âBut you canât make me go to that kind of a mission with a bunch of inexperienced kids!â Kibum exclaimed, fury blazing in hazel eyes.
The Shadowhunter looked up at Professor Im, the Principal of Koreaâs Institute. The older man remained as calm and composed as ever. Kibum only got even more worked up. âDo you want them to die maybe?"
âIt doesnât have to end in tragedy if you act like usually,â the principal said, lips parting in a subtle but so very there smile. âCome on, you doubt too much about yourself, Kibum. I am giving you this responsibility and task because you need to see for yourself that you c a n do it. Your Parabatai will stay here, and you will go and prove yourself. Donât make me punish you again, so go and do as you have been told. Your team is waiting for you at the entrance already.â
The principal pat Kibum on the back before he exited the room, his smile lost the moment he crossed the libraryâs door. In the mirror, Kibum looked at his reflection: the black leather gear catching some winter light from the window, the arrows on his back bright with the glow that blessed weapons carried. He also saw Myungsooâs eyes on him, and after a brief nod in his direction, he accepted todayâs fate.
With clammy hands and anxiety in his gut, Kibum roamed the dark alleys with the piece of fabric and fur that another team had gathered during their patrol. He told the trainees about the best ways to focus into tracking Downworlders with the help of the appropriate rune, but the closer they were getting to find the rogue pack, the more worried he became. If a werewolf bit any of the trainees, their life as they knew it would be over.
âWe can use the rune for Silence and Speed, but they can only do so much. The more runes you come to gather in your skins, the clearer your Shadowhunter scent will be,â he explained. âVampires and werewolves in particular have an excellent sense of smell, so you must act fast when packs of them are involved.â
He stopped when the flow of energy was disrupted and the tracking rune became stronger. Then he heard it: the whimper of a werewolf and the vicious roars and barks from others. âIf you donât want your lives to be over, I suggest you have all your senses on this battle. Donât get in the middle, understood?â he hissed at them as he took out his seraph blade. He named it âBarratielâ, and the other Shadowhunters followed his action on their own, uneasiness and excitement in their fresh faces.
Kibum moved with great speed towards the source of the howling. There were six of them reunited around a smaller werewolf, all of them toying with him as if he was their prey. He hadnât heard about anything like this in recent events, but since this pack was a group of rogues they had had troubles finding until this week, he could finally put some order. Without hesitation, he threw a dagger at one of the enormous wolves, aiming right in the middle of its head just before he finished the smaller wolf. The rest of the pack reunited immediately and bared their teeth at the Shadowhunter as he walked over them with a sure grip on his blade. âI would suggest you all to start running,â he told the wolves when he stood between them and the injured one.
