context:

Sonic was cast out of Heaven centuries ago for pride and for his overall disobedience, refusing to obey the status quo. His punishment was to roam the Earth aimlessly for the rest of eternity. His angelic form was mangled and distorted when he fell, reshaped into what resembles a normal Earth hedgehog.

Over time, Sonic falls in love with the Earth and all the life on it. Instead of wandering without purpose, he chooses one for himself: he will become the Earth’s guardian. His wings were ripped off when he fell, and his halo was molded into shackles, a symbol that he is a prisoner, so he has to learn how to fight from scratch, like a mortal would. Every day, he wishes he had been born with a soul. He wishes he had been mortal. Angels are barely remembered in the modern world, but he doesn't want to risk being found out. He keeps his distance from society, spending most of his time in nature and watching from afar.

One day, he meets Shadow. Sonic is immediately fascinated by him, because Shadow has no soul link. Every mortal is supposed to have a soul-bound guardian angel, but Shadow doesn’t. Sonic has never seen that before. The reason is that Shadow is artificial. He believes he does not have a soul at all. Sonic isn’t sure that’s true.

Shadow is deeply depressed after losing his family. He feels like he has no purpose anymore, no reason to stay alive.

Sonic understands that feeling. He knows what it’s like to exist without belonging. So he makes a decision. Even if Shadow doesn’t have a soul, even if the rules say he shouldn’t have a guardian, Sonic chooses him. He decides to become Shadow’s guardian angel. Not because Heaven assigned him to it, but because Sonic chose to protect the Earth and everyone on it, including depressed artificially created hedgehogs. And he wants to help Shadow find a new purpose, the way he had to find his own.
