Indian Thorn Apple aka Datura metel - There is considerable variation in this datura species alone. Violet blooming varieties are normally var. fastuosa other varieties are white, yellow and even blue. Metel can also be recognized by its fruits, having fewer thorns. It is cultivated commercially as a source of scopolamine. The Vama Purana tells us that the datura grew from the rest of Shiva, god of inebriants. Flowers and fruits are left on Shiva’s altars and garlands of the plant left on lingam stones. Sadhus In particular smoke the leaves of datura mixed with other herbs like Aconitum ferox and cannabis (not recommended).
