I really loved Serious Weakness and Low Kill Shelter, and they've really made me want to write again in a way I haven't in a while. I think the way both of them deal with violence/power differentials as something to live with and through was really interesting, but I've been trying to figure out why I was more satisfied with Low Kill Shelter than with Serious Weakness, even though Serious Weakness I think was more thorough and well-realized.
It might be that in Low Kill Shelter the reversal of power at the end is vs. a disease which is easy to reconcile living with because it's kind of a character but not in any way a person, it just influenced the personhood of "actual" people.
Whereas in Serious Weakness the reversal happens against a "full" person (and who gets to be considered "fully human" is a central question) and so you have to deal much more directly with Insul continuing to be the same person even when the power imbalance that has defined his character is upended.
I think Serious Weakness is a more radical story because it pushes acceptance of violence as an expression of care much further, but also has to work harder as a story to sell that idea.
In Low Kill Shelter, the disease doesn't have agency, it just changes the agency of the characters, but ultimately they're compromising with themselves which a reader is naturally primed to accept.
Anyway, it makes me want to construct a story where the main power imbalance/route to violence is one character coercing a second character into committing violence against the first character that the second character both wouldn't normally do and that they ultimately do desire to inflict in part because they resent the coercion to begin with.
