what about. Leno and Tom are leopard seal hybrids like selkies or something. and the caps are a group of researchers in Antarctica. Dylan stumbles upon a stuck leopard seal pup and just as he frees it here comes Tom, this 13 foot fully grown leopard seal who has been frantically searching for his pup, lunging at Dylan and almost drowns him before scurrying away with Leno.
itâs the scariest experience ever and Dylanâs lucky to come out of it alive, but in researcher fashion he of course wants to try to find them again and observe. from a safe distance this time. and not alone. for research purposes! there is not a lot of info on leopard seals!
tom does try to scare them away sometimes but for the most part he is just lounging or swimming with leno like this
and sometimes the team will even give them batches of fresh fish. dylan really wants to get into the water with them to actually video tape how they swim and vocalize. maybe one day he risks it when he thinks tom is chill enough and leno immediately races over to him, swimming and twirling in circles. even offers him a dead penguin. with tom keeping a close eye of course.
dylan doesnât really know theyâre hybrids until tom walks up in human form to their compound and tells them all to fuck off. and theyâre all so confused likeâŚwho are you?? where did you come from??? are you part of another organization????
anyway thatâs all i have for now just thought it was cute lol

sea otter pup leno who is very capable as a human but is stuck being a baby otter because he got rescued by researchers and is now too afraid to turn back into a human because heâs under 24 hour care. and they are so nice to him, giving him cuddles and grooming his fur and helping him develop otter skills and also feeding him. he misses human food a lot though. but when heâs an otter his instincts and tastebuds are very different.
when he is especially whiny and tired the researchers call on dubie because they noticed that leno will fall asleep against his chest the quickest. leno canât help it.
tom and dylan are paired together a lot to watch leno and leno sometimes feels like heâs their literal baby. itâs obvious to him that theyâre together or in some kind of relationship because one day tom is swaddling leno and holding him and says outright to dylan âwe should have a babyâ and leno very much agrees. they are taking very good care of him, they SHOULD have a baby. but also he wants to be their only baby lol he wants all the attention
anyway sorry ive just been watching a lot of sea otter videos and i am so mesmerized by how useless otter pups are and think leno should be one.
here is a little wip ive had for a long time and would like to finish one day. any thoughts?
baby alpha leno learning how to be a good alpha by watching dylan court tom, but he accidentally projects what heâs learned onto beta PLD

Dylan keeps inviting Ryan to the nest on roadies, and he says yes every single time. Thereâs no other rookie on the team to room with him so heâs been by himself, which is fine when he needs to cool off. The start of his NHL career has been wild to the point he needs his alone time to function, but for home games he at least has Dubie to talk to when that alone time becomes a littleâŚWell, lonely.
He could have gone to Dubieâs hotel room at any time, he knows, or really anyoneâs room, but heâs the rookie, heâs the new kid, and kids are annoying sometimes, so he never asked.
Dylan asks him though, and Ryan has yet to say no. He enjoys his time with them, and Dylanâs face lights up every time he agrees to join. Tom is just as excited too, though he always seems shocked, like he truly wasnât expecting Ryan to keep saying yes. But then he shifts into nest-building mode, and Ryan gets to watch him do his thing. He gets pulled into the group, situated right in the middle, all three of them watching movies to cool down, chatting softly until they fall asleep.
Lately, Tomâs been making nests for Ryan to nap in, and itâs the best. Both Tom and Dylan seem to know when Ryan wants to be alone, and theyâll leave the room to go somewhere, presumably on dates or something, he doesnât know. They always bring back food for him.
Most times he wakes up on his own, but sometimes theyâre a little too loud when they come back into the room, waking him from his nap. He pretends to keep sleeping just to listen to them talk, maybe peek his eyes open and watch them float around each other with practiced ease, fitting perfectly together in their daily lives.
They donât showcase their courtship out in public or around the team, something Ryanâs always found odd. Courting is supposed to be possessive, with excessive scenting and the Alpha showing increased aggression towards anyone who so much as looks at their future mate, but he sees none of that with Tom and Dylan. Dylan doesnât have an aggressive bone in his body and shows no signs of jealousy when Tom is around other Alphas outside of their team. If anything, Tom is the aggressive one. Heâs seen him gnash his teeth at anyone who gets a little too handsy around him, which, surprisingly, arenât even Caps fansâitâs other NHL players and their fans, which Ryan thinks is hilarious.
The more he hangs out with them though, the more he understands their dynamic. Tom is obviously a very different Omega, and Dylan easily navigates through those differences fluidly, allowing Tom to be who he is and never stepping on his toes. If he does, itâs on purpose; Ryanâs noticed that Dylan can be a little shit and likes to poke the bear a lot, just to see Tomâs snarl. Ryan thinks itâs some sort of enrichment.
Heâs learning a lot from them, especially Dylan. Watching him do his Alpha duties in ways that cater to Tomâs needs has done wonders to Ryanâs perception of Alphas and their roles, a realization dawning on him that maybe he doesnât have to be like the Alphas heâs grown up seeing. He doesnât have to be the dominant one. Maybe he can just love his mate and have that be enough.
So he kind of starts practicing.
He starts with nest building, because Dylan actually knows how to build one and Ryan wants to know, too. It makes senseâwhat if their Omega is sick, or injured? Who is going to build the nest? Itâs stupid that the expectation solely relies on them, and nests are good for everyone.
Itâs a little awkward though when Dubie first catches him doing it.
When Dubie knocks on his bedroom door one day, Ryan calls out his permission to come in before thinking that actually, maybe he shouldnât. Itâs too late to backtrack, Dubie was opening the door, eyes immediately darting to the bed.
âHuh,â Dubie muses after an awkward moment of silence. âYouâre not usually this messy. Something wrong?â
âUh, no. Iâm just.â Ryanâs face heats up as he thinks up an excuse, before deciding there is nothing wrong with being honest hereâDubieâs seen worse and never judged. âIâm trying to build a nest, actually.â
He doesnât know why he feels embarrassed by it, itâs not completely unheard of for an Alpha to make a nest. He just canât help but feel stuck in time, the instincts heâs always been expected to have clashing with the new things heâs learned that are actually okay and he wonât be struck down for doing them. Plus, heâs living in Dubieâs house, and he doesnât want to be weird.
Dubie settles his inner turmoil by simply not caring.
âOh, okay,â is all he says, though he still looks concerned. âIs there a reason, orâŚ? Like, are you feeling down or something?â Heâs obviously tiptoeing here, not wanting to intrude but trying to understand. Ryan shakes his head.
âNope, just practicing.â
Nodding, Dubie accepts that and says, âOkay, well thereâs food downstairs if you want any.â
And thatâs kind of it. Dubie doesnât comment on the nest any further than that, not even when Ryan continues to practice and practice in the weeks following. He does help him sometimes, offering advice when passing by, donating older towels and blankets so Ryan isnât constantly wrinkling his clean clothes. Ryan would use his dirty clothes, but Dubie is a Beta and human scents arenât as appealing to him. He doesnât want to be rude by practicing with a pile of stinking shirts and pants.
Also, he kind of wants Dubie to lie in his nests, so clean material it is.
Thereâs no real reason why Ryan wants Dubie in the nest, none that he wants to think hard about, anyway. He just tells him he needs a guinea pig, someone to test on. Ryan can easily make one to the shape of his own body now, but he wants it like how Tom does it, where he can just look at someone and know what to do.
When he asks Dubie if he can be that test subject, avoiding eye contact and face burning a bright red, Dubie once again quells his nerves with his nonchalance, shrugging like Ryan just asked him if he wanted to watch a movie.
He lies down gingerly in the nest, a little awkward at first, and Ryan realizes this may be his first time in one. That settles something ticklish in his stomach, and he shakes it off, ignores whatever it is, and helps arrange Dubie properly. Which only makes his stomach feel weirder as he touches him.
âItâs kinda nice,â Dubie says, surprised, and Ryan is preening from the praise. Dubie looks around a bit more, moves a thing or two from behind his back. Then he looks at Ryan with a soft smile. âYeah, this is nice. Good job, Kiddo.â
Ryan smiles back at him, his Alpha singing.
As his time with the Caps shifts into the playoffs, heâs pretty good at making nests for Dubie, who seems to appreciate the effort. The games are intense, far more intense than anything Ryanâs experienced, and at home he gets to spend his cool down time with Dubie in his very own nest. And all the while, Ryan continues observing Dylan, picking up on his tricks.
Dylan watches Tom a lot, and Ryan realizes that heâs looking for new quirks and behaviors, paying attention to how he reacts to situations and what sorts of things can affect his mood. Dubie mentioned that they started courting a few weeks after the season started, so theyâre still getting a feel for each other. Thatâs almost hard to believeâtheyâre so comfortable already, sharing their space, shoulder to shoulder, flashing smiles in each otherâs direction whenever theyâre separated. Theyâre subtle around the guys, but in closed quarters theyâre attached to the hip.
Ryan absorbs as much as he can from them, and the playoffs is a great atmosphere for more learning content, both for hockey and growing up. Thereâs a lot to focus on though, more than his young brain is used to, and while he is trying his best to be more observant in others, he overlooks one major thing.
Everything heâs learned from Dylan, he projects onto Dubie.
It feels natural enough that he doesnât catch on until heâs back home for the off season.
