In the grand scheme of things, it feels like Shepard being in the Lazarus project was there just so the Catalyst Kid could go “BUT YOU’RE PARTLY SYNTHETIC TOO OMG”. They really didn’t do much with it, not even comparisons to Reaper modification.
I don't agree with this at all. It "feels" that way to the extent that Mac and Chud had to frantically reach back and grasp at any straw they could find to justify this last minute addition that they shoehorned into the story and built the conflict around. The organic vs. synthetic shit and Starkid are pretty much entirely a product of Drew K. leaving, his ideas being left by the wayside, and the original script being scrapped (Starkid wasn't even mentioned in the leaked script IIRC, Javik was the Catalyst). But Lazarus was conceived of in an entirely different narrative context, and it shows.
I thought Citadel actually did a really good job of dealing with some of the themes it brought up in an indirect way, as generally goofy as it was and as much as it was played for laughs. Far better than the from-left-field scene in Cronos Station tbh.
