The plant known as the Blue lotus is a water lily native to fresh waters in eastern Africa and parts of Arabia and Asia. Since ancient times it has been used medicinally and considered sacred by multiple peoples including the Ancient Egyptians, Buddhists and Hindus. The plant contains two compounds in the flower — apomorphine and nuciferine, which make it psychoactive, inducing a calming affect when consumed. For thousands of years this plant has been used in traditional healing and spiritual ceremonies. I flame sculpted this blue lotus flower and lily pad with borosilicate glass and used resin on a mirror to create the water ripple effects for the base. Solanum dulcamara- bittersweet nightshade - dulcamara can be translated to “sweet-bitter” Bitter herbs and bitterness in general was associated with wickedness and maleficia in the ancient world. Bitterness was a kind of poison, and we often hear of the “waters being made bitter”. Bitterness is unpalatable, not for your comfort and enjoyment. Wormwood is another infamous bitter herb.
