Episode 22 of @legendlarkpod 's NeverNowhere campaign gave us so many clues about Peppers mysterious backstory it inspired a relisten. I wanted to compile some of the clues we've gotten so far, what I think they mean, and make some predictions.
• Kat knew that Pepper would not want to go into the fortune tellers tent. That means it is fundamental to Peppers backstory or personality that she doesn't want to know her future or, more likely her past. We consistently see her throughout the show being flippant about her memories, perhaps wanting to forget something.
• She pulled the following cards for her past:
1.) The Fool Reversed: Went on a journey that may have been a mistake when someone she trusted took advantage of that trust. I think the obvious journey this refers to is getting in the box cars.
2.) The Lovers: Someone who was CONSTANT. I see what you did, Kat. Well done.
3.) The Tower: Being taken down a peg. I'll talk about this more later in the post.
• Nod mentions that some of the residents of the train are okay with the people in the box cars paying the fares without knowing it. I'll mention this more later.
• Don't Trust Her. This most likely refers to Constance, the person who most likely took advantage of Peppers innocence and convinced her to go on her journey.
• "Five hundred seasons and still I’m the fool. Who covets the bygone and mourns for the hewn. In other worlds, maybe, we fought and we stayed, Here, only shadows and stains"
• I'm think this is a clue but don't have a strong interpretation for it yet. Perhaps Constance convinced Pepper to get on the train to avoid some sort of fight, whether it was metaphorical or literal.
• "I associate them[magic users] with, like, politicians" We know that Pepper is a magic user, I think that this means she was some sort of royalty or politician - or at least maybe the daughter of one? This made the Tower card stand out to me more - if she was in some sort of political position she would have farther to fall. If she was a politician I'm gonna put my money on a Senator for no other reason than I know Noel loves Star Wars.
• "We're gonna die, So let's go together. We're gonna live, but you and I both know it won't be forever. It's not an omen it's not a sign, and if it were, would that make it better? I keep on telling you we've got time, but in the end it's still now or never." Pepper says she remembered this song, so she may have written it in her life before the train OR it's someone else's song. Constance, perhaps? My current theory is that this was the argument Constance gave to convince Pepper to get on the train.
• "That woman warned me about you" This means that at some point Constance has come into contact with the hero and went out of her way to "warn" them about Pepper. This could have happened in any cycle, but I wonder if it's relevant that the hero was less wary of her in Aphatrea. Maybe Constance is still on the train and went to the hero after the Sun Queen Caper to be like "yeah you shouldn't trust my ex she's wack". This would mean that Constance is still on the train, which would also explain why Pepper needs to remind herself not to trust her.
• We finally learn the name Constance, which I'm assuming is the name of the other person in Peppers Lovers card draw. The Lovers means partnership, and it doesn't necessarily need to be romantic, but my assumption is that this is Peppers ex girlfriend.
A lot of this is vibes based so I could be wrong. I'll likely add onto this post more as we get more information.
Pepper comes from a world where magic users are musicians who obtain political power through their music and magic. She was perhaps from a long line of these performers, and maybe this privileged life made her innocent and trusting. One day she met and quickly fell in love with a woman named Constance who convinced her to live an adventurous life on the train in the box cars. Not knowing the cost, Pepper agreed. Little did she know that Constance specifically targets vulnerable individuals to bring into the box cars to unknowingly pay the fares, either for entirely selfish reasons or because in some twisted way she thinks the ends justify the means to help the people of the train have to pay less fares.
My biggest question is whether Constance is in the box cars or in the train proper. I'm leaning towards the latter, but I think my theory works either way.
Anyways I'm obsessed with this campaign and cannot believe they managed to make characters just as lovable and hilarious and amazing as the Guardians. Thank you so much, Larks, for all the work that you do putting together this incredible podcast.
If you have any theories or evidence to add please please please share them with me I want to discuss this so bad but none of my friends love me enough to listen.
