Destiel prompt: âI told you something safe / something Iâve never said beforeâ (Animal by Troye Sivan)
When night comes, when theyâve all had their share of hugs and tearful reunions, when Jack has come and left again, when Eileen has fallen asleep on the couch, when Claire has driven the five hours straight to crash into Casâs arms, when night comes, Dean leads Cas to his room. Miracle trots behind them, dancing a little at Casâs heels.
âShe likes you,â Dean says, once Cas sits on the edge of the bed and Miracle leaps into his lap with a bark.Â
âSheâs very sweet.â Cas is gently ruffling along under Miracleâs ears, smiling. âI wouldnât have expected you to take in a dog.â
Dean loiters in the doorway and puts a hand to the back of his neck. How can he explain it? You were gone and I couldnât move. You were gone and I had to force myself to speak so that it burned my throat. You were gone and everyone was gone but there was a dog. Instead, he doesnât say anything. He just walks to Cas, stands in front of him and tries to breath.
Cas tilts his head up and theyâre sharing one of those stares like they used to, like back when Cas was still trying to convince Dean to give himself over to an archangel. Something in Dean has shifted, though, because know he knows what Cas sees when he looks at him. He knows what Cas sees right now, looking at him.
With gentle hands, because he still loves her more than he can explain, Dean moves Miracle so that sheâs on the bed beside them. And then he sinks, slowly, to his knees. Heâs between Casâs legs and Cas is looking at him with eyes that are so incredibly kind. Self-doubt kicks up some dust, tells him he doesnât deserve that kindness, those eyes, this love. But he remembers what Cas told him.
âYou told me something,â Dean begins. âBefore The Empty took you, before you saved me. You told me something Iâve never heard before.â
âDean, we donât have--â
Dean cuts Cas with his hands cupping over his knees. He straightens, up off his heels, so that his eyes are closer to Casâs and he breathes out slow. âNow I want to tell you something.â
âI told you, it was enough for me just to say it. I donât need anything more.â Casâs face is broken open and heâs smiling at Dean.
âNo, I want to. I need to. I want to tell you something. Something true, something safe.â He sighs and Casâs lets his hand over Deanâs cheek. âI want to tell you something Iâve never said before.â
Dean closes his eyes. Cas leans forward and lets his lips rest on Deanâs forehead.
âI love you, Cas. I love you, too. Of course, I do.â Dean swallows thick but itâs not pained or shot through with regret like his prayer in Purgatory had been. âI love you and thatâs something you deserve. You deserve to know that I love you, that we all love you. And I...â Dean opens his eyes. âI deserve to have you love me.â
âOf course, you do.â
When they kiss, itâs soft and tender and something that Dean doesnât think heâs ever had. Itâs a future and itâs a promise.
âWould you stay?â Dean asks. âWould you stay here? With me?â
âAlways,â Cas answers.
âTonight?â Dean asks, nodding to indicate the bed. âTonight and all the other nights. Cas...â
Cas shakes his head and kisses Deanâs forehead again, firm and sure. âIâm here, Dean. And I wonât leave. Not as long as you want me.â
âI want you,â Dean admits and he rises. He takes Casâs hand, and they settle into the bed, together.
