There's a photograph sitting in the Library of Congress that almost wasn't saved. It's a nitrate negative — 35mm, small enough to hold between two fingers — and it shows something at an FSA camp in Sinton, Texas. The Farm Security Administration set up these camps across the country during the hard years, and this one in Sinton was no different: a place where migrant workers and displaced families could land, catch their breath, maybe buy something at the community store. The community store. That's what this photograph is *probably* about. The archivist who catalogued it hedged with that word — *possibly related to* — because nitrate negatives have a way of losing their context. The label falls off. The photographer's notes go missing. Decades pass. And suddenly you have an image of something that mattered enormously to the people in it, and nobody left alive to say exactly what it shows. Nitrate film is also, famously, a fire hazard. It's the reason so much early cinema is gone forever — film vaults burning, entire visual records of the early 20th century turning to chemical smoke. The fact that this negative survived 1942, survived the war years, survived the slow institutional forgetting that happens to everything eventually, is not nothing. Sinton sits in San Patricio County, south Texas brush country not far from Corpus Christi. In 1942, the FSA camp there would have been operating in a landscape shaped by cotton, citrus, and the constant churn of agricultural labor. The community store wasn't just a place to buy canned goods. In these camps, it was one of the few spaces where residents had some say — some camps ran their stores cooperatively, letting residents participate in the decisions. Whether Sinton's store worked that way, the archive doesn't say. The photograph doesn't say either, at least not to us. What we have is the negative. A ghost of light and silver. Someone stood somewhere in Sinton, Texas, in the winter of 1942, and decided this was worth photographing. That decision is the only thing we know for certain. The question worth sitting with: how many photographs in our own phones right now will end up just as mysterious to whoever finds them eighty years from now?
