previously, tony’s depression and anxiety drove him to be reckless - but with a smile on his face (i.e. racing in monaco, throwing his huge birthday party). here, it’s like he’s testing himself to see how long he can sit there before replacing his reactor. letting the pain and fear course through him until it’s so deafening that only rhodey entering the room can snap him out of it.

This scene is about pulling back the curtain on all the reckless shit he’s been doing. The reckless shit he will continue to do.

He’s dying.

And he knows it.

And at this point, he’s given up hope.

And this dazed expression? The collapse that comes afterward?

It’s not just the palladium core needing replacement. He’s displaying multiple symptoms of his poisoning here. It’s all out on display because he was alone and in private.

And another symptom of the poisoning and the fear and the depression Tony is fully struggling with here in this moment is how dazed he is that he takes so long to shore his defenses back up and start making excuses to Rhodey.

To go back to hiding it.

Because his whole plan in this movie is to make everyone who cares about him hate him, so they won’t be hurt when he’s gone.
