honestly im not really sure if its clear to those who arent indigenous or otherwise genocide affected, but natlan's fourth act and really just the idea of abyssal invasion (obvious metaphor for genocide and colonization) and corrosion and havjng to balance the preservation of culture and memory against everything else (clearly indicative of cultural and ethnic cleansing and protecting against it) are so.......extremely powerful. fighting and just having to watch people drop and witness all that is lost and cannot be reclaimed is very poignant and i hope people dont fail to realize this because this does mirror the effects of imperialism and colonialism irl and that remains relevant to this day. if its horrifying in the game, please realize this is what real life indigenous people and many others have faced in history and still are facing now
as retrospect later on, a lot of people did miss this it seems like. it's unfortunate honestly. i'm glad a lot of people in the notes did see it, but it does worry me that so many didn't. by no means will i ever glaze natlan's character designs because indeed we were robbed (especially with it being implied by datamines that they were originally darker skinned but some higher up forced a change (nauseating)), but the writing i feel is being dismissed as boring or bad and to be honest it hurts a little as a native american β an indigenous person. more than that, though, it's worrying that people are not recognizing blatant colonialism criticism and metaphor. the abyss encroaches on a society that has been fighting it off for centuries, and claims hundreds of lives and erodes the culture continuously leaving the tribes in disarray to the point of depictions of post-war trauma and things like mavuika having to sacrifice all of her artifacts in her room for the sake of saving lives. it could not be more obvious. people not recognizing it is more than a little frightening, especially as this tirade of genocide terrorizes indigenous peoples to this day with very few eyes on it. when you are fighting back the abyss, you are supposed to be noting that they are the metaphorical colonizers trying to creep over a land and the night kingdom (the most blatant symbol of cultural erosion as the ancestors of natlan are desecrated and waning away). natlan is not the nation of war because they are violent, it's because they are forced into a war and they have no choice but to fight, and they inverted the violent savage racist stereotype on its head in a way that relieved me quite a lot. however, people are not getting it. something about a story of colonization and a native population's efforts to stop it being brushed off as boring just because people seemed to expect the nation based off brown and black people to be violent sits badly with me. basically, listen to what the story is telling you. it's not boring, you just are lucky enough to not be affected.
back when it got first released and people were playing and reacting, it left a sour taste in my mouth when people laughed or reacted like Tupac's name was a joke.
This was, for me, clearly a very specific reference to Tupac Amaru II, fighting against spaniard colonization (represented by the abyss in the game).
When Mavuika confronted Capitano about his plan to solve the invasion and told him the tribes history, stories, memories and culture were also important and sacrificing them meant also losing in a different way, I was so touched. People have gotten their culture erased by people thinking they know better all over the world, having a character put a stop to it so resolute was something that I felt very deeply.
I always saw Natlan as story of resilence and continue fight against something that threatens not only to kill you but to destroy your whole life and erase your culture. It's not coincidence the ultimate goal, other than fighting off the abyss, was to restore ley lines to allow their culture and ways of living to persist.
As an addendum, another thing that stood up to me was the mention of time as something circular, present and past and future all happening at the same time. As an archaelogist from LatAm, time being circular is such an abundant motif in rock art and different cultures that I loved it was present throughout the narrative. Same with the afterlife as a place that exists and where souls go and might be reborn.
And one last thing is that I liked how technology advance the tribes are, how they adapt to their environments and live with the creatures (be animals or saurians) in harmony in a non-explotative way. Saurians aren't pets, they have agency and lives too. Hyv doesn't have the best track record but subverting the tropes and not meeting the expectations of Natlan being a barren, empty, colorless lifeless wasteland with war-mongers savage tribes and instead showing communities that despite war, keep resisting, keep living and figthing was the best call they could make.
I'm not saying Natlan is perfect, but it's narrative it's good, it's message it's important.
i just wanna say if your issue w the natlan story is that the indigenous characters arent violent fighters enough for you and dont cause enough war or shed enough blood you're sadly racist. if indigenous people being happy and not suffering the entire plot because of the oppressor makes you angry you need to reexamine why our joy in the face of adversity instead of becoming cruel and consumed by hate makes YOU upset because you're toeing the line of the savage stereotype if not straight up crossing it with gusto. no natlan should not have been a violent volcanic wasteland nation and if you think so you do seriously have to unwrap your anti-indigenous sentiments (and that is NOT just native americans) and maybe learn anything about how we actually live instead of getting excited about our pain lol there's a reason the natlanese weren't given the choice about whether they wanted to be the nation of war or not

Today is Rafif's birthday! She's turning 9 today! Wishing for her to have many many more birthdays in safety, peace, and joy in a free Palestine. Drew a Barbie for her since Ameera told me she loves Barbie toys!
It would mean the world if you could send her well wishes and donations to her family's fundraiser dedicated to their survival in Gaza ππ©· A Barbie doll typically sells for around $15 (from what I found online), so imagine if everyone seeing this was able to pitch in that amount to their fundraiser!

as a native person this might be the worst thing that has happened since columbus docked we actually live in a reality where people write colonization fanfic. its native american heritage month man day ruined

Today's vetted fundraisers
My name is Ayaa, a 24-year-old teacher from Gaza City. I used to live a peaceful life with my family in our home, a 6-story building that we built through years of hard work. Sadly, it was completely destroyed, leaving us homeless.
My brother and I ran a language training center where we taught English to kids, teenagers, and adults. We were passionate about our work and had big dreams, but the war shattered everything. One morning, we woke up to the news that our center had been destroyed, along with our family car, which my mother had bought by selling her jewelry.
We have lost everything, and now we turn to you for help. Your kindness and support would mean the world to us as we try to rebuild our lives.

how would you continue under these conditions?
even though @hildanasr1 has been fundraising on here for several months and been vetted by mohammed ayesh w gazaevacuationfunds since october 9, her family has barely received any donations.
on top of surviving under constant shelling, losing all sense of stability, living with nine people crammed into a tiny tent afflicted by snakes and insects, struggling to find adequate food every day, and the terror of being pregnant (!!) for the first time when healthcare infrastructure is constantly at the brink of collapse--hilda has to go through the demeaning, frustrating process of navigating tumblr and twitter to ask for help. she endures constant disappointment and annoyance because it's her family's best shot to survive.
this is exhausting. these people are exhausted! what else does she have to do to win our attention and sympathy?
