FOR MOST PEOPLE, THE SUNRISE is the beginning of their days. Most people have alarms set for the early morning, and they wake up and get ready for their day and head to work or whatever -- but not Jake. Most days, the sunrise is what alerts him that he has, yet again, forgotten to eat or sleep. The sun beams that pour through the shopโs windows fall upon his scarred face and he groans, rubbing the exhaustion from his eyes as he sits up.ย
He does his best to clean up around the shop -- hangs his tools and his apron back up, gives a half-assed attempt at sweeping up the mess heโs made, and then pulls on his coat as he stumbles out onto the busy main street to head to the cafe next door. Coffee seems to be the only thing that can turn him back into a person again after such a long night.ย
He pushes open the glass door, bells announcing his arrival, and settles into a stool at the bar. The waitress knows him by name, greets him, and leaves him with a fresh cup of coffee.ย
Jake is staring at the menu, debating whether or not he should eat something and let it make him sick or just continue to starve when someone slips into the seat next to him. Someone heโs never seen before. He eyes her suspiciously, turning away swiftly when he notices that sheโs been staring at him, too.ย
He isnโt the most outgoing these days.ย
ย ย ย โ... You must be new here.โ he says, without looking at her.ย
