The Best Ever Death Metal Band (piano version)- The Mountain Goats
Iâve never heard this song performed on piano and itâs a special thing.
The introduction is really powerful and it is reminiscent of the novella John later wrote, Master of Reality in which the main character has been forcibly put into a mental institution because of their obsession with death metal.
I definitely was crying before the song even started.
Hail Satan!
This version makes me cry every sinfglwefnsdfbnvarsdbrbsdvdcc
When Ultraman isnât fighting bad guys, heâs also got a softer side, willing to stand guard over some of the littlest, furriest ones on the planet and protect them as they grow up.

The Revisit: Pee-Weeâs Big Adventure
In recent years, I have come to realize that I am a bit of a secret goth. Iâm not sure why it took so long to figure this out, considering how obsessed I once was with Tim Burton. But this initial feature from Burton, while beloved by so many, is not exactly what you would call quintessential Burton. This is Tim Burton before the quirks and specifics of his trademark style were set in stone. Before he became the patron saint of Hot Topic.
Certainly there is a weird darkness to Pee-Weeâs Big Adventure that feels very much like Tim Burton, but for the most part, this film is much more Pee-Wee Herman than Tim Burton. And I experienced it similarly. While Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas were films I watched several times over when I was a âcomplicatedâ Film-loving teen, I have probably seen Pee-Weeâs Big Adventure the most out of all of Burtonâs films. As a child, I had a VHS copy that had been recorded off of television, and I absolutely wore that tape out.

The Revisit: Burn To Shine Volume 3: Portland, OR 06.15.2005
The Burn To Shine series is a really great idea. Unfortunately, I feel like not many people are aware that the series even exists, possibly because of the scattershot release schedule and general lack of information.
The novel idea behind Burn To Shine is to document a moment in the musical landscape of a city in a unique and beautiful way. Ex-Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty and filmmaker Christoph Green are the minds behind the project. In each city, they select a curator, who picks a list of their favorite local bands. Then they find a house that is scheduled for demolition and have each band come in over the course of a day and play a single song in the house.Â
The Revisit: The Exterminating Angel
This is probably Luis Bunuelâs most famous film. Itâs my personal favorite and the only one of his works that I own. If you havenât actually seen this before, youâve likely had the plot described to you by someone, or have heard a reference to it in some other item of pop culture. Itâs been referenced in everything from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Midnight in Paris.
The Revisit: Mutual Appreciation
This was a nice accidental discovery. K stumbled across this movie in a sale bin when Blockbuster was going out of business. She thought the cover looked interesting, read the back and decided to take a chance on it. For like two bucks or whatever, why not?
The Revisit: Robin Hood: Men In Tights
This is where we end things with Mel Brooks. Sure, he has a few more films left in his body of work after this, but thankfully I donât own them. I only own this one because it was part of the Mel Brooks Boxed Set and Iâm only watching it because I set up this arbitrary rule for myself to rewatch EVERY movie I own.
The Revisit: Spaceballs
Obviously Iâm a fan of Mel Brooksâ work. Iâm also a huge Star Wars fan. Which is why it pains me to admit that this isnât a very good film.
This movie is ostensibly a Star Wars parody, but mostly itâs just a bunch of juvenile jokes barely held together by the loosest of plots. The title should be an instant giveaway as far as that goes. Youâve got the villainous Spaceballs, Storm Trooper looking guys with absurd spherical helmets. Then youâve got Barf, the Chewbacca-ish character. Heâs a mog (or mawg, Iâve seen it spelled both ways), a half-man/half-dog hybrid. Barf isnât really a reference to anything. just a funny word. Also, you meet some of the Spaceballs soldiers, specifically a family group all with the name Asshole. Again, without any explanation or payoff. Itâs just funny to make some people be named Asshole. Brooks also plays a Yoda parody called Yogurt, and Rick Moranis plays a Darth Vader parody called Dark Helmet. These arenât entirely clever names.

Apple's new Frankenstein Christmas commercial definitely just made me cry.
The Revisit: To Be Or Not To Be (1942 & 1983)
Okay, letâs take a brief break from films directed by Mel Brooks. If it isnât clear by now, Iâve been going through Brooksâ work primarily as collected in the Mel Brooks boxed set. Included along with most of his work as a director, there is the 1983 remake of the 1942 Ernst Lubitsch classic To Be Or Not To Be. Brooks did not direct this particular feature, though he does star in it alongside his real-life wife Anne Bancroft. I also happen to own the original Lubitsch version, so I figured watching them and writing about them together made the most sense.

The Revisit: History of the World Part 1
So, hereâs where Brooksâ career starts to go downhill. Donât get me wrong, this movie still has its moments, but there is a sharp decline from High Anxiety to this one.
First of all, this film doesnât follow a single narrative like all of Brooksâ previous work. Instead, it jumps from one short to another, looking at various points throughout history. With Brooksâ loose, scattered style of joke writing, he really benefits from having things tied together at least by a single storyline. So this movie really feels like a mess. There are gags that donât seem to mean anything and do really go anywhere. Because of this, most of the best bits come from the two longest segments, one on the Roman Empire and one on the French Revolution.

The Revisit: High Anxiety
So, I was mistaken. I was thinking that it was all downhill after Young Frankenstein, but I forgot just how great this film is. This one really is right up there with Blazing Saddles. I think I actually enjoyed it more.
The Revisit: Young Frankenstein
If The Producers is critically considered Mel Brooksâ best film and Blazing Saddles is his most popular film, I have to say that Young Frankenstein is my favorite. I really have no data to back up my feeling that The Producers is the most acclaimed and Blazing Saddles is the most popular, but there is no question that these three films make up Brooksâ greatest work. He made some good films after this, but never would he be quite as perfect as he was in these three.
