Risshaku-ji, better known as Yamadera ("Mountain Temple"), is one of the most spectacular spiritual and scenic sites in northern Japan. It is located in Yamagata Prefecture, about one hour by train from Sendai, making it an ideal destination for a day trip.

The temple was founded in 860 AD by the monk Ennin, one of the most important figures of the Tendai school of Buddhism. The complex extends along the mountainside, with wooden temple buildings perched on rocky cliffs and surrounded by a forest of ancient cedar trees.

The site is especially famous for its 1,015 stone steps leading to the summit. According to tradition, each step represents a stage in freeing oneself from worldly desires. The climb takes about 30–40 minutes, with small temples, statues, and scenic viewpoints along the way.

One of the most impressive spots is Godaidō Hall, a small pavilion built on the edge of a cliff. From there, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the valley, the village of Yamadera, and the surrounding mountains. It is one of the most iconic landscapes in the Tōhoku region.

At the base of the mountain stands Konpon Chūdō, the temple's main hall. Inside burns a sacred flame that, according to tradition, has remained continuously lit since the temple was founded more than 1,100 years ago.

Yamadera is also closely associated with the famous poet Matsuo Bashō, who visited the temple during his 17th-century journey described in The Narrow Road to the Deep North. There he composed one of his most celebrated haiku:

"Such silence—

The cries of the cicadas

Sink into the rocks."
