according to An Immense World, apparently giant squid eyes are, like, UNREASONABLY large, even for something their size living at those depths. the next largest eyes on earth, blue whale eyes, are less than half the size, and swordfish, who live at similar depths as giant squid and have the largest eyes of any fish, have eyes that could fit inside a giant squid's pupil.
eyes hit serious diminishing returns wrt resource costs vs vision quality as they get bigger, so the question became: what the FUCK do giant (and colossal) squid need to see so badly that they couldn't see with swordfish-sized eyes that's justifying that massive energy cost? that nothing else in the deep ocean needs to see so fucking badly??
turns out the one strength eyes that big really have over much smaller eyes is: seeing large glowing objects in water deeper than 500 meters from an appreciable distance.
sperm whales are the primary predator of giant squid. sperm whales don't glow. BUT! water that deep is full of bioluminescent creatures-- these creatures light up when bumped into. something a sperm whale's size is continuously bumping into those critters, it's just surrounded by a glowing field all the time when it's swimming at those depths, visible from a distance-- if you have the right eyes-- as a massive glowing shape. so basically the only reason to have eyes the size of soccer balls is if you live in the deep ocean and your life depends on having a heads up when a hungry sperm whale is lurking around
and also I gotta say, the imagery... the huge lurking threat betrayed only by the ambiguous glowing shape of its movements through the water, is really evocative, if spooky deep-sea games aren't already using that to make things extremely ominous then they should really start
for no reason whatsoever here’s a reminder that if you consider yourself a leftist/punk/abolitionist/anarchist/radical in any sort of way and get called into jury duty, you are to become the most square person on earth during the jury questionnaire!!!
don’t be that guy who says fuck the police in the jury questionnaire! that just gets you sent home! if you want to generate change, interact with the case and use your jury vote for good! ESPECIALLY if it’s a high profile case!
Remember, when you're on the jury, a good "that cop's story didn't add up" will sway a lot more Chads and Karens than "fuck the police."
Had jury duty, can confirm!
An innocent man is home with his family instead of spending his kids' whole childhoods in jail for "resisting arrest" when none of the cops could agree on why he was being arrested in the first place. (But it definitely had nothing to do with him being a Black man in a nice car, honest! 🙄)
And it still took like two hours of delibration after we'd heard all the evidence because one lady was so gung ho about believing everything the cops said, even when not a single goddamn one could agree with their own testimony, let alone their colleagues'.
Pointing out all the inconsistencies and admitted misconduct and letting people slowly come to their own conclusions as the trial played out was fucking hard, I won't lie. I can be patient, but it doesn't come naturally to me.
But. Yelling about how this was obviously a bs case would have shut everyone down and made them stop listening. Asking questions and letting people discuss how the cops tried to make xyz sound suspicious but it was totally normal, or about how if things played out the way the cops said then logically events should have proceeded in a totally different direction, and positing different theories that actually lined up with the evidence presented?
That got people thinking, and everyone realized that for a variety of reasons we all had reasonable doubts that the defendent had committed any of the crimes of which he was accused.
Being able to raise reasonable doubt among a jury of one's peers saves lives. If you get the chance, take it.
"Jury Room / The Holdout" (1959) by Norman Rockwell. One of my favorites of his. Particularly the gendered dynamic he depicts here.
“What would it do to someone, to survive the Holocaust only to realize that the other side wasn't going to save you? To understand that you were as subhuman under the stars and stripes, or the hammer and sickle, as you had been under the swastika? That everyone else was going to the biggest celebration in the history of the world while you died of hunger because people found you uncomfortable to think about?” ― Gretchen Felker-Martin, Black Flame
Hey, did y'all see this?
I saw this when running newpipe. But wait, it gets deeper. I clicked on the details buttons and it said as of today, we have 83 days left until Google rolls out this new requirement for apps inside and outside of the google play store. If any developer disagrees with their new terms and fees, they will be blocked!
I'll share some of the info below:
Looks like they're trying to nuke the remaining privacy and freedoms we have left on the internet.
What to do?
-Get your developer friends to not comply to their new guides
- Sign the open letter on the site and take action by checking out the full resources list on their website as well!
To summarize, this is all daunting especially when you feel all alone with unfair and inhumane regulations comming out faster than improvements but we got this working together!
Share the link with your friends, family and anyone who will listen!

not to be a nerd but it’s so crazy how he (Bernini) really did that from cold hard stone……. truly a spectacle, truly breathtaking, an honor to behold
I think you should know he was 23 when he finished this and the ass gets a lot of attention but the hand on Persepina’s side/tummy is also exquisite
before i saw the caption I knew that HAD to be bernini.
I try not to make sweeping statements but I think there’s a case to be made for bernini as the greater sculptor there’s ever been.
here’s his bust of costanza bonarelli
here’s apollo and daphne from the front, where she’s mostly human
from the back, where she’s mostly tree
and details
this is the one art form I genuinely just cannot get my brain to accept as real. I’ve watched sped-up videos of it being done, read about it, seen in-progress marble statues and I still just can’t get it to sink in or stick. My mind doesn’t want to believe that any person has ever been able to start with a big block and break little bits off of it until it looks like a finely detailed person. At some point it has no recognizable shape and they still know where and how deep they should take a chip out of it that’ll still be the right decision 50,000 fucking chips later?!?
The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa has a hidden skylight for gold rays of actual light to shine down on their expressions and clothes and clouds.
Hi yes I have been there and seen all of these IRL and I have some more pictures to share:
Insanely detailed feet with veins from “Aeneas, Anchises, and Ascanius”
Another foot from the same statue because a) he textured underside of the foot and the folds of skin in the arch and b) can you see the light coming through the thin marble between the toes?
One of the mouths of Cerberus from “The Rape of Prosperina”.
Prosperina/Persephone’s facial expression and HAIR TEXTURE
Hades’ hair as well - this man was entirely too good at making CURLS out of ROCK.
A (poorly lit) close-up on the tree textures from “Apollo and Daphne”.
Hand, sling, and rock from “David” which I think deserves to be at LEAST as well-known as Michelangelo’s. Saw them two days apart and I prefer Bernini, honestly.
Facial expression from “David” - I just love the character in this so much.
Kind of a weird angle but look at the texturing on the sling pouch!!!
We also got to see one of Bernini’s earliest works (possibly his very first) in the Uffizi; it’s not currently on display, unfortunately, but look at this:
Forgive the poor photo quality but. He was 14 when he carved this. FOURTEEN.
Man was a straight-up wizard.
In conclusion: if you get the chance to visit the Borghese Gallery in Rome (which has the most Bernini sculptures gathered in one place), do it. The “Ecstasy of St. Theresa” is in a church a short walk away from there, too, and well worth a visit. There are also several more Berninis in churches around Rome which can be visited for free or for a nominal donation! Just… be smarter than we were and make sure you’re not trying to visit them on days they have services.
I agree, with a degree in art history, can’t wrap my brain around it either. It
’s definitely WIZARDRY.
The sign many left wingers have subconsciously accepted moving right on covid and embraced lowering public health standards is when people seem to think “masks should be mandatory in healthcare settings /airplanes “ is somehow a radical position to take in an ongoing pandemic
its so fucking weird because "masks in healthcare" should be the default all of the time. Doctors and nurses are literally employed to go from sick person to sick person, treating immunocompromised people especially often.
It should have been mandatory BEFORE covid
Also, current wait times to see doctors are pretty bad (at least in America, cannot speak to there rest of the world though I've heard it's bad all around) and a doctor getting sick means dozens of patients have to have their appointments moved, some now needing to wait months longer for critical care, so doctors should be required to wear masks when they're working so they have a lower chance of getting sick and fucking over their patients especially the ones who routinely interact with actively sick people.
Impressed with the levels of cope on display from people still trying to draw a strict line between porn and "erotica" in 2026.
"It's not porn! It has a plot and characters with dreams and personalities and relationships in addition to all the sex!"
Yeah, the same is true of most of the big name hentai games in general.
It's all porn. Embrace it without shame.
watching massive franchises bomb at the box office while Backrooms has made $212 million on a $10 million initial budget has brought me hope for the future of cinema
audiences do NOT want Star Wars slop, audiences want a movie made by a guy who really wanted to make a movie

Did you know there's a gap in my baseboards? I sure didn't!
Fortunately she's easy to lure out, because hers is the greed described in the bible. She knows her name but the problem is that verbal recall is never, ever going to be as valuable as a warm, humid hole (because ofc the dishwasher was going when this happened), so I had to lure her gluttonous ass out with a reptilink.
Anyways, I'm stopping at the dollar store for a pool noodle after work because this hole needs filling and I would prefer to be the one to fill it- not the damn lizard.
THWARTED! I have THWARTED her nefarious plan of going back in the hole!!
always doing something annoying
can I be honest? I was so pissed off by friends and family criticizing my soap choice that, for half a year, I did an experiment where I washed one hand with Palmolive and one with handsoap, to prove that it didn't make your skin any rougher. and do you know what the result is? it does make your skin rougher. and now I'm even more pissed off.
b just wear the seatbelt
Mmmmmmm
I gotta naysay here. Seatbelts do a LOT of harm. Not everyone can wear one and not everyone wants to risk it. Just among my own friends and people I know in general; 4 females had a breast cut completely or partially off due to a seat belt. 6 people had their throats cut, to an obviously non-lethal degree. 2 had their stomach’s cut open to a horrifying degree that I won’t elaborate on.
Not even counting the uncomfortably awkward belt locations for particularly large, small, fat, skinny people. Females with large breasts get the joy of holding the belt in place or adjusting it every couple seconds.
They’re awkward, uncomfortable, painful, and can often cause the injuries in an accident. Sometimes it’s just better to forgo the belt.
Those injuries caused by seat belts more than very likely would have been deadly had they not been wearing them. To have enough force to cut skin or cut off a breast in an accident is far more than enough to cause someone to go flying through the windshield of a car, to slam them into the steering column, or through a window resulting in deadly injuries or causing an even bigger accident for other drivers now that your body is in the road along with your crashed car. Are you really going to risk being a smear of ground meat on the pavement because your seat belt was a little uncomfortable or it might cut you? Then I got good news for you, there’s a wide variety of devices made specifically to make seat belts more comfortable and reduce that risk.
These make it so that your seat belt won’t cut your neck, a simple sleeve of padded fabric that velcros around it, meaning you can put it anywhere on the belt.
This one does something similar, by readjusting the positioning of the seat belt to move it farther away from your neck and hey, helps a bit with having boobs in the way.
They even make ones for children too.
Boobs still in the way? While it’s pretty silly looking, this helps keep the seat belt in place so you don’t have to keep adjusting it.
And if you’re overweight, they make seat belt extenders so you can still be safe.
But maybe you’re still unsure, then listen to the CDC and all of their sources.
“More than half of the people killed in car crashes were not restrained at the time of the crash.1 Wearing a seat belt is the most effective way to prevent death and serious injury in a crash.Seat belt use is on the rise. Laws, education, and technology have increased seat belt use from 11% in 19812 to nearly 85% in 20103, saving hundreds of thousands of lives. “
“Most drivers and passengers killed in crashes are unrestrained. 53% of drivers and passengers killed in car crashes in 2009 were not wearing restraints.1Seat belts dramatically reduce risk of death and serious injury. Among drivers and front-seat passengers, seat belts reduce the risk of death by 45%, and cut the risk of serious injury by 50%.4Seat belts prevent drivers and passengers from being ejected during a crash. People not wearing a seat belt are 30 times more likely to be ejected from a vehicle during a crash. More than 3 out of 4 people who are ejected during a fatal crash die from their injuries.5Seat belts save thousands of lives each year, and increasing use would save thousands more. Seat belts saved almost 13,000 lives in 2009. If all drivers and passengers had worn seat belts that year, almost 4,000 more people would be alive today”
Or this one
“ The number of those who escaped injury [by wearing a seat belt] increased by 40% and those with mild and moderate injuries decreased by 35% after seatbelt legislation. There was a significant reduction in soft tissue injuries to the head. Only whiplash injuries to the neck showed a significant increase.”
Or this
“ Fifty-five percent of those killed in passenger vehicle occupant crashes in 2008 were not wearing a seat belt…”
“Wearing a seat belt reduces the risk of fatal injury by almost 50%. For children, the risk of fatal injury is reduced by 71% with the use of child safety seats.“
“Of those thrown completely out of a vehicle in a car crash, 75% died. Only one percent of people totally ejected from their cars had on a seat belt during the crash. Over 30% were not wearing seat belts.“
Conclusion? Wear your fucking seat belt. Tell your kids to wear their fucking seat belt. Tell your friends and family to wear their fucking seat belts. Time and time again it’s been proven that you are significantly more likely to survive a crash if you’re wearing one. Most people think they’re uncomfortable, but when you’re in a crash it can save your life. I’d rather be mildly injured than dead.
Wear your seat belt.
2017 and people are still trying to spread the myth that you don’t need to wear a seatbelt.
People really don’t wear a seatbelt????
This reminds me of a story from WW1
When they first introduced Helmets to the troops fighting in trenches the number of head injuries suddenly skyrocketed and people wanted to take the helmets away again.
Until they realized that the reason for this was the fact that most of these head injuries would have been fatal if it wasn’t for the Helmets.
You always need to look at the bigger picture.
Do not forget about survivorship bias. The only reason those people are here to complain about seatbelts is because those seatbelts kept them alive in the first place. Always, ALWAYS wear your seatbelt.
WEAR YOUR DAMNED SEATBELT
It drives me nuts, personally, that all of the adults who insisted that I wear a seatbelt as a child Now as adults refuse to wear seatbelts themselves. Now I have to sit there and play the grown up to people 30 plus years older than me insisting they put their seatbelt on every time I’m the driver. I just took a road trip with my parents, and literally it was every single time we got in the car I had to tell them (My mom in particular, who kept randomly just taking her seatbelt off while we were zooming down I-95 and made a big face every time I told her to put it back on - you’d think after a while she’d figure out that she could not do it secretly, because I have a newer car and the moment a passenger takes their seat belt off while the car is moving it starts screaming at you until the person puts their seatbelt back on).
Why are people like this? Le sigh.
I’ve been in two car accidents where the car I was in was completely totaled. My sum total of injuries was a friction burn in the second accident because my arm was on the rubbery plastic arm rest on the passenger side door.
One involved us skidding on ice, rolling over, and hitting a frozen pond hard enough to crack the ice and start to sink.
The other involved us getting T-boned because a lady blew right through a stop sign at top speed.
In the first one, the only one injured was the family dog, who couldn’t wear a seat belt and was thrown out the back window. My mother, siblings, and I were all wearing seatbelts.
In the second, my mother suffered several broken ribs and brusing to her arm, hip, and neck. Her husband behind her was okay.
We were all wearing seatbelts.
I hate riding in cars and refused to go on school trips as a small child because the school buses didn’t have seatbelts.
Had somebody NOT been wearing a seatbelt during the first crash, they would’ve been thrown against the ceiling and the side windows.
Had my mother not been wearing a seatbelt during the second crash, she would’ve been thrown across the car and into me.
Had her husband not been wearing a seatbelt during the second crash he would’ve been thrown across the car and into the window.
Seatbelts are not just for your protection. They’re there for the protection of other people in the car and in the environment around you so that you don’t become a couple dozen pounds worth of high velocity meat missile.
For anyone who’s thinking, “But what if I have the kind of accident where I have to get out of the car, and my seatbelt gets stuck?”
That is why I have one of these attached to my rearview mirror:
It’s called a Resqme, a combination window-breaker and seatbelt-cutter.
I haven’t had to use it, but apparently it does work:
(Apparently it might not work on the laminated glass of a Tesla car, but that is yet another reason not to have a Tesla.)
“In the first one, the only one injured was the family dog, who couldn’t wear a seat belt and was thrown out the back window. My mother, siblings, and I were all wearing seatbelts.”
When I was going in to the hospital for one of my pre surgery appointments, I shared an elevator with a guy in a motorized wheelchair with a massive neck brace who made a point of telling us to wear seatbelts. He had stopped while driving home to talk to a friend, and then decided he didn’t need to put his seatbelt back on for the last two blocks to his house. He got hit by a drunk driver and broke his spine when he was thrown out of his seat. Docs said it probably would have only been pulled muscles and bruises if he’d had his seatbelt on. Wear your damn seatbelts.

Wild how there are lgbtq+ people on here who hold the same opinions on queer culture as the average homophobic transphobic straight person, just that they've reasoned themselves into them from the opposite way around.
You don't like drag. You don't like bisexuals. You don't like asexuals. You're suspicious of queer & trans people who you think have too easy. You don't like pride parades. You don't like people with genders you don't understand. You don't like it when people fall outside of the sex binary. You're suspicious of any queer people who are not part of your friend group. You fear-monger about "men invading women's spaces" and people pretending to be queer for clout.
Do you have any views that you don't share with the average cis straight terf? Besides being against whatever happens to negatively affect you personally?

Here's the thing about homeschooling that I think non-homeschooled kids don't and can't understand. You can have the best parents on the planet with the best intentions on the planet and homeschool will still seriously fuck you up. There is no way to do it ethically. I know because I basically had the best possible homeschooling experience.
My parents pulled me for the fourth grade, and I was homeschooled until the end of high school. Nine entire years. They pulled me from the public schools for a perfectly reasonable reason — my mental health was in the toilet and I needed to be away from other kids who might hurt me as they had spent all of my third grade year doing. My mom has a fucking PhD in neuroscience and tutors math professionally. She was, during the ten years that my siblings and I were homeschooled, the best, kindest, most caring, understanding, lovely teacher you could ask for.
But I'm still broken. That's the thing about homeschool. You can have the best experience possible in homeschool and still come out a fundamentally broken person. My social development stopped at the age of 10. I'm a 22 year old adult woman with the social skills of a 10 year old. That's not to say that that COULDN'T have happened in public school, but being homeschooled only made it more of a certainty. Both of my siblings and I have fewer coping strategies on average than our peers with similar neurodivergencies because we basically did not live in the real world for a decade during key developmental years.
Don't ban homeschooling because of the religious nuts. There are plenty of them. Hell, I KNEW plenty of them. But there are also plenty of quote unquote "good" homeschool families. Ones that do everything you would hope the model homeschool family does. And they are still hurting their children, even if unintentionally, because homeschooling is an inhrently traumatic experience. It's isolating. For seven entire years of my life, I had no friends. Not because I was a social outcast, but because I didn't even SEE anybody regularly enough. But, nonetheless, I knew people. You generally do if you get involved in the community.
Ban homeschooling because it breaks and utterly destroys everyone who goes through it.
Everyone.
I'm sorry, Lauren. I'm sorry, Kade. I'm sorry to the boy whose name I can no longer remember. I'm sorry that I survived and you didn't.
Homeschooling was probably the best possible way for me to get educated, given my particularly blend of neurodivergence: It still messed me up terribly bad, and I was one of the luckiest ones. For most kids it was far, far worse.
I agree 100%
For me, getting homeschooled right after 4th grade was because 1) I got constantly sick to the point of missing too much school anyway, 2) this school had mean as hell teachers and 3) I just hated it. It was torture to me. I hated everything about it and still look back on it as 100% pure misery. I was honestly shocked to hear that some kids don't mind or even actually like school.
And I had a great time. I love that I skipped years and years more of child prison and I'm sure I'd have been one of the ostracized kids if I'd gone to high school, I was just too awkward and odd. Terrible adhd. Everyone there would have hated me.
Anyway I think homeschooling should be banned but public schooling should only take half as much time out of a kid's life and de-emphasize the "baby cubicle farm" "sit and listen" approach.
I cannot emphasize enough how exactly accurate this is to working in production
