Bucky: You know what they say, it's not the size, it's the quantity.

“This is gonna end badly,” the underling warns. Brock would appreciate the woman’s concern a lot more, if he didn’t know she wouldn’t so much as glance at his dying body if she thought it would get her further up in the organisation. HYDRA didn’t choose their recruits for their empathy.

“Tell me something I don’t know,” he grunts, holsters his favourite gun. Hesitates for a moment, then grabs one of their better rifles as well.

“Sir, with all due respect, the Asset will complete the mission,” the underling insists. Brock wishes he could remember her name, she’s really starting to piss him off now. “His programming is flawless.”

“He won’t kill Stark,” he says anyways, with absolute certainty. Doesn’t know why he’s telling her this. Maybe just because he needs to tell someone.

“And what are you gonna do? Kill Stark in the Asset’s stead? Kill the Asset?” The woman’s voice is high with disbelief.

Brock smiles darkly. “What I do and don’t do is none of your concern. Now fuck off before I decide to take your questions personally.”

Mentally going over his inventory one more time, Brock doesn’t pay the underling any attention as he leaves the base with the same sureness in his steps that he always has. 

Despite the monumentality of his decision, his face remains even, his gait steady. There is no room for doubts in his mind, only the clarity that comes with a clear goal. And all the contingencies he has put into place for a case just like this.

The underling watches him stalk off with an incredulous head shake. But despite her disbelief she is unsurprised to learn that Rumlow hasn’t returned to the base four days later. She’s not expecting him to return ever again.

That was how it started. With those simple, oh so innocent sounding words.

Not their relationship. And no, not the end of the world either. Something worse. Something so much worse it physically hurt Brock to think about, even just in the relative privacy of his own mind.

He hadn’t--couldn’t have, really--known it at the time of course. Bucky had probably suspected something, in retrospect that was clear. But had the bastard given Brock even so much as a hint of a warning? Of course not.

He’d pay for that, Brock would make sure of it.

All things considered, it probably wasn’t that huge a deal. Not really. It hadn’t even cost any lives. Yet. But still.

It was the principle of things.

Brock hadn’t even realised, not until it had already been too late anyways.

Rationally he was well aware that, out of the three of them, Tony was by far the greatest threat. Oh, he couldn’t fight the way Brock could and certainly couldn’t kill the way Bucky was capable of--whether he liked it or not--but he had resources and a mind neither of them could match. If he wanted to, really wanted to, Tony Stark could do a possibly unmatched amount of damage.

Brock knew that, had always known that. (HYDRA had known it and so did SHIELD.)

The public was another matter. Tony Stark was a familiar figure and that alone made him appear deceptively non-threatening. It didn’t help that Bucky walked in the intimidating shadow of the Winter Soldier, and Brock was a known double-agent. Reputation-wise it made perfect sense to fear them.

But it had to end eventually. Brock had known it would--on some level. He’d just been caught off-guard, hadn’t expected this particular event to trigger the change.

He really should have known better.

Because sooner or later Tony was bound to be stuck on a fifteen day long mission. Without coffee.

And just like that, Tony became the most feared member out of their triad.
