Unexpectedly Useful Verbs - Zambullirse
I should first preface this by saying that I have never seen zambullir without a reflexive attached to it, so I'm going to say that this is a rare "only reflexive" verb. If I'm wrong about that, please tell me.
The verb zambullirse has two meanings and they both involve the same general idea. The literal definition of zambullirse means "to dive" or "to plunge". This is because the word in its etymology is related to Latin sub meaning "under" and bullir which means "bubbles". So it means something like "to go under the bubbles/foam". As such la zambullida means "the dive" or "the plunge".
The second meaning is a bit more figurative and probably more common, being "to submerge oneself" or "to become engrossed/consumed by" something. It's synonymous with "to immerse" and "to submerge", and a very academic way of saying it.
In truth, it tends to be a bit idiomatic as se zambulle might mean "gets psyched up" or "goes ham (on something)". It tends to mean "to fully commit oneself" to something, so it's very good to use in the sense of dedication or extreme concentration.
*Language note: The sport of diving is known as el buceo and also works with SCUBA diving etc. Zambullir(se) "to dive" not "the act/sport of diving".
*Note: This verb exists in various incarnations because the ll sound gets corrupted into a simple i. All of these verbs are the same, though certain regions go for different spellings. I like to think of it like "color" and "colour" with English.
zambullir(se)
sabuir(se)
zabullir(se)
zabuir(se)
zambuir(se)
Either way the verbs are all regular -ir verbs except in the preterite where for the sake of pronunciation it turns to zambulló, zambulleron and then in imperfect subjunctive zambullera etc.
**Note: If you were to use zambuir it would have the same general sound in the preterite - zambuyó and zambuyeron; zambuyera etc. The LL and Y have the same sound but are written differently.
