Staring up

At the night sky

Counting the stars

Swirling beyond the trees

My head beside yours

As our feet dangle in the water

I listen to you breathe

And I know Peace’s name

A night studded with jewels

A cool breeze skudding over the pool

The silence of knowing each other

Each dimple and twinkle and quirk

I know Peace’s name

If this were a movie

Or a book for teens

One of us would roll over

We would lock eyes

And drown in each other

The passion of years revealed

Under the watchful eye of the moon

Peace would give way to panting

Lips locking together

A fire burning between us

But this is not a YA fiction

This is hearts and pumping blood

And minds that love

But not in the way most would assume

The fire is not here

This poem means a lot to me, as it was the first one I wrote since coming to terms with my sexuality. I’m actually really nervous about posting so I hope it touches everyone who reads it as much as it touches me.

What is love, you say,

Without the burning passion?

What is love, you demand,

Without the flames licking your soul?

I will tell you.

Love is a gentle touch

When the world rages loud and bright.

Love is the whisper of bare feet

Dancing through the June grass.

Love is muffled giggles

And whispered fears at night.

Love is the silence when words feel safe

To disappear.

Love is clenched fists

And raised voices

That pause,

And look,

And realize

That love

Is facing the world together.

Love is clasped hands

That rise above the storm,

Aching and tired,

But still
