I'm trying to preempt the inevitable "Our employees CHOSE to violate WRITTEN COMPANY POLICY by coming into work sick, it's THEIR FAULT the Corona virus is spreading so badly" bs we're going to be hearing from corporate spokespersons in the coming days by starting a new Twitter hashtag, #WorkingSick. I have basically no clout(?) on Twitter so any responses or boosting from folks on here would be appreciated.

If you have less dramatic stories of being coerced into working while sick you're welcome to share, but I'm hoping to primarily get people talking about the cases where employees experienced severe yet completely avoidable health consequences as a result of not taking time off work. Such cases are less likely to be dismissed as just workers voluntarily violating company policy.

Because our employers won't hire/schedule enough people to cover call-offs.

Because our employers won't give us paid sick leave so we don't have to choose between possibly infecting other people or definitely not paying our bills.

Because our employers will fire us for missing work regardless of the reasons because it means we're "unreliable" and "not committed."

In Germany an employee is on sick leave for an average of 15-18 days per year, some studies say. I know that the numbers are way lower in other countries. But I don't know what to do about it. When I'm working while sick I'm not only coughing, sneezing, spreading my bacteria and viruses in my own office space, which I share with three other coworkers, but also in the whole office (hallway, kitchen, bathroom...), field service and public transportation.

The deaths, and the coronavirus outbreak, put into sharp relief the heavy toll meat-packing work can take on members of a workforce that often have few other opportunities.

After employees first began to test positive for the coronavirus, some told CBC News they continued to work in close quarters with colleagues despite physical distancing measures put in place by the company and said Cargill pressured them to return to work even after they contracted COVID-19.

And I am at work because there is literally no one else who could work my shift (even the owner is covering for someone else), and the business would have to close for the night if I hadn’t come in.

I wasn’t expecting to be told to go home, I knew that wasn’t possible. I didn’t expect to be told ‘oh, mine make me lose my eye sight, drink lots of water’.

Fuck. Off.

I could have called in sick. There’s not a doctor in the country that wouldn’t have given me the day off.

But here I am, in so much I wanna blow my brains out, working for a woman who literally does not care.
