I finished Riders of the Purple Sage by Zane Grey! The story follows three characters, Jane Withersteen (a cattle rancher in Utah), Bern Venters (one of her hired hands), and Jim Lassiter (a gunfighter who has a mysterious reason for being in Utah). Each of their stories intertwine and are marked by their victimisation by a Mormon group who run the local town. Part Mystery and Part Western, this book took me a while to get into as the language is, understandably, a little archaic. For a book published in 1912, however, it’s surprisingly modern in some of its aspects. Primarily, the character of Jane Withersteen has a great deal of agency for a woman character written by a male author of the early 20th century. While she does spend a great deal of the book telling the gunfighter Lassiter to stop reaching for his pistols at every opportunity, this isn’t portrayed as a weakness, as some authors would. Instead it’s treated as, simply, a different way of dealing with the problems that they encounter. Lassiter is shown as a typical Western Cowboy but from a bygone era where violence was often the simplest solution and Withersteen has a more prudent approach to life. Neither side is shown to be completely right or completely wrong which shows a maturity in Grey’s writing. Venters acts as a go-between of the two sides and facilitates the uncovering of the grand scheme surrounding the three characters, concocted by the Mormon elders. The book is unashamedly anti-Mormon, often feeling like propaganda! Mormon women are portrayed as being subjugated by unscrupulous polygamists. And town elders are scheming villains who openly oppose Jane’s ownership of a ranch on the basis that she should accept her lot as a Mormon wife and stop associating with “gentiles” (I.e. non Mormons). Taken at face value it could simply be a case of a good story needing a dastardly villain, but the tonal switch when talking about Mormons made me feel like Grey had a bit of a hang-up about them!
