It wasn’t until I was about 13 that I realized my identity wasn’t just Latino. I was also a #mixedchild. My dad is what some people from the Latin Community might refer to as a #Mulatto. This means that he is of #Black and #White mix. The black portion comes from slaves that were brought from West Africa to the #Caribbean to numerous islands including Puerto Rico. The white portion comes from #Spanish/ #Portuguese Heritage. My mom on the other hand is referred to as a #Mestizo. This means that she is of #European and #Indigenous decent. Being a Latino can be so confusing when your mixed with so many different things. As I was growing up I saw that some people in my family were black and some were white. Some were indigenous and some had all three. Because society mostly depicts Latinos as their own separate group. I want the world to know that yes, I am Latino but i’m still mixed. Being mixed allows me to dive into my roots and enjoy all the beautiful things that make me who I am. Im Latino but I also descend from the #Taino Tribe of the Caribbean. I’m Latino but I also descend from the #Yoruban people of Nigeria. I’m Latino but I also claim heritage to Spain and Portugal. It’s important for me to always know myself and where my people come from. It’s not about saying ONLY it’s about saying ALSO. I’m mixed and proud. No one can take that away from me. I identify as a #gay #nonbinary individual. I will be attending college in the fall where I want to study political science and history. I want to delve more into my roots and understand all my cultures and I want to work with the government to raise awareness for the mixed community. Pouring libations are the essential way to call the ancestors to you in almost all African Traditional Religions. The act of ceremoniously pouring water into the Earth calls the ancestors (referred to as Egun in Yoruban religion) to attend while also paying homage to them. Your first time pouring libations should not be to ask for something but rather to connect and give. Ask specifically for the ancestors to come with strength who will ALSO DO YOU WELL. Be specific. Consider that most African Americans are 5-30% Caucasian….this is due to rape and trauma as well as people trying to overcome this…not all in your bloodline might wish you well and indeed a few might even be coons, snitches, or just plain harmful. Do not invite any old ancestor into your life just because they had sex with or assaulted somebody. Some people are just plain bad people…not all skin folk are kin folk. ✨ Be patient with your ancestors. It may take time for both them to reach out to you AND for you to understand when you are being reached out to. ✨ When you pour the water it should be outside into the Earth. If you cannot be outside (say because of an indoor ceremony or gathering) pour the water into a bowl and then pour outside into nature as soon as you are able to later. 🌹🌿pics off of Google

When I was in Mexico conducting research, I had a conversation with colleagues about ancestry and was troubled by my ignorance. I had no clue where I came from. Consequently, I left the exchange feeling a void in my conscious and spirit. I stopped procrastinating and got around to completing a DNA test. The results indicate that I am primarily Yoruban, Senegalese, and Bantu, with 10% northwestern European DNA. I'm also a distant relative of Napoleon Bonaparte 😂. Those of us who are descendants of enslaved peoples were robbed of our roots. It is comforting to have a sense of closure. #Bantu #Yoruban #Senegalese #royaltyinsidemyDNA (at Newark, Delaware)
