A commercial food processing company has been ordered to pay $330,000 after one of its workers became trapped in a smokehouse and died. Ontario-based Sofina Foods Inc. was directed by a judge on Thursday to put the money toward a workplace training program.

Timmins police say they are investigating “an industrial workplace fatality” after a body was found.

The discovery was made at a scrap yard on Highway 101 West and Malette Lumber Road in Timmins.

When asked, police spokesperson Michelle St. Louis said in an email to CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca around noon Friday they received a call “not too long ago.”

“(The) investigation just started,” St. Louis said.

“I don’t have further details at the moment. I’ll be able to provide more details once we know more.”

“The Ministry of Labour has been notified and will be attending as part of the investigative process,” police said in a news release just before 2 p.m.

"An in-depth analysis of work-related deaths and injuries in Qatar by the International Labour Organization, has shown that 50 workers lost their lives in 2020 and just over 500 were severely injured, with 37,600 suffering mild to moderate injuries. Most were suffered by migrant workers from Bangladesh, India and Nepal, mainly in the construction industry. Falls from height and road traffic accidents were the top causes of severe injuries, followed by falling objects on worksites."

Its findings are based on data collected from all medical institutions that provide acute care for injured workers in the country. Publication of the report follows growing calls for greater transparency and accountability on work-related deaths in Qatar, particularly those relating to World Cup infrastructure projects."

"[The report] calls for better quality and more accurate data collection, with more efforts to investigate injuries and fatalities that may be work-related but are not currently categorized as such. This will ensure workers and their family members receive due compensation in case of occupational injuries. Such investigations should be carried out by medical professionals as well as by labour inspectors. The Ministry of Public Health should also set up a national integrated platform that pulls together timely and reliable occupational injury data, the report says."

Isabella County Man Killed at Workplace while Repairing Tire

The New South Wales Industrial Court has asked coal seam gas explorer Santos to pay $120,000 as fine following death of an employee. Bruce Austin, a contractor working as part of Eastern Star Gas exploration team, died at Pilliga in August 2009. Santos purchased Eastern Star Gas 26 months later.

The 57-year-old worker received fatal injuries when a pipeline hit him and he succumbed to the wounds. Santos admitted that lack of stringent safety measures as a reason for the accidental death. The court found the employer guilty of failing to foresee the potential risk of injury linked to the recoiling pipeline at the worksite.

$930k Compensation for Workplace Injury, Assault

A 41-year-old Canberra man injured at a construction job and assaulted by his supervisor on his return after recovery stands to get $930,000 in compensation. The ACT Supreme Court awarded him the compensation considering lost earnings during injury and back pain and agony caused by the assault.

The plaintiff had a disk injury following an accident at an Australian National University construction site in 2005. He was immobilized and struck in a bent over position when his co-worker tripped and the sheet of mesh they were carrying entrapped him. He got a disc injury that forced him to take rest for several months.

When he returned to work following recovery, his supervisor allotted him a task that had the potential to aggravate his back previous injury. On his refusal to carry on the task, he was assaulted – “pulled back by his hair and kneed in the groin”.
