Captain Shirogane was pacing the floor of the conference room.
Though it had been nearly a half-varga since the others had called an end to the briefing, he had stayed behind to collect his thoughts about the situation at hand and, apparently, check “run a hole into the floorboards” off his bucket list.
This is how you found him as you approached the room: Alone, with his arms crossed, brows furrowed, and a deep frown on his lips– something you noticed to be more frequent with him recently.
At that, an idea you’d been nurturing for a while now cemented itself and pushed you to enter fully into the meeting room.
“Sir!” You made your presence known, and saluted your captain. He, taken by surprise at your sudden outburst, paused in his pacing and turned to greet you.
“Y/n, there’s no need to be so formal,” The man says amusedly and steps closer to make the distance a little less awkward for the conversation’s sake, “Please, just Shiro is fine. How many times do I need to ask you?” Though strained from his initial thoughts, his voice was soft and teasing.
“At least once more, Sir,” You tried to keep yourself steady and not to look as winded as his smile made you feel, then continued quietly, “As always.”
He felt something jerk in his chest. You had always been polite and you were very adamant about making sure you were as respectful as you could be. Lately, however, and for some silly reason, he’s felt as if your words belied something deeper than what he first thought them to be. A few times had he accidentally caught your eye, and each of those times he noticed an emotion he couldn’t quite place swimming behind your gaze.
Those occasions, brief as they were, never failed to mystify him. But just as quickly had he seen these emotions, they were snuffed out and replaced with the same composed readiness he would see with any other recruit.
After a couple of moments of you continuing to stand at attention, he dejectedly sighs an ‘At Ease’ and waits for you to continue with whatever you came to inform him of.
At the words, your stiff posture relaxes and you return your arms to rest behind your back.
A few seconds pass in awkward silence.
You.. you had to do this before you lost your nerve.
How long have you been standing there staring at him?
You open your mouth to speak, but the words tangle together on your tongue before you could say them. So you clear your throat once, then twice, and try again, surer this time. “Permission, Captain, to do something stupid?”
He was struck with confused amusement for a moment and took a second to study you, deciding whether or not to humor you and your unusual request. And after what felt like an eternity (see: one minute), he gave in and replied with a cautious, “You may.”
You nodded gingerly and began to make your way closer to him, nearly shaking with each step. What you were about to do could get you into a whole world of trouble if things didn't go right. And that, coupled with the fact that you were now standing so close to him you could see the subtle shift of his eyes as they flickered back and forth between your own– you were surprised you hadn't melted into a puddle where you stood.
It was now or never.
Before you could break your resolve, you lurched forward and enveloped him in a hug. As sturdy and as comforting as you could, you wind your arms around his midsection and held him, hiding your face in his chest.
You felt him release a long, tired breath, and the deep vibrations ripple through his chest where you rested your head and ricochet through you. His soft baritone warmed you down to your toes.
“Y/n, what are you doing?”
You wound your arms around his midsection a little bit tighter, a little more snug, and took a deep breath in, trying to steady yourself, “Something stupid.”
The soft, earthy scent of his cologne did wonders to distract you from the situation you had made. You unconsciously press your face deeper into his chest, chasing the scent when you realized just what you were doing and stopped yourself from going any further.
A few seconds passed with nothing but silence–you standing in awkward anticipation for his reaction to your oh-so grand idea. And you began your mental spiral because oh gosh, oh Gosh, THIS WAS A TERRIBLE IDEA-
“Please do not forget,” his words snapped you back to reality, and you’re eyes met as you chanced a peek up to his face, “We are in a fairly popular conference room of the Galaxy Garrison– the highest distinguished aerospace sector in the country, maybe even the world-”
You felt something in you shatter at that and began to lower your arms from him in embarrassment and dejection.
“Needless to say,” he released a sigh again, then began to wrap his arms around your shoulders cradling you to himself as he relaxed into the embrace, “This behavior is very, very inappropriate.”
What he was saying would have –should have– on any other occasion, made you come to your senses and immediately apologize for your actions. Yet the feeling of his voice, smooth like velvet, and the warm embrace of his smile wrapping around each word he spoke lulled you to fall deeper into him.
Isn’t this backwards? Wasn’t this whole idea to get him to relax?
And yet here you were, being held and swayed, nearly falling asleep on your feet in the middle of this empty conference room.
And yet, you realized as he gently rubbed your back, you couldn’t care any less.

The endearing thing he loves about you is that you always are open to talk. Even at 2 am with bleary eyes, you still will let him talk and listen to what he has on his mind. As captain, his mind rambled a lot. You helped with this issue.

Shiro fell for you when you helped him through a nightmare. It was soon after the whole clone fiasco. He woke up in pain and tears. He went outside to be able to breathe easier. You were out there just to relax and once you saw him, you immediately went to helping him. He keeps that memory close to his heart.

It's usually full and happy. You can tell it is like he laughs with his chest and his head throws back. He sounds so happy and relaxed.

His hands are always on your waist. It is a way for him to know you are close but also lets him protect you.
Your hands are usually in his jacket pocket or grabbing his shirt. It is a way for you to know that he is close as well.

He is insecure that he gets too overprotective especially after the incident. He worries that you'll give up on him or become upset with how glued he is to your side.
You are insecure that you aren't enough. Shiro is a captain of the Defenders. You are just some person he fell for. Are you really enough for him?

A little. Like I said, he can be overprotective which his jealousy slips out. It usually means he is holding you tighter against his side and acting like nothing happened. But once the person leaves, he is kissing you longer than usual

He loves seeing you in his tshirt just waking up beside him. It reminds him you are still here. And you have something of his on.

He's an early bird. Sorry to say. As long as he doesn't have nightmares the night before, he's up early. But he does not wake you up. He let's you sleep and leaves a good morning sticky note by your side of the bed. He'll also kiss your temple before leaving.

Just hearing him talk through his nightmares and letting him know you are here helps a ton. He likes to know that you are still by his side and you are willing to hear him. Afterwards, he will fall asleep holding you against him with his face in the crook of your neck.
O: Overtook (First impression)
You were added to the team quite later on down the road. You were actually a good friend of Keith's and you just happened to join. Shiro was amazed at how well you got along with Keith and how kind you were to help each team member.

He knows generally when your periods are. He knows about what time (beginning, middle, or end of month) and when you will start to have mood swings or changes. He is pretty prepared for it. He has a stock of products and a heating pad ready then he'll get your favorite food.

Warm. It feels like home when you two are together. As cliche as it sounds, it is like the puzzle is complete. He makes you feel like you are strong and complete with him.

Like I said before, it was when you helped him with his nightmare. Another favorite memory though is when you planned a surprise date at a fair where you two could play games and ride rides together. It was the best day for the both of you.

He's the most understanding out of the big three. He's probably more mature than the others which makes sense to how he is understanding. He knows when you feel bad or are touch starved and doesn't respond badly to it.

Strawberries and Cream. He associates this with your favorite candle you always light in your room to relax. It always smells like strawberry shortcake and it is a light scent that also sticks to you.

Also like I said before but letting him talk. This could be something absolutely random like favorite game he found or a new recipe to try. But it could also be talking about the next mission. He wants that feedback from you as it makes him feel like you are with him through everything.

Him: "Good morning love. I hope you woke up rested. I set out a towel for you if you need to take a shower"
You: "Hey love. I hope you are working your hardest. But try to not overwork the others alright?"

Home. You bring him this comfort he didn't realize was missing. He loves being by your side and having you through everything. He loves that you support him as much as he supports you.

Malachite. The meaning of malachite is protection from outside world, protection from negativity, and strength. Shiro sees that in you. Even though you are a kind soul, you are willing to help Shiro get though the outside world and give him strength.
It’s pretty obvious that all of the paladins + Allura speak different languages. So I was wonder what it would be like that their s/o speaks their language but struggles with the English language. (I like the concept of how people say that Keith is Korean) S/o tries to converse with the other paladins in English. (I hope I explained this clearly >_
ah yes, i definitely love this headcanon idea!!! i swear y'all are super duper creative and it gives me so many things to try and work through whenever i have writer's block... 🥺 also just a heads up for this one, i only wrote for shiro, keith, and lance, because from what i know hunk and pidge don't really speak other languages despite coming from diverse cultural backgrounds. if any of you guys have any information on either of these characters concerning the topic of this request please do feel free to let me know!!

☆ i headcanon that he was born and raised on the west coast, but he definitely spoke japanese growing up and is still pretty much fluent. he only really needs these skills when conversing with members of other bases over seas, since he finds there aren't many other native japanese speakers at the US garrison base
☆ however when he found his s/o, someone who was also fluent in japanese, he was actually kind of excited! he doesn't have a ton of opportunities to speak the language he grew up speaking, so this was perfect for him!
☆ as someone who taught at the garrison, he has a natural teacher's touch, and is more than happy to help his s/o better their english skills. whenever they speak to him in english, he kind of lets any grammatical errors slip, because he's kind like that, but sometimes he likes to make charts of verb and noun endings and conjugations just to help them out a bit <3
☆ okay but imagine him getting completely caught off guard by watching his s/o argue with another student during a cafeteria incident and it kind of??? made him fall even more in love with them??? they always came off as shy to him but seeing them stand their ground and converse in a language they sometimes still struggle with was INCREDIBLE to him. helpful space dad is also a proud space dad

☆ he grew up speaking both spanish and english at the same time. his whole family are native spanish speakers who grew to be fluent in english over time, but he and his siblings were the first generation in his family to learn both languages at once
☆ it was funny for lance meeting his fellow spanish speaking s/o, since sometimes he tends to slip into spanish on accident when speaking with a teacher or friend. but when he's with his s/o he doesn't have to worry, maybe the other way around, but he knows they can still understand him and talk with him when he speaks in english
☆ he's kind of...an absentminded teacher tbh. he so desperately wants to help his s/o become more confident with their english skills, but he tends to completely gravitate towards new topics, all in spanish as well.

☆ he'd...probably struggle most in this kind of situation tbh. his father taught him both korean and japanese growing up, but over time he kind of just stuck with english. his language skills didn't completely drain away, however, and now it's just easier for him to understand those languages than it is for him to speak it
☆ so he and his s/o are kind of in the same boat together, which makes him feel a lot more relaxed. like the two of them can learn together. it makes him feel a lot less lonely.
☆ he can understand what they say if they speak in japanese or korean, and he hopes they can understand his responses in english, since he's shy and a bit insecure about his japanese and korean skills. one time the two of them were talking about something that happened during a mission and it completely derailed into a conversation about flying squirrels. keith has never laughed so hard in his entire life.
☆ but yes, like i said, this gives lil grumpy boy something that he can relate to! which takes a lot of weight off of his shoulders! he can often be a bit nitpicky about grammar but as long as his s/o is learning he is happy as can be.
