(՞⸝⸝ᵒ̴̶̷꒳ᵒ̴̶̷⸝⸝՞)💕HAPPY VALENTINES DAY(՞⸝⸝ᵒ̴̶̷꒳ᵒ̴̶̷⸝⸝՞)💕
I bring you wolves in love + me talking about dispersal wolves and pups
A dispersal wolf is a wolf that's around 1-3 years old and are ready to leave there birth pack and create new one with there mate
This helps avoid inbreeding
Around 2-3 years old the start a mating process in jan-march and pups are usual born in April to about may with about four to six pups
A pup will stay in the den for the first few weeks relaying on the moms milk
Then they emerge and really on the packs and parents help
The other wolves help my chewing the food first and regurgitating back up for the pups
For awhile the stay at the den site relying on others for food, then at about six months start going on hunts and truly learning how to be a wolf
I know we are talking a lot about how these dire wolves aren't actually dire wolves and it brought up a question about how we define species.
A few classes ago, I was learning about genetics and ecology and we did an entire section about orca ecotypes (vagrant, southern resident etc). One of the assignments was to discuss whether or not these ecotypes should be considered separate species or not because, currently, they are not. This is due to our definition of species.
Each of the ecotypes has marked and observable differences in behavior, size, and prey choice and these differences are believed to be part of why the ecotypes won't interbreed with one another. So I stood on the side that said they should be different species.
Now, back to the not-so-dire wolves. I see a lot of discussion about how these are just transgenic gray wolves and recently saw a comment about how the morphological definition of species cannot be used here and how this definition is close to eugenics.
Can someone break this down for me a bit? Why are these not dire wolves? I understand that we haven't cloned dires and have just added some dire genetics into grays, but how does this scientist get away with saying they are dires if they are not?
