While exploring Tumblr (OK, I was trying to find just one photo of Fringe that wasn't a Oliveter love story photo), I happened across a post that complained about people on Tumblr making it a contest to get the most likes and reblogs, and most importantly: People getting ahead in this mass contest by actually stealing other peoples' original artwork and re-uploading it with their own tags. 

I hate to point this out, but jacknuts are going to be doing that no matter where you put stuff up. There's even a way to download other people's YouTube videos, so you can edit them on your computer or upload them yourself.

There is, in fact, a way to make sure people know who originally made the artwork or video, but most people don't like it. It's called putting a watermark all over your stuff.

While that sounds like a bad idea, because a watermark kind of sucks, it's actually the most brilliant idea ever. No, really. Why, you ask?

Well because 1. There's no way you can edit out a ginormous watermark. Plus, it's translucent, so yeah it looks like crap but it really doesn't distract all that much if you do it right.

And more importantly, 2. Because then you can make people pay for getting your videos on DVD or your pictures in person, without the watermark. And once you're selling "real" stuff, you can keep track of who you sell to, and very easily sue anyone that uses your work. Win-win, yeah?
