Merlin and Eggsy's first teacher conferences at the school. OR them sending their kid(s) off on their very first day.
I love both, but you know I had to go with the second! Thank you!
âItâs too soon!â Eggsy wept, ready to pull the twins back.
It was their first day of school, both eager and ready to run up the narrow drive to greet the teacher.
âHold it ye two.â Merlin placed a large hand on top of two, identical heads of curly brown hair. âPatience,â he reminded them.
Liam twisted against the restraint, ice blue eyes glared up his way, as Lola huffed, crossing her tiny arms like this was the biggest inconvenience. He shook his head fondly, if they werenât just like Eggsy and himself.
âPapaaa,â Lola whined. âWanna go!â
âYeah!â Liam agreed with his twin.
âDonât ye two want to say goodbye to Daddy?â As if his words were a catalyst, Eggsy started to sob. Big, fat tears rolled down his cheeks, like this was the end of the world. And maybe it was to his husband, but Merlin saw it as a bit of freedom.
Theyâd worked their arses off to give the kids all they didnât have and despite conversations that revolved around the twins in school, it appeared Eggsy still hadnât let go. It was hard, he knew that much, ever since they were born Merlin knew how much this little family meant to his husband, and him too, but it was time.
âTheyâre only going for half day, Eggsy.â Merlin whispered into his ear.
Eggsy waved his hands and squatted to face their little loves. âYouâre gonna be good, right?â Both little heads bobbed. âIâll miss you.â His lip wobbled as he scooped their bairn close.
Merlin might have snapped a few photos, he knew Eggsy would appreciate it, and broke the trio when a bell rang.
âWe canât let them be late on the first day, lad.â He coaxed Eggsy into a soft kiss, and took Liamâs hand as Eggsy took Lolaâs.
Together they brought them to their assigned class, making sure they were okay and didnât need them, before they left. Eventually Merlin had to drag an almost inconsolable Eggsy to the car.Â
âMy heart,â Merlin cooed. âThey will be okay.â He sealed his words with a firm kiss.
Eggsy hiccuped, still distraught, against the affection. âWhat if they get made fun of? Got two dads...no mum. What if the other kids are mean and pick on Lola because sheâs needs her pacy at nap time? What if Liam has an accident...â He trailed off, breaking down into a fit of wet, gulping cries that broke Merlin.
âOh, lad.â Merlin leaned over the shifter to hold Eggsy in an awkward embrace. âTheyâre in a room full of 3 and 4 year olds.â Not that he had a ton of experience, outside the twins and that said very little since they damn near killed one another on a daily basis, but he tried to comfort his husband anyway.
âKids are mean, Hamish! They could pull Lolaâs hair...eat Liamâs snack.â Eggsy dragged the back of his hand under his nose, causing Merlin to shudder.
âAye, they are, but luckily weâve done all we could to prepare them? Strong, tough willed wee things we have, aye?â Their babes fought for their lives from day one, surviving surrogacy, being born two months early, and still managed to excel and be the smartest little humans Merlin had ever seen. A biased opinion, to be sure, but they were just four and got into school with no problems.
Eggsy nodded at that, sniffling hard, and worked up enough to give Merlin a wet smile.
âThereâs my lad.â Merlin ran a hand through Eggsyâs hair. He gave him a sound kiss, returning to his seat proper, and started the car. âHow about breakfast and a bit of shopping? Ye can get outfits for the twins.â
His husbandâs face lit up like the sun and gave him a true, full faced grin that made his heart full.
