Plant of the Day

This Pyrus communis (wild pear) has a history of arboricultural practices, when a branch was lost in the 1960s the hollow trunk was filled with bricks and covered in tar. This type of procedure is no longer recommended but the tree is gradually growing around the bricks. Wild pears usually grow to 12m tall but some can reach up to 20m. The crown of the tree is domed and the branches can have spiny twigs.
