This stingy thorny plant is called field eryngo (Eryngium campestre). In German it is known by various names, such as Feld-Mannstreu, Donnerdistel, Gemeine Brachdistel, Rolldistel, Elend and Unruh. When the seeds are ripe, the stems break off and are carried away, rolling along the ground and forming clusters, which are called "Steppenhexen". I collected some smaller branches on the rhine river, taking care not to disturb the myriads of bumblebees frequenting the bushy plants. It is cultivated commercially as a source of scopolamine. The Vama Purana tells us that the datura grew from the rest of Shiva, god of inebriants. Flowers and fruits are left on Shiva’s altars and garlands of the plant left on lingam stones. Sadhus In particular smoke the leaves of datura mixed with other herbs like Aconitum ferox and cannabis (not recommended).
