Perhaps he's heard of him or they've met once or twice roach meet season one Jayce a few weeks after he broke out of Stillwater and Jayce helped lead him away from enforcers because he was intrigued by his ideas for hextech and clever thinking and they grew close roach slowly stopping his mercenary work after act 1 and starting to work with Jay and Vik in the lab pleading his case to the council and being forgiven by the end of season 1 and in a poly with Jayce and Viktor (after a while they learn roach is just the work name roach uses for clients and his real name is Bex *deadname Bea) And after season one things start to go wrong with the whole Viktor situation Jayce telling him and it all going awry when Jayce disappears into the core and when he comes back (the Bex I'm using is after the war in s2 Jayce and Viktors both seemingly dead) and roach stays with Xemenia and takes up Jayces spot on council completely abandoning hextech in the fear it will cause ruin again. His new purpose is caring for Cait which is what he believes Jayce and Viktor would have wanted.
