When the choir gets mad that you aren't preaching to them...
Something I've noticed a few times around here is that when arguments are made to try to bring people around to a particular way of thinking, they are often attacked by people who already think that way. Remembering particularly the "She's somebody's wife, mother, daughter" etc meme, and a poster series meant to discourage bullying by getting people to think about the hidden struggles their targets might already be dealing with.
Some people seem to get angry if you argue a point on anything other than its obvious, undeniable truth, and either don't realize or don't care that people who don't think that way already are rarely swayed by repeating a point loudly, or insults for "not getting it."
Is this a widely observed effect in politics, do people everywhere get mad when, for instance, you argue for a position on economic or logistical grounds instead of moral ones? Or is it a fringe effect? Or just one of Tumblr's special aspects?
My toxic pet owner trait is referring to the guinea pigs as "short pork" to distinguish them from both store bought chops and the hubby.
HP fanfic set in 3rd year is so frustrating because I am apparently out of step with 99% of the fandom on every major subplot. And even if it's not a major part of the fic, there will be these little dropped lines that I want to start a fistfight over, but you can't do that especially if they're just following the background canon.

geordi was that level of drama really necessary i have to ask
Absolutely, yes.
@itsallavengers
In the semi-finals!
proposing a new genre of fiction called an anti-romance where u r presented w a couple at the start & the story is about their emotional journey towards a catastrophic break up
will they won't they (end this farce). there's only one bed (but for some reason they don't really want to share it). out of context eavesdropping (that paints the relationship in a better light than it deserves). chasing after them to stop them getting on that plane (and stopping them from finally being free)
nobody understands my vision i don't mean any old story where a relationship fails and it's tragic or w/e i mean a story where the intention is for the audience to root for it failing the same way u root for it succeeding in a romance. & when the relationship finally implodes at the climax of the story it's all very cathartic & everybody cheers.
like have u never wanted a fictional couple to break up so badly it hurt?
I think the closest I've seen to this would be Chasing Amy, or maybe Buffy and Angel's third season romance plot. It just seems like if one of them isn't the active Bad Guy, they're just not right for each other, the breakup isn't a Good Thing, just a thing that needs to happen and will likely have a bittersweet feeling rather than a triumphant one.
I think it would work best as a B plot to an action adventure or thriller where instead of the estranged or divorced couple coming together again by working together, they see how amazingly happy and at home the other one is in their chosen life and that those lives don't fit together. Or maybe something happening in the background as friends of the main characters who love them as individuals but desperately want them to end it.
Maybe it's just that waiting for something good to happen is anticipation for me, but waiting for something bad to end is just annoying.
maybe this is too woke but i really hate the trope of naked older women = scary or vomit inducing or gross or whatever. like you even see it used in horror on occasion like oooooo so scary theres a woman with saggy boobs and wrinkles. There is something to be said for unconsensual veiwing of nudity. sure. it’s uncomfortable and violating for someone to be nude in front of you that you don’t want to see. but rarely that’s seen as the issue and instead the real ‘horror’ or gross out joke is the very idea of a woman who does not have a body that is sexually desirable to men. The very idea of an older woman’s body is treated like it’s something that we should all know is gross, sick and wrong. It’s just something that really bothers me
You're very right about people portraying older womens' bodies as horrifying because they're not normatively sexually appealing, but I will say that the idea of non-consensual nudity is fraught. Like obviously there are times where we don't want to see people naked or don't feel comfortable with it, but the human body is not sexual. If you see a person naked on the street, that's their business if that makes sense. You can decide in your own space how comfortable you are with nudity obviously, including being entirely uncomfortable with it, but that's what makes "Nude Scary Person" scary, the Invasion of Space. The way it impinges upon your comfort and violates your rules.
I've been seeing this take all over the notes, and am responding to yours because it's reply-able without cutting and pasting.
With respect, have you ever heard of flashers? People (generally men) exposing themselves to people who have no expectation or desire to see them, SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE, those people don't want to see them and it gives them a thrill to force that on them. It's a real thing. It's often played for laughs, but having experienced it, it can be extremely unfunny.
There is a difference between unexpected exposure to nudity and actual non consensual exposure of nudity (or simply of genitals.) Claiming the latter doesn't exist does not in any way aid your defense of the former.

GRAMMAR RANT!!!! Today we are ranting about the proper use of "let alone" or the equivalent "much less."
People usually get the basic structure right which is, [Proper Noun] hadn't [Verbed] [Noun], let alone [Noun]. The problem is that they they reverse the significance order.
Correct usage would be, for example, "Sue had never left her home town, let alone the country!" The first point encompasses the second and emphasizes just how out of the question that second point is.
So you don't say, "they hadn't left the bedroom, let alone the bed." You can easily leave the bed without leaving the bedroom. This swapped usage makes "let alone" out to mean "or even" but it's actually the opposite.
This may not make much sense as it is late, but it's stopping me from wanting to rant at innocent fic writers.

Boy, 11, dies of rabies after bat encounter during family trip | newscentermaine.com

Tragic story but a reminder to those of us in North America and other rabies endemic regions not to fuck around with bats. From the article :
Doctors emphasized that any direct contact with a bat — even without an obvious bite or scratch — should prompt a discussion with public health authorities about preventive treatment, since bat bites can be too small to notice.
Remember, the only effective treatment is prophylactic (essentially rush immunizing the patient before the virus actual sets in) so even the earliest symptoms are too late a warning. Be over cautious, be paranoid, and if you have the animal trapped, call the health department to see if it can be tested.

Guess who's in my (very loosely defined) neighborhood today?
HP fanfic :
"...by Rite of Conquest."
Me, foaming at the mouth : It doesn't work that way, it's not SPELLED that way, and if it did, Bellatrix would be Lady Longbottom and Black!
