemed really open to being included in my sound project. It was particularly encouraging to use this project as a way to break the ice with the newcomers to the open studio, but it was also a casual way to get to know the returning members better.Ā
DAY 7:
Using my collage process as a guide, I began thinking of more ways I could compose a song. With visual art, I typically just collect pieces Iām drawn to and then intuitively arrange them, but how do I arrange them? Sometimes the individual fragments mesh to create one whole image, and other times, each piece stands out at different moments and creates a narrative within the imagery. This was my attempt at storytelling.
DAY 6:
When I first started this project, I was only using nonsensical words, and after creating sounds only using my voice in Day 5, I ran into a similar dead-end. Though there are infinite routes to utilize the voice exclusively in a project like this, I wasnāt getting the aesthetic I wanted. Iāve been stewing on the similarities between sampling songs and collaging images. The process has essentially been the same; Iām just exercising my ears instead of my eyes, hearing textures and empty space instead of visualizing them. Both art forms can be limited by the clips available and the space in which to arrange them. Ā
After talking with some people who are familiar with sound sampling, I was direct to the program Ableton, which several DJs utilize to easily blend and manipulate their sampled sounds. In this piece, I played with textures--both from the original sounds made and the applied textures generated from the software--and composed them in a program much more suited to my needs!
DAY 5:
Iāve mostly been sampling other artistās songs and combining them with my own sounds. Due to the lack of technical ability to play the instruments I love to hear (plus not actually owning any instruments), I tried experimenting with makings sounds only derived from my voice. I felt ridiculous making sounds without the accompaniment of any music and eventually just went with it. After several different takes, it was actually liberating to make silly noises and my self-consciousness took a more intentional, comedic form.Ā
DAY 4:
Instead of exclusively using clips from other peopleās music, Iāve tried incorporating my own sounds into the mix (āmumbleā from Day 2). I still have this disjointed aesthetic in mind, although Iāve abandoned all ideas of producing āgood music!ā Instead, Iāve mainly focused on how the sounds can be altered in Audacity. As an artist, itās a very uncomfortable feeling to be in a creative world in which I canāt fully actualize my ideas!Ā Ā

DAY 3:Ā
I quickly realized that I was going to accomplish very little by just using words. What was really interesting me about my inspirational songs wasnāt just the distorted elements, but rather the juxtaposition of sounds (DERP, thatās what music is. Itās embarrassing how simple these concepts are, and how theyāve been going straight over my head). The songs Iāve been attracted to are simultaneously eerie and calm, aggressive and lonely, organic and mechanic. I sampled and manipulated a clip from a particularly energetic song (King of Song by Marching Church) and paired it with a sound typically associated with serenity.Ā
DAY 1:Ā
I donāt know much about music. Despite various lessons throughout my childhood, I know very little. I donāt know much about technical elements of songwriting or whatās considered āgood,ā ābad,ā or ātrendy.ā I donāt consider myself as having good taste, and I definitely would not consider myself a musician by any means. So why Iāve decided to use āsoundsā as my medium for this 10-Day project is beyond me!
I may know nothing about music, but I do know when Iām moved by it. & lately Iāve been moved by music that sounds distorted in some way, like hearing noise that sounds like words, but donāt sound like words. So thatās where I started. I made nonsense words by studying simple phonetic sounds and using an app called āSyllables Trainer.ā
