The first dream wasnât that noticeable, just a young boy walking out of a house at night, holding a lantern. And so Link didnât acknowledge it, even if the house and the boy were familiar. After all, dreams donât come from nothing.
The second dream wasnât that interesting. Same boy, walking in the night holding his lantern. It was raining now, the boy would be drenched in a few minutes. But Link woke up, and the boy wasnât that interesting anymore, even if his stance and his small hands were familiar. After all, dreams donât come from nothing.
The third dream was a bit more worrying. The young boy was drenched, clothes heavy with rain. He was on all fours, pushing dirt and leaves to the side, looking for something. And when Link woke up, for the first time he thought of the boy, with the familiar house, stance, hands. But then he turned around and went to prepare breakfast. It was normal. The boy looked familiar. After all, dreams donât come from nothing.
The fourth dream was terrifying. The boy was crying, hands covered in dirt and blood, holding the body of an old man, urging him to wake up, to move, to help him, not to leave him alone. And when the body didnât move, the boy stood up, took the sword the man was holding in his hands, and turned around, still covered in water, dirt and blood, still crying, still scared. And as the boy turned around, for the first time Link saw his face. A familiar face. So familiar. And the more he looked the more the face was familiar and so Link looked, he knew that face, he knew those shaky and bloody hands and this face. This face smelled like ashes
The scent of food, smoke filled his lungs warm and real. And Wild opened his eyes

Hello, hi!
As always, I'm not a native English speaker, so please let me know if anything I wrote doesn't make sense. I honestly have no idea where I'm going with this. I have around five chapters ready, but at the same time it's my first multi-chapter fic and I'm a bit nervous. So yeah, it might not go anywhere. But I really like the beginning, so here, take it!
Please tell me what you think and everything, hehe.

But, the portal was different this time. Instead of a bright blue, white and gold hue that surrounded him in Goddess magic, a dark, purplish silver portal enveloped him. He felt his goddess magic that resides in him resist against the magic that screamed evil, danger, leave. His head felt as if it was splitting apart, being forced open with a knife and shear pressure.Â
He gasped in pain, clutching at his head as he slowly began to reform in the new area, he hadnât even opened his eyes before he felt his body fall to the floor, thinking was impossible by then, pure pain radiated through his body as he struggled on the ground to try and regain control of his body.Â
The undeniable taste of his own blood filled his mouth, blood spilling from his lips before he could stop it. Was he going to die? Wild forced down his panic, opening his eyes dispite the pain from a being of the gods, entering a land far beyond their light, a plane only known to those of evil.Â
His vision cleared after what seemed to be hours, eyes burning from the strain of trying to keep them open in the hellish landscape. He was vaguely aware of the man sat before him, chuckling lightly as he struggled to not die on the spot.Â
He felt a hand on his own, pain coating his hand as the man touched it, feeling as if it had been branded rather then just touched by him.Â
âThere we go, sit still now. We donât want you to die on the spot do we?â The voice whispered in his ear, encouraging him gently as he gasped in a breath he hadnât realized he was holding in. Wild clutched at his chest, the mechanical beating of his heart going quick as he struggled in the new realm of the unholy.Â
âThere you go, take your time wild.â The form spoke again, holding his hand still as it rubbed his hand encouragingly, pain searing on his hand in a seeming triangle formation. âSee? your fine now, no?â The man asked.Â
âWhatâŠ.â He coughed, wiping his mouth from the blood that had dropped from it. âThis place⊠itââÂ
âIs untouched by Hylia yes.â The man said, standing once more, reaching his hand to wild, who took it gratefully. The hand was cold, feeling like he was touching one of a corpse rather then a human. âGoddess magic canât reach this place, which is rather⊠inconvenient when it comes to your⊠situation.â He gestures to wilds whole being, looking him up and down once.Â
âWho?â He asked, words failing him once more as he struggled to recover from the pain that paralyzed him. The man laughed at his question, sitting in his rather oversized throne.Â
âReally depends on who you ask, officially, itâs Dark Link, or rather the⊠shadow of you all.â He moved his hands about in a flourish as he spoke, before sweeping his hand in a circle, a chair hit the back of wilds knees, forcing him into the seat. âHonestly, the goddesses are a bitâŠÂ much arenât they. âÂ
Um so Hi! I'm back! I'll go into more detail in another post, but I come bearing a gift?
This is part of my Hero of Wild Series. Here is the archive link if you want to catch up :)
âL-l-i-ink. Li- k-lee-lehnâ Wildâs voice sputtered out in his throat, a flare of pain erupting and cutting him off. A water pouch was shoved in his face.
âDrink this.â Twilight stated for the tenth time in an hour; not that he minded. He supposed that reminding Wild to drink water was the least he could do for the boy working so hard in front of him.
âLiehn-â Wildâs face pinched in concentration.Â
âWild.â Twilight interrupted, sloshing the water closer to the teenâs face. That seemed to snap the boy from his trance-like state. Wild gently took the water, and Twilight guessed he was overcompensating, not wanting to take his anger out at Twilight or Sky. Although Twilight appreciated it, he would have understood.
âThanksâ. Wild signed the word quickly and nonchalantly, obviously trying to wave off his supposed failures.Â
âNo problem.â Twilight said instead of all the things he wanted to say. Sure Wild was a great kid, but Twilight barely knew how to interact with him. The kid was an enigma, what could he say?
You uh- Youâre making good progress, you know that right?â Twilight resisted smacking himself in the forehead when heÂ
âHeâs right.â Sky added, speaking up for the first time in a while. âNo matter how much you donât believe it, itâs true.â
âYeah!â Sky raised a brow at how loudly and desperately Twilight tacked onto his comment. âYou said your name, thatâs a lot of progress. And Iâve only been with you guys for a week.âÂ
âA week to say my own name. Not even fully.â Wild signed mournfully. He didnât want to complain, he didnât. He was grateful for Sky and Twilight for helping him, but he was just⊠starting to lose hope.
âYou act like it will be this hard forever.â Twilight spoke up, not allowing himself to overthink his words. âThe basics are always hard. This is just like learning how to use a weapon. Youâre amazing with your bow, but you had to learn the basics, right?â Wild thought that over, not registering the compliment and not mentioning the fact that he didnât even remember learning how to use his bow. He woke up and knew how to wield his weapons. Still, he nodded.
âNot to change the subject.â Sky drew their attention his way. âTime has been understanding about us leaving everyday, but itâs been a few weeks, Wild. Iâm not sure how long we can keep making excuses. The other Links wonât pry if we ask them not too⊠but⊠have you maybe considered now that you have more practice in, it might be best to tell them?â Sky had never sounded so hesitant before, but that wasnât what Wild was focused on. He felt his entire body heat up, his heart beating in his ears as they rang.
Time? Hylia no. If Time was there when Wild was attempting to speak he was sure he would never get a word out.Â
Warriors? The proud captain. No, after all the steady orders and comments from the man, Wild didnât even know how he would react. Warriors was the embodiment of confidence.Â
Hyrule? Wind? Four? Maybe it would be alright if they knew, but Wild certainly preferred if they didnât.Â
Legend? Wild shuddered at the thought. Something about the way Legendâs calculating, icy gaze bored into him felt like the older man could look into his soul. He probably could. Legend practically oozed magic, even Wild could tell; and it wasnât in the same way that Hyrule did. Wild couldnât really explain the difference. It just threw him off a little.
Wild shook his head, feeling a spike of guilt at the sad looks Sky and Twilight sent each other. âIâm sorry I justâŠâÂ
âItâs okay, Wild. We understand, promise. Just- just think about it, please. You were scared for Twilight to know, and it turned out fine. Right?â Wild bit his lip. That was a good point. Twilight hadnât treated him differently, besides wanting to help. But having all the Links know would just be suffocating.
âIâll think about it.â Wild signed, not expecting Sky's gentle smile.Â
âThank you, Wild. Thatâs all we ask.â That was the thing about Sky. He was always kind, always patient, always gentle. Just like⊠well. Just like some of the people Wild had met on his journey. Wild guessed that Sky still held a storm inside, always ready to be unleashed. Wild tried to return the smile, but it turned out to be more of a grimace. The nerves in his face seemed to not be cooperating with him, the two across from him didnât seem to mind.Â
âWould you like to take a longer break, or start again?â Sky asked, already knowing the answer.Â
âStart please.â Wild signed without hesitation. Sky and Twilight exchanged a fond look, before their practice began again.Â
âOkay, remember the way the tongue should be with the âLâ sound. Sky realized later that perhaps a word with an âLâ wouldnât be the best place to start, but too late to start now. Wild nodded.
âTip against the teeth.â Wild signed out of habit. He had that movement drilled into his head. It was doing it that was the problem.
âL-â Wild began.
âGood! That was a lot clearer than before.â Sky meant it. Wild didnât believe it, but breaks did help. Wild was just stubborn. Just like all the Links, Sky mused. âNow the âiââ. Wild nodded, this was how all their teachings went, but Sky told him that habits were sometimes the best way to learn. The âiâ sound was the hardest part for him. Pushing the air out and forming his mouth right was hard for him.
âeh- ehe- eeâ.
âGood! Now weld them together.âÂ
âLi-Li-â Wild pushed out.
âDonât rush yourself.â Sky chided.Â
âLi-Leh-Lin-Li-nk. Link.â Wild hadnât even noticed it at first, but Sky and Twilight sure did.
âWild!â Twilight called excitedly. Wild froze. He said it. He said it!Â
âI said it!â Wild signed, so excited that his words slurred together.
âWe know!â Sky laughed merrily. Twilight reached out to ruffle the younger's hair, but froze. This wasnât an Ordonian kid. This was Wild. Wild didn;t like touch.
âAmazing job, Wild! I told you that you could!â Sky waved his hands over his head.Â
âLi-nk. Lin-k. Link.â The more Wild said it, the easier the word formed in his mouth. He didnât want to stop, he didnât want this to end-
A twig snapped.
The three jumped up from the grass, Sky and Twilight grabbing their discarded swords, and Wild grabbing his bow.
âStop! Stop, itâs me.â Wildâs blood went cold. He knew that voice,
âLegend! What in Hylia are you doing?â Twilight practically snarled, noticing Wildâs horrified face.
âCool it, goat boy!â
âEveryone calm down.â Sky commanded, his firm voice sweeping over the small opening in the trees. Legend emerged from the small patch of shrubbery he was standing behind. He didnât look like he was intentionally eavesdropping, but that didnât matter to Wild. He heard, he heard, he heard. Was all that was running through his head. Â
âLook. I didnât mean to overhear. Hyrule managed to wrangle his way out of camp and I was looking for him.â Legendâs arms crossed over his chest and Wild noticed that Legendâs eyes were gazing everywhere but at Wildâs own. âI heard you and I just⊠froze I guess. I wasnât expecting it.â
âPlease donât tell.â
âWhy not?â Legend raised an eyebrow.
âEmbarrassing.â Wild felt his cheeks heating up at even the thought of the others knowing. Three out of eight is bad enough.
âEmbarrassing? How is that-â Legend cut himself off and took a breath. âCan I talk to Wild? Alone?âÂ
âWhat? Why?â Twilight questioned. Wild waved in Twilightâs peripheral.Â
âItâs ok.â
âI- If youâre positive, Wild.â Twilight glanced over at Sky.
âWeâll give you two a few minutes. We need to refill some of the water pouches anyway.â Sky and Twilight walked away, one far more hesitantly than the other, and part of Wild wished he hadnât agreed. Okay, most of Wild didnât want them to go. He felt Legendâs icy eyes staring into him. Wild took a deep breath, willing the blood in his ears to stop rushing long enough to hear the other hero out.
âI get it, I do. I would think the same if I were you, probably. You shouldnât be though. Embarrassed, I mean.â Â Wild scrunched his nose and Legend almost laughed. Wind, Hyrule and Warriors all did that when they were contemplating something; just like Legend. His uncle used to poke the lines between his face when Legend was thinking too hard.Â
Legend took another breath, willing the thoughts away. Judging by Wildâs subtle eye twitch, Legendâs sigh came out far more frustrated than he meant it to.
Legend awkwardly sat down, silently inviting WIld to join him. He could see the kid glance longingly at the path that Sky and Twilight took and winced. He really did suck at first impressions, didnât he?
âLook Iâm sorry for how I acted when I first met you, but I didnât know you and we thought we had everyone in our merry little band. Iâm not gonna bite, though.â Legend sighed at himself in his head. He never could get the words out right, could he? To his surprise, the kidâs lips twitched upwards and he sat across from him. Good, so he wasnât sensitive.
âI get it.â Legend began quietly. Wildâs brows shot up. He wasnât good at this mushy shit, but he could at least extend an olive branch. âNot exactly what youâre going through, but when I talk, I try to say something but mean something else. Iâm not the best with words that donât make me sound like an asshole, if you havenât noticed. Rav- my best friend, though, he always seems to know. No matter how annoying he is. Iâm lucky to have him.â Ugh, âlucky to have himâ? Whatever, he was just getting sentimental in being away from home.Â
Legend took another breath. In through the nose, out through the mouth.
âLook. All Iâm saying is that we all have issues. Thereâs no reason to hide it.â Hylia, talk about hypocrisy. Judging by Wildâs eyebrow twitch, the other boy was thinking the same thing. âI know, I know, thatâs rich coming from me.â Legend huffed, his own nose scrunching in thought. He looked up at an unfamiliar word signed by Wild.
âDonât know that one.â Legend stated bluntly. If Wild wanted to elaborate he would.
âB-u-n-n-y.â Legendâs blood went cold. No⊠how did he know? Was Wild more magic than he thought?Â
At Legendâs look a flash of panic coursed through Wild. Hylia he really has been in the wilderness for too long, his non-existent social skills just went through the window. The only explanation he could offer was to point at Legendâs nose.
Wild was pointing⊠at him? His eyes? No his nose. Wait⊠was he sayingâŠ
âAre you⊠saying my nose reminds you of a bunny?â Wildâs face turned red. When Legend said it like that it sounded stupid and weird. âYou little shit! You do the same!â Legend laughed, actually laughed, before tearing some grass and throwing it at Wildâs face. Wildâs look of shock was absolutely worth it. Apparently deciding that Legend was teasing and not serious, a mischievous smirk. âDonât you dare.â Legend had the audacity to say, as if he didnât start it. Wild quickly grabbed a handful of grass and threw it in Legendâs face.
âItâs on.â
Legend and Wild spent the next five minutes running and dashing, doing their best to get as much grass on the other as possible. Legend didnât know why he started it, he didnât even know the kid. Maybe he knew the kid probably needed some fun after the obvious frustration of learning to talk. Perhaps a small part of Legend knew that he could use this small respite as well. Whatever it was, this kid was going down.
If it were anyone else, Legend would have played dirty and shoved the itchy grass down Wildâs tunic. He remembered just in time that the kid hated touch. The little shit took the opportunity though, and stole Legendâs hat.
âHey!â Legend saw a variety of emotions cross Wildâs face. The first being regret that he had made a grave mistake, that the hat had held a greater significance than he thought it did. And sure, Legend would set someone on fire if they hurt the hat, but he knew Wild wouldn;t do anything of the sort. The kid seemed to realize that, and the devilish smirk seemed to return; right before he took off to the surrounding woods.
âYou little shit! Get back here!â Legend took off after him. He noticed Wild shoving something in Legendâs hat as he went. âDonât you dare!â Legend called, only seeing a flash of a smirk before Wild disappeared behind the trees. Legend ran to catch up, only to find the kid gone.
âWhere are ya?â Legend called out. Where could he be⊠it was too late that Legend realized that Wild seemed above average in climbing. Before he could look up, he felt a presence nimbly jump down behind him.
âHey-â Before Legend could turn around, something was shoved onto his head. His hat. His hat filled with grass, leaves, and was that a pinecone!?
âWild! Pleh!â Legend sputtered, desperately trying to get the grass out of his mouth that fell from his hat, freezing when he heard something he had never heard before. Wild was⊠laughing? He did that!? Since when? Maybe in another life Legend would be mad that the first time the kid laughed (to his knowledge) was at his expense. But damn if it wasnât good to hear. Especially after he thought he had royally screwed everything up by overhearing the kidâs speaking practice.
âGuess I kind of deserved that, huh?â Legend let out a small chuckle as he tried to get the grass out of his hat, Wildâs laughter had settled down, but the kid still had a crooked smile on his face.
âNo.â Wild shook his head. âI wasâŠâ Wild frowned in thought. âS-u-s-p-i-c-i-o-u-s of you too. Not your fault.â Legend could genuinely say he was surprised for the tenth time that day. And here he thought Wild hated him. Then again, Wild seemed to be scared of everyone. Maybe scared wasnât the right word. Skittish, maybe? Wild certainly fit for his name, Legend could only say that about his behavior.
âHm.â Legend finished the conversation. Wild didnât seem to mind. The two walked back in silence on the way back to the clearing. Though this time, it wasnât awkward.Â
~
âWhat happened?â Sky asked incredulously, staring at Wildâs nest of grass filled hair and Legendâs grass covered tunic.
âI donât know what youâre talking about.â Legend claimed in a deadpan voice, almost breaking his blank face when Wild shrugged next to him. âWe should probably get back to camp, before the Old Man flips his lid.â Without specifying any further, Legend began the trek back to camp. He let a smirk fall onto his face when he heard Twilight grilling Wild on what the hell happened in the small amount of time they were gone.
Legend didnât mention the fact that Wild didnât flinch or wince that entire time.

Just a heads up: This story depicts learning to verbally talk again. As with my other stories, this is based on mine and my peers experiences, as many of us have struggled with similar situations.
Thank you guys, I hope you enjoy <3
âL-â The elongated sound shuttered past his lips. Wild practically growled in frustration deep in the back of his throat.
âL-i. L-l-â
âLetâs take a break.â Sky declared gently, slowly standing up and stretching his limbs. Sky allowed himself to breathe in the crisp air, the vivid colors of the sky reflecting the approaching dusk.
His declaration, however, fell onto deaf ears as the boy sitting across from him continued making rough and garbled sounds, only a ghost of what the syllable should have been. He was doing better earlier, and Sky could tell he was getting tired.
âWild.â Sky chastised, kneeling down once more to face the boy. âDonât push yourself.â
âL- l- i-â Wildâs voice only grew quicker and more slurred.
âWild.â Sky demanded slightly louder, feeling a small pang of guilt at the flinch he saw, but grateful the boy was finally out of his own head.
âYou need a break.â This time Sky left no room for argument. Wild shook his head, opening his mouth again.
âYes, Wild.â Wild had never heard the manâs tone so stern before, and his surprise must have shown, because Sky softened his voice once more. âIf you push yourself too hard, youâre going to damage your voice further.â Wild looked down at his hands, clenching them together. He refused to allow himself to snap at the man across from him, who had been so kind and had put up with Wildâs shortcomings. Wild clenched his hands once more before raising his hands to sign an apology.
âIf you say sorry I swear to Hylia I will get Legend to tie your hands together.â Sky stated in the most deadpan voice Wild had ever heard from the man. âI know that this is slower than you were expecting.â It was as if Sky could read his mind, and the thought almost made Wild shiver. âI was the same way. It took me months before I could talk to others outside my room. But yesterday you couldnât even pronounce the L sound, and now youâre making it. It will get smoother everyday, but it wonât if you push yourself over the edge and hurt your voice permanently.â
Wild bit his already abused lip, he hadnât really thought about thatâŠ
âBesides.â Skyâs voice was tinged with more cheer, âThereâs no rush! Weâre all getting better at sign, and youâre making progress. Weâll just work everyday and keep going.â Wild raised his hands, then lowered them once again. He really wanted to say sorry, sorry that Sky had to baby him as Wild dragged him down. However, Wild didnât really want to see if Skyâs threat was serious or notâŠ
âThank you. So much.â Wild settled for this instead. Thank you for being so patient, for spending hours with Wild every evening the past few days, for never snapping.
âOf course, Wild. You donât need to thank me twenty times a day.â Sky chuckled at Wildâs annoyed huff. It was not twenty times a day thank you very much. Sky hummed in thought before speaking once again. âWild, you know Iâm fine with us doing this in secret, I know you donât want others to know.â Wild could feel his stomach turn inside out. Were the others asking about their lessons? Was Sky going to make Wild tell them? âTime trusts us, and he makes sure the others stay away. He doesnât know.â Sky reassured at Wildâs panicked expression. âI just told him we needed to work together on some things. He probably thinks weâre sparring.â Wild relaxed.
âBut⊠Wild, maybe it would be better if you told someone?â Wild tilted his head in confusion. What would that help? âThis is frustrating for you, and I know youâre getting mad at yourself, I did too. Of course I donât mind listening, but it may help for someone else to know, in case you want to talk about your frustrations with someone else.â Wild thought about Skyâs idea as the man continued on.
The thought of the others knowing scared the shit out of him, if Wild was being honest. It was already embarrassing, and if they found out how long it was taking Wild to even get halfway through saying his own name? Yeah⊠that wouldnât go over well. They would know eventually though, Wild doubted he could just wake up one day and start verbally talking about whatâs for breakfast and expect everyone to get on board. Maybe he could convince them his lack of speech was a mass hallucination and that he had been talking the entire time? No⊠that probably wouldnât work.
Still, maybe Sky was right. He had never pushed Wild too hard, and he was always there. Even if Wild wasnât that talkative, even when signing, just having someone know what he was going through helped, even just a little.
But who else? So far Wind and Hyrule didn't seem to mind him. Four seemed nice, Legend didn't glare at him anymore like when he first met them, and Wind told Wild that Warriors was a very good listener. Time was definitely not an option, Wild wasn't proud of it, but he still practically ran away when it came to the two of them being alone. Something about the man just set Wild on edge.
One option stuck in Wild's mind though. Twilight.
The man had been infinitely kind to him. Not that the others had been hurtful or awful to him, but something about Twilight was a comfort, a light Wild began to subconsciously seek out. He drifted towards the older Link without thinking on long walks, and he tended to sit nearest to him at the campfire. Even Wolfie had continued to keep him company, although Wild put in more effort to hide his nightmares after his conversation with the man. Wild didn't want Twilight to feel the need to put his secret at risk just to help Wild with something the boy had been dealing with for years anyway. Twilight was just too kind for his own good.
Still⊠if Sky thought it was a good idea to tell someone else maybeâŠ
'Twilight can know.' Wild forced himself to sign before he over-thought things further.
"That's good, Wild." The boy felt himself relax at Sky's gentle reassurance. "Do you want me to tell him, or do you want to?" As usual, Sky left as many options as he could up to Wild, which the boy found himself thankful for.
As much as Wild wanted to avoid discussing his lessons to the others for the rest of his existence, if he told Twilight he had control over the conversation.
'I will.' Wild decided. 'Thank you.' Wild signed again as an afterthought.
"Twenty-one." Sky's smile turned more into a smirk, and Wild felt his shoulders lift in silent laughter.
Wild guessed this wasn't so bad.
~
It was only after Wild disappeared into the surrounding treeline that Sky allowed himself to rest his head in his hands, sighing softly. As much as he hoped Wild would tell someone else for the boyâs sake, Sky was secretly hoping he would tell someone just so Sky would have someone to discuss this with.
To say Sky was overwhelmed would be an understatement.
It wasnât Wildâs fault, the boy was trying his best and Sky didnât want him to think he was mad at him, it was the exact opposite actually. Sky was mad at himself.
He had vastly underestimated what these lessons would be. Sky didnât regret offering, not for a minute, especially with the progress Wild was making, no matter how slow it was. Wild was intelligent, Sky could tell that much from the way he jotted down notes of new Hyrules in his notebook. So Sky was sure that as a person who probably picked up new concepts quickly, spending an entire week on sounding out two letters was infuriating.
And Sky couldnât help, not really. Where Skyâs lack of speech in childhood seemed to stem from a deep rooted mental fear that froze his throat, Wildâs struggles seemed to be parts mental and physical. Sky believed their experiences would be similar enough he could help, but he was wrong. He didnât understand what Wild had been through, he didnât understand how the boyâs scars were so old on such a young body, and he didnât understand how to help him.
He was relying solely on his own experiences. Link was the first word he could say in front of Zelda, so it was the first word he was trying to teach Wild. But would a different word be easier? Did the scars around Wildâs throat prevent him from saying the sounds in his own name? Sky didnât even know.
Sky had been hoping they would land in a Hyrule that had a marketplace, some sort of bookstore that could give Sky more information. Even if it was about teaching children to speak, maybe it would help, even a little bit. Perhaps the other Links had information, but Wild wanted this to remain a secret and Sky would never betray his trust. Especially not after how hard it was to earn it in the first place. The fact that Wild was even speaking broken sounds in front of Sky spoke volumes about how much trust Sky would be breaking if he went against Wildâs wishes. No, he needed to do this on Wildâs terms. However, if Wild was able to tell Twilight, itâd be nice to have someone else to help the boy.
Sky really hoped Wild told him.
~
Looking around their newest temporary campsite, Wild was especially grateful that restlessness seemed to be a common trait they all shared, whether it be for something to do with their hands, or exploring the surrounding area. Wild let out a small sigh of relief when he spotted Twilight stoking the campfire. Alone.
Sky once joked that if Wild bit his lip anymore in the past week it would probably start to bleed, but Wild couldnât help it. Slowly, Wild approached the campfire and awkwardly sat opposite of the man shifting the ashes with a stick.
âHey, Wild.â Twilight greeted, looking up from the growing flames. âAre you and Sky done with, erm, whatever you guys do?â Wild couldnât help a small smile at that. He was thankful the others didnât pry, but watching them dance around the subject was always a little entertaining.
âFor today.â Wild signed. Twilight opened his mouth, before noticing Wildâs hands were still elevated. He had learned that meant the boy was thinking of his next words carefully, and Twilight always tried to let his thoughts run freely without interruptions. âCan IâŠâ Wild trailed off, and Twilight felt worry pool in his chest. âCan I tell you something?â Wild clenched his hands after he finished, which Twilight was pretty sure was a form of self comfort for the teen.
âYeah, Wild, of course. Anytime. I assume you want this to stay between us?â Twilight assured, noticing Wild was very quick to nod confirmation to the last part.
âAnd Sky.â Wild signed, and Twilight secretly hoped this was about what Wild and Sky had been doing every evening the past week or so. He never pried, none of the others did. Sky made it clear one night that this wasnât something to worry about, and Twilight trusted the other man, even if all Twilight wanted to do was to help.
And maybe he was curious, so what?
âIs this about what you guys have been⊠working on the past week?â Twilight prodded after a few minutes of Wild clenching and unclenching his fingers, relieved when Wild responded with a nod.
âYes.â Wild signed, and Twilightâs worry grew at how despondent Wild seemed. He decided that patience would be the best course of action, pushing Wild would most likely only make him shut down.
âHe⊠IâŠâ Wildâs hands couldnât seem to decide what to do.
âDo you want to write it down instead?â Twilight offered. Wildâs hand paused, and he nodded eagerly at the idea, swiftly standing up and racing to his bag where he put the journal Four gave him. He didnât need to use it as often for communication anymore, able to fingerspell any larger or unknown words, but after Four made it clear he wouldnât need it back, Wild had taken to writing down random thoughts and facts about the new Hyrules he encountered. Not only did he enjoy it, but he would be able to show Zelda later along with pictures on his slate.
Wild missed Twilightâs relieved smile that his idea stuck. While he was used to comforting and helping the children in his village, Wild was not only older, but was much different from the children in Ordon. So far, Twilight had been relying on a combination of how Time gave him advice, and how Twilight comforted Colin. It had so far seemed to work out well enough.
Wild took his place across the fire, and all of his nerves seemed to return full force, causing Twilight to frown. Whatever Wild wanted to tell him, Twilight wondered why it seemed so bad. If Sky knew, it couldnât be dangerous, right?
Wildâs hands shook as he wrote out what he wanted to say, and Twilight didnât push him. When Wild was done, he hesitated, as if this would be his last chance to leave. Twilight really hoped that didnât happen, he really wanted Wild to trust him. Finally, Wild held out the journal, passing it around the fire.
Twilight had to resist snatching it away before Wild could change his mind. As Twilight grabbed the journal, Wild pulled his hand away as if the pages had burned him. He looked like he was about to flee any second. Twilight steeled himself for whatever his eyes would see on these pages, knowing that any sign of a negative reaction would probably result in a missing Link. After mentally preparing himself, Twilight read the small scrawled sentence in the middle of the page, deciphering the shaky ink.
Sky is teaching me how to speak. Verbally.
That⊠was not at all what Twilight was expecting. At all. He didnât really know what he was expecting, but it certainly wasnât this. Out of his peripherals, he saw Wild start to attempt an escape. It seemed Twilight took too long for his response.
âWait, wait.â Twilight held out his hand as if he were trying to talk to a scared animal. âIâm sorry I was just surprised. Thatâs great, Wild.â Wild slowly settled back into his spot on the ground, both boys had no idea what to say. One worrying thought, however, was stuck in Twilightâs mind.
âWild, that's amazing, but you know we donât need you to talk. Weâre all fine with you signing. You donât need to do this for us.â
Twilight watched as Wildâs eyes widened a bit, and the teen raised his hands, trying to convey his thoughts in a way that would be understood.
Wild liked sign, he thought it was pretty and intricate. But Goddess, he wanted to talk so bad. It was his fault, he shouldnât have let himself get swept up in all his silly fantasies of finally being able to speak out loud.
Swept up in fantasies of chatting with Wind, being able to answer the youngerâs questions honestly and in detail, there was so much more he was desperate to say.
Swept up in the fantasies of arriving in Hateno, visiting Zelda once more. Approaching her normally, raising his hands and talking instead. He longed to see her look of shock. He would never again be her stoic knight, but perhaps he could remind her of her good memories.
Fantasies of just⊠opening his mouth and saying his thoughts. Being able to tell the others about his Hyrule when they walked down its paths again. Telling them about the stable system, and the treasure he finds in caves and ruins, and the different regions his Hyrule held.
âI want toâ. Wild signed, trying to show Twilight that he wasnât just doing this because he thought the others were shallow and impatient.
He wanted this, he wanted it so bad.
âWell then Iâm really proud of ya!â Twilight grinned, apparently seeing Wildâs true determination. âIâm sure it wasnât easy reaching out.â Wild felt his cheeks burn a bright red.
Proud? Of what? Despite Wildâs inner crisis, Twilight continued on.
âLet me know if you guys need anything. I could try to help or just help keep the others away, just let me know.â Wild didnât know how to respond to that, so he just signed a heartfelt âthank youâ instead.
âHowâs it going? The lessons.â Twilight clarified at Wildâs confused look. The question just caused Wildâs shoulder to sag again.
âNot good.â Wild signed.
âWhy?â Twilight coaxed.
âIâm not good at it.â Wild explained, not meeting Twilightâs eyes.
âI doubt itâs that simple.â Twilight realized he would probably have to talk to Sky to find out what was really happening.
âCanât even say my name.â Wild huffed and Twilight winced at how tired the teen sounded, even in that small noise. It was obvious he was trying hard, and felt like he was getting nowhere.
âYou only started a week ago, Wild. Iâm pretty sure thatâs not a lot of time to already be speaking entire words.â Twilight tried his best to assure Wild, but without the full story it was almost impossible. âHey.â Twilight gently got Wildâs attention, the boy looking up at him again. âI was serious. Anything you or Sky need, and Iâll take care of it. Okay?â
âOkayâ Wild signed after some hesitance. âThank youâ. Twilight opened his mouth to inquire further about the lessons, when a small figure came barreling into camp.
âI forgot my water.â Wind explained at Twilightâs raised eyebrow, racing over to his bag. âOh! Hi Wild!â Wind greeted enthusiastically, looking up from his bag to see Wild give a small wave back. At Windâs victorious smile, Twilight got an idea.
Carefully behind the teenâs back, Twilight gestured to Wild, jerking his head to the treeline. Thankfully, Wind seemed to get the message.
âWild! Do you want to come back with me? Hyrule and I were going to play a game, we havenât decided which one yet but we got Four and Legend to join too!â Wind offered excitedly, and Twilight bit back a laugh at that image. Four probably joined by his own free will, perhaps feeling a bit restless. Legend, however, was almost certainly dragged. Probably by Hyrule, they all knew the soft spot the older had for the brunette.
Wild glanced back at Twilight, his head tilting in a silent question.
âGo on, sounds fun.â Twilight encouraged, feeling warmth build in his chest when Wild nodded hesitantly and rose from the ground. Wind resisted the urge to drag the older teen behind him, and they both eventually disappeared into the trees. Twilight was glad the others felt they could just play games sometimes. Sure they usually had to do with sparring or training, but it was nice they felt they could relax, even just a bit. Twilight may have even joined them, but he had more pressing matters.
~
Twilight walked in the direction he had seen Sky and Wild travel when they began their lesson. Time knew where the two went for safety reasons, but Twilight didnât want to involve him if he didnât have to.
Eventually he noticed a clearing to his left. He carefully approached the break in the trees, still wary of monsters lurking around. Fortunately, there was only a familiar sailcloth. Unfortunately, the man in said sailcloth had his head in his hands, obviously upset.
âSky?â Twilight called, the man whipped around.
âOh, hi Twi. Did uh⊠Did Wild-?â Sky cut off, making a circular motion with his hand.
âNothing.â Sky winced at how unconving he sounded. Twilight raised a single eyebrow and the message was clear. Really? Youâre gonna try that?
âHeâs come far, but he doesnât feel like it. It hurts to see him struggling so much. I thought I could help, but our situations are so differentâŠâ Sky let out a resigned sigh.
âYeah⊠he didnât seem too happy when we talked.â Twilight remembered the tired little huff the boy let escape his damaged vocal chords. Sure the scars on his neck were bad, buit Twilight didnât realize how bad, not until that night weeks ago anyway.
âHe tried to talk to me, the third night he was with us.â Skyâs wide eyes made contact with Twilightâs dark cobalt. âHe had a nightmare, tur-â Twilightâs eyes widened, stumbling over the words that were about to pour out of his mouth. He was really about to spill his guts about Wolfie, he wanted to smack himself. âI, uh, I was on watch, and I heard him. He tried to talk after he woke up, I donât think he knew I was there.â He lied carefully. âHe couldnât even- Hylia he couldnât even make a syllable. It was just so⊠garbled.â Twilight didn;t think heâd ever forget the haunted look in the youngerâs eyes that night. âDonât tell him or anyone I said that.â Twilight warned as an afterthought.
âI wonât. Still thatâs⊠I want him to be able to talk if he wants, I want him to have that opportunity. Iâm not the right person to teach him I donât know how.â Sky rushed out.
âAnd who else will do it?â Twilight questioned, and Sky froze for a moment. âI mean he didnât seem that close to anyone in his Hyrule. Maybe Zelda, or many he has friends, but we donât know how long this quest will take. Truth is, I donât think there is a right person to do this. I think we just have to do it.â Twilight put extra emphasis on the âweâ part.
âIâll tell you the same thing I told Wild.â Twilight let his voice soften. âI donât know how to help, but I will. He didnât seem overly opposed to me being here for lessons, or maybe he didnât listen to that part. Or I could do something else. Weâll figure it out.â
âYouâre right, Iâm sorry. I just donât want to be the reason he gives up altogether.â Sky spoke, although he seemed calmer now.
âDoes Wild really seem like the type of person to give up?â Sky cracked a smile at Twilightâs tone.
âYeah, you all can be stubborn asses.â Skyâs smile grew at Twilightâs offended look.
âYou guys? Like youâre not included in that! If anything youâre the most stubborn of us all!â
~
It was that night that Twilight finally understood.
He was ready to support Wild in whatever he wanted to do, whether that meant signing or talking. But it wasnât until that night around the fire he understood why Wild wanted to talk. Why Wild would be so determined to achieve that goal.
He didnât get it, until he saw Wind chat animatedly to the others about the game they had made up to help their aim.
He didnât get it, until he saw the wistful look Wild sent Wind as the boy continued his ramblings.
Twilight understood now, and heâd be damned if he didnât do everything he could to get that wistful gaze out of the youngerâs eyes.
Could you maybe do a story when Wild experiences a flashback near the other links?
Thank you for the request @dawn-wild-star !!!
To those who saw my WIP game tag, this isnât the same fic Iâm sorry this one just got done first.
This turned out with more Time & Twilight & Wild fluff and angst than I intended.
TW: Panic Attack
Blank
Time watched the various groups of Links from his place leaning against a tree. He was often the one who would need to keep the group moving, not that it was hard with no many antsy Spirits of Courage, but they had some leeway to camp early today. Time continued to play soft melodies through the ocarina at his lips. He couldnât name the tune, he simply played whatever came to mind.Â
The Links had arrived somewhere on the surface of Sky's Hyrule, the young man hoped to make it to Skyloft in two days to see his Zelda once again. Time truly hoped whatever force opened the portals let Sky have time at his home with his Zelda and his friends. Hylia knows the young man deserves it, all the boys do.
Four, Hyrule, Sky and Wind were all sparring before it turned into an odd game of tag. Time didnât really understand the rules, but he didnât think the boys playing did either.
Twilight and Warriors were down by a small stream the group had found, washing Epona and chatting idly.
Legend sat near Wild as the younger flipped the variety of vegetables and rice within the simple pot on the campfire. Wild said he couldnât do much without a larger pot found in his Hyrule, but even what he could do in his portable pot was always amazing.
Time didnât know what the two were talking about, choosing not to eavesdrop, but the two looked content to just chat while Wild cooked. Time had to admit, he was always excited for dinner now that Wild was around. Not only was the hero amazing at cooking, it was a hobby he enjoyed as well.
Time took the lull in action to simply relax and observe the world around him.
âUhhh⊠Time?â Legend called out, and it wasnât the boyâs calling out that worried him, it was the hesitance hidden in his voice. âI think that⊠thing is happening again.â He gestured to Wild. Looking closer Time noticed Wild was staring at something. Glancing over, he could see the Master Sword, leaned carefully against a mossy rock.Â
âWild?â Legend questioned. âYou gonna keep staring and burn our food?â Legend hesitantly reached up to Wildâs shoulder and shook gently. Time quickly walked over to check on their cook, expecting Wild to flinch out of zoning out as he often did with a touch or shake.
For a moment, nothing happened. Time and Legend were so focused on the lack of response, they didnât notice Wildâs right hand slip, right onto the edge of the pot. It only took a few seconds for them to notice, but those few seconds allowed for the side of Wildâs hand to smoulder and burn.
âShit!â Legend cursed, swiftly pulling Wildâs hand away from the fire. The burn was already starting to blister. âI⊠I didnât know moving him wouldâŠâ Legend trailed off in an unusual sign of surprise and guilt.
âItâs not your fault.â Time assured as he gently took Wildâs hand. The boy hadnât even flinched, still staring off. Time couldnât see a hint of life in the boyâs eyes. Time didnât want to admit how hard it was looking at Wildâs normally expressive face, now completely blank. âI didnât notice either.â Time glanced up from Wildâs hurt hand, and into Legendâs icy eyes, not liking the guilt he saw swirling in them. âLegend, Iâm serious.â Time stared into Legendâs eyes.Â
âStop looking at me and take care of him.â Legend scoffed, and Time sighed.
âPup!â Time called loud enough for the young man to hear from the creek. Carefully Time dragged Wild away slightly from the fire, making sure no stray limbs touched the flames.
Time heard rustling and fast approaching steps.
âTime?â Twilight called out, rushing over at Timeâs urgent tone. Time assumed Warriors would bring back Epona. Time simply gestured to Wild, Twilight knew more about this. âCub?â Twilight asked, kneeling down besides him. At first he thought the boy was upset or hurt, but this reaction, or lack thereof, spoke otherwise. âHow long has he not been responding?â Twilight asked Time, eyes falling on Wildâs injured hand. âAnd did he burn himself?â Legend looked away at this.
âIt was an accident.â Time replied, refusing to blame Legend when he had no malintent. âHe hasnât been responding for a few minutes now.â
âIs everything okay?â Four called as his group rushed in from the woods.
âEverything is fine.â Time called, loud enough for Warriors to hear down near the creek. âWe think Wild is having another memory.â Time ended with a small question, receiving a nod from Twilight. The four Links all crowded around Wild to see for themselves.Â
âDonât crowd him too much.â Twilight warned. âHe could wake up anytime, and we donât want him panicking.â The others backed up slightly, murmuring small apologies.
âWhat happened to his hand?â Hyrule asked, noticing the bright red skin that Time was cradling in his hands.Â
âIt got burned, I was just about to ask you boys to get bandages and water.â Time gently held out Wildâs hand for Hyrule to look at.
âI got it!â Sky called as he ran off to their pile of supplies. Hyrule began healing Wildâs hand without any prompting, allowing a small amount of Life to filter itself into Wild. Twilight heard more rustling, and turned to see Warriors and a newly rinsed Epona coming up from the creek.Â
âThanks for finishing washing her.â Twilight called as Warriors hitched Epona, giving her plenty of leeway to move around.
âNo problem. Whatâs going on?â He asked the group gathered around their cook.
âMemory.â Legend grunted out.Â
âRice is burning.â Warriors called out. As worried as he was for Wild, Warriors felt it his job to make sure everything else was alright so the others could tend to him. Carefully removing the rice from the fire, Warriors scrunched his nose. âThereâs no saving that.â The captain said as he set the rice aside to cool.Â
âWildâs gonna be pissed.â Wind joked, looking worriedly at Wild.
âHeâll be okay, we just need to treat the burn.â Twilight assured, noticing Warriors shift at the mention of a burn. Just then, Sky returned with the requested supplies, handing them to Time. Time opened the container of water, preparing to pour it and clean Wildâs burn.
âHeat up the water first.â Warriors snatched up the container, bringing it over to the fire.
âWonât that hurt?â Wind tilted his head.
âItâll take the sting out.â Warriors explained. âI wonât boil it or anything. Trust me, Iâve got plenty of burns.â Warriors held up his arm with his Volga burn scar and winked. The others looked at Hyrule.
âItâs not open or extreme, so we should be fine.â Hyrule shrugged, trusting the captain's knowledge.
âTry to hurry, I donât really want him to snap out of it at the same time weâre pouring hot water on him.â Twilight spoke while placing his hand on Wildâs other shoulder.Â
âDo we know how long this will last?â Four asked Twilight, who shook his head.
âNo, it could last from a few minutes to a few hours. I just hope itâs a pleasant one.â Twilight murmured that last part mostly to himself, but the others had heard. It set the group on edge that they truly had no idea what was going through Wildâs head, no matter what, his face remained blank.
Hyrule finished healing Wildâs hand as much as he could and put one finger under Wildâs nose.
âHis breathing is completely normal.â Hyrule marveled, expecting some sort of stutter, or quickness, any sort of irregularity. But his breathing suggested he was merely asleep.
âThe best way to describe it is heâs dreaming.â Twilight suggested, not quite sure how to explain what Wild was going through.Â
âMore like a coma sitting up.â Hyrule mused.
âSo⊠he canât feel anything?â Legend asked, and Twilight noticed the careful hope in his voice.
âHeâll feel it when he wakes up.â Twilight looked down at Wildâs burn. âWhich is why I want to hurry and treat it.
âCalm down cowboy, itâs almost hot enough.â Warriors rolled his eyes from where he was heating up the container of water by the fire. Although he too hoped Wild wouldnât âwake upâ before they finished treating his burns.Â
Whatever Wild was going through, it scared Warriors, not that he would say it out loud. There was no reason to panic the others. He had seen his soldiers, his brothers in arms, have flashbacks similar to these, but they never lasted this long. They also had some sort of trigger, something that brought back memories. Sometimes they were loud noises, sometimes they were the sight of blood or a wound, sometimes a yell or a panicked order, but they always showed it. Their breath would quicken, they would panic, something. They could also feel what was going on around them to some extent. Wild though, Wild was just⊠gone. What triggered whatever Wild was going through? It was as if he wasnât in his body. Perhaps he wasnât.
Warriors lifted the bottle from the fire, feeling the side. Perfect. Hot, but not scalding.
âItâs ready.â Warriors called lowly, turning around to the group loosely surrounding Wild. âCan I see his hand?â Warriors asked Hyrule, who still held Wildâs partially healed burn. Hyrule nodded and gently passed it over.Â
âThis will hurt.â Warriors looked over to Twilight, silently asking permission to continue. Warriors knew that in reality, he probably didnât have to ask Twilightâs permission to do what would make WIld feel better in the long run, but it felt right. Especially when Twilight knew far more about the state Wild was in than the rest of them. Twilight nodded at him.
Carefully, Warriors poured a small amount of water on the burn. Really it would be better to do it all at once and get it over with, but he had to check. Could Wild even feel it? His thoughts were confirmed when Wild didnât even twitch.
âDamn heâs really out of it.â Warriors mumbled, continuing to pour the hot water. The stunned silence he was met with confirmed his statement. After the water was poured, Sky handed him a cloth to dry it. Warriors gently padded the burn, just because Wild couldnât feel it didnât mean Warriors was going to be careless. Besides, what if he could feel it and he just couldnât express it? Warriors steered his mind away from that.
âBandage?â Warriors reached a hand out. Before Sky could place the bandage in his hand, Legend stopped him.Â
âHere.â Legend took the bandage, taking a potion out of his smaller bag. He poured a small amount of potion onto the bandage before handing it to Warriors, who nodded in thanks.Â
âThere.â Warriors said as he finished carefully bandaging Wildâs hand. âItâll be good as new in no time.âÂ
âWhat do⊠What do we do now?â Wind glanced at Wildâs expressionless face. He looked so closed off, and yet so open at the same time. Usually the group would be thankful at Wild not hiding his expressions behind a hood or a placed emotion, but this was different. This was just wrong.
âWe wait.â Twilight sighed. The rest of the Links deflated, none of them enjoying the idea of not doing anything to help. âBut we should probably move him.â Twilight said, glancing towards the fire.
âIs that a good idea?â Four questioned, and Twilight nodded.
âIâve gotten him to sit down before and it was alright.â Twilight stated, easily bending down and scooping up Wild. Still there was no reaction from the prone figure, still head rolling onto Twilightâs shoulder.Â
âHeâd kill you if he knew you did that.â Warriors smirked.
âThatâs why no oneâs going to tell him.â Twilight threatened with a glare. He walked over to a log further from the fire. This really was the perfect camping place, logs spread everywhere and carefully placed trees.Â
Twilight slowly knelt down and leaned Wild against the log, ignoring the shuffling Links in the background who didnât know what to do with themselves. To be honest, Twilight was grateful to have something to do for the time being. After adjusting Wild to stay against the log, Twilight adjusted the boyâs limbs, straightening his legs slightly so he wouldnât be sore later. He had no idea how long this would last, but he had a feeling they would be in it for the long haul. He felt a presence behind him, glancing up he saw it was Time.Â
âIs there anything else we can do?â Time asked softly, trying not to look into Wildâs empty eyes. Twilight shook his head sadly.
âNot that I know of. Just be here when he comes back.â
âWe can do that.â Time clapped his hand on Twilightâs back, sitting on another log a short distance away.Â
âThereâs no saving dinner.â Legend glanced in disgust at the burnt meal.Â
âWe can stick with rations tonight.â Time stated, hearing no complaints. Sure they were all used to great food on the road, but as long as WIld was alright they would go back to rations in an instant.
~
âHeâs⊠really vulnerable.â Hyrule observed awkwardly, glancing at the prone form of his friend, still not even a twitch as afternoon began to turn to early evening.
âI was thinking that too.â Sky agreed.
âWhat if a Yiga, or a monster, or something just carried him off while he was like this. In his Hyrule how did he survive this?â Wind asked.
âThereâs no point in focusing on what ifs.â Time chided. âHeâs here now and thatâs whatâs important.âÂ
âWell yeah. But what if he wanders off a trail and this happens?â Legend crossed his arms. âAnd some monster comes by and just gobbles him up-â
âLegend!â Sky interrupted.
âWhat? Iâm not the only one thinking of it.â Legend defended.Â
âNow is not the time for this conversation.â Twilight spoke up. âLetâs get through this one first, itâs only fair for Wild to be aware of this conversation.â
âShouldnât he have been up by now?â Four too glanced at Wild, still not moving a muscle next to Twilight.Â
âYeah, but I donât know what else to do.â Twilight sighed.
âWhat happens when he comes back?â Warriors asked Twilight.
âHe just kinda slowly comes to. He sometimes seems a little tired but thatâs all.â Twilight answered all of their questions the best he could, although he himself didnât know all the answers.Â
âSo he doesnât⊠panic?â Warriors asked again, and Twilight wondered what the captain was thinking about.Â
âNot usually, he sometimes seems sad.â The reason Wild was sad didnât need to be explained. The others could imagine remembering your life from 100 years ago, a life you would never have again, would be painful. With no more questions the group fell into idle conversation once more. There were no grand stories or competitions or comparisons, just small exchanged words as they waited for Wild to wake up.
About 15 minutes later, their waiting ended.Â
With a heaving breath, as if escaping from the claws of a monster, Wild awoke.
âWild? You back with us?â Twilight turned around to meet panicked blue eyes. Wild curled in on himself, bringing his knees up to his chest in self comfort, hands reaching to clutch his hair. His panic obviously overshadowed the pain he would feel in his hand.Â
âWild, Link, itâs okay.â Twilight sprung up and placed himself in front of Wild. âYour name is Link, we call you Wild.â Twilight reminded gently. âYouâre safe, youâre just sitting near a campfire.â Wildâs breaths began to slow.
âTwiâŠâ Wildâs voice spoke up, rougher than it had been for a long time.
âYeah Cub. You okay?â Twilight looked into Wildâs panicked eyes, and the answer was apparent.
âI-the M-Master Sword it chose me I-â, the entire group looked on, sadness in their eyes as Wild panicked.
âCub, just breath for a minute. Donât think about anything else, just focus on me.â Twilight told the boy gently, slowing down his breathing so Wild could copy. Whatever he had seen, they could sort it out in a minute. Right now he just needed to calm down. Twilight had never seen him so panicked after a memory.  Â
âH-He⊠I donât understandâŠâ Wild breathed out heavily.Â
âCub, shh, itâs okay.â Twilight leaned closer, carefully placing a hand on Wildâs shoulder, frowning and pulling his hand back when he shrunk away.Â
âI-I didnât⊠w-want it⊠I donât know whyâŠâ Wild was mostly mumbling to himself at this point, and none of the other Links knew what to do.
âWild, please just breathe.â Twilight practically begged, glancing around for help no one knew how to give. Wild continued to mumble, hands tightening their grip in his hair despite the bandaging, desperate to ground to one of the realities he was currently between.Â
âCub.â Twilight called softly, placing a hand on Wildâs shoulder again, hoping to help ground his protege. Wild tensed once again, but Twilight didnât let go. âYouâre here with me and the other Links. Weâre in Skyâs Hyrule on the surface, itâs the evening and weâre sitting and talking.â
âDaytimeâŠâ Wild mumbled, confused.
âIt was daytime.â Twilight confirmed. âBut itâs evening now.â A shaky bandaged hand released strands of hair and gripped Twilightâs hand on his shoulder.Â
âReal?â Wild murmured, mostly to himself but Twilight answered.
âWeâre real. That was just a memory, Cub.â Twilight soothed, scooting to sit beside Wild once again, letting the younger take in his surroundings. Wild looked at all the different Links faces, studying them closely. The rest of the Links tried to wipe their horrified expressions off their faces, Sky going as far as to awkwardly wave when Wildâs eyes met his. Twilight noticed Wildâs confused glance at the bandages on his right hand.
âYou got burned, it was an accident. Youâll feel better soon.â Twilight promised. Wild only nodded slightly, putting all his trust in Twilightâs words.
âThey took me away. I pulled the sword and-and they didnât even give me a chance to say goodbye.â Wild whispered shakily, eyes still far off, flashes of fighting against knights as they pulled him away. Twilight wrapped his arm fully around Wild, loose as to not trap him. After some silence, Wild latched onto Twilight, throwing one arm across the olderâs back, and the other gripping his pelt. Both hands held on desperately, wanting more than anything to anchor himself. Wild felt Twilightâs body wrap around him, the familiar warmth and smell of pine grounding him further.
âCareful of your hand.â Twilight warned softly, but WIld either didnât hear him or didnât care.Â
âZelda. In a memory she said my father was a knight. Was he there? Why would he let them⊠There was someone, someone important I never saw again. Why did they take me away?â Wild shivered. Later he would be embarrassed at how thoroughly shaken he was, but right now he was scared and confused and barely knew where he was. His world was crashing down on him and it felt like Twilight was the only one keeping him from tumbling down.
âKeep breathing, Cub. Iâm here.â Twilight soothed again, looking up as Time approached carefully, obviously not sure if he should interject.
"Time?" Wild looked up slightly from Twilight's shoulder.
"Yeah Cub, we're all here. You're safe now."
"Why did he let them take me? Do fathers do that?â Wild sounded so lost, and Time froze. He wanted to say he didnât know, he never had a father. But he saw Malon and Talon, and really him and Talon had grown closer over the years. If Malon was being taken away to a castle to ultimately save the world? Would Talon let them take her? Would he be able to fight off an entire army that would just keep coming? No, but he would try. The truth was, Time didnât know Wildâs father⊠but neither did Wild.
âWild.â Time softly gained the boyâs attention. âWhat happened to you wasnât fair and Iâm sorry. Even if the world needed saving, they shouldn't have sacrificed the wellbeing of a child to do it. None of it was your fault, and it shouldn't have happened." Wild buried his head into Twilight's neck once more.
"I didn't think I'd really pull it." Wild whispered. "I thought I could try it and go home. I never went home, Twi." Twilight felt his neck grow wet with tears, Wild wasn't outright sobbing, yet his tears ran freely. Twilight doubted he was entirely coherent after a memory like that.
"I'm sorry Wild." Twilight whispered, looking at the other Links, all clearly upset that they had nothing to do to help. Twilight hesitated, before speaking. "You're home now. It's not the same I know but you'll always have a home with us." The other Links nodded determinedly.
"HomeâŠ" Wild spoke from his neck.
"Yeah, Cub."Â Twilight finally felt Wild's grip lessen, he glanced up at Time, looking for confirmation.
"Yeah he's asleep." Time stated.
"He didn't fall asleep. He passed out." Legend pointed out.
"Hopefully heâll be more aware when he wakes.â Time told the group.
âI knew you all were young when you pulled the sword butâŠâ Twilight trailed off, not knowing what to say.
âWe all were too young, no one is denying that.â Warriors spoke softly.Â
âThey just⊠took him away? Forever?â Sky spoke in disbelief.
âSounds like it.â Four nodded, eyes dazed and lost in thought.
âItâs too late to change the past.â Time spoke, voice rough and full of regret. âBut Twilight is right. We have each other now.â The other Links looked a little comforted, but they still dwelled on what they just saw.Â
âWill he be like that again when he wakes up again?â Wind asked, sad at the thought of seeing his friend like that once more.
âI donât know. I donât think so, Iâm hoping some time asleep will help his mind reset.â Twilight said as he shifted Wild to be more comfortable for the both of them.
âShould we set up his bed roll?â Warriors offered.
âI donât think he should wake up alone.â Twilight told him, trying to look down at the boy curled into him. Wild wouldnât really be waking up alone per say, being surrounded by other heros and all, but Twilight didnât want him to wake in a panic without Twilight knowing right away.Â
âI donât think heâs gonna let go anyways.â Legend smirked, but it didnât quite reach his eyes.
âI know you all probably arenât tired, but we should decide watches and think about getting to bed soon, or at least settle in.â Time made sure to look pointedly at Twilight.
âIf he doesnât feel up to travel, we shouldnât make him.â Sky spoke up. WHile he was eager to get to his home, it wasnât worth it if Wild would be miserable.Â
âWeâll have to see how he is tomorrow before we make plans.â Time agreed, before turning to Twilight. âYou need help getting him settled?â Time offered.
âNah, I got him.â Twilight told him, attempting to get up. But between Wildâs octorak limbs, the unsteady terrain, and the odd position, he barely got off the ground before plopping back down.
âUhh maybe a little.â
~
By the time they got Twilightâs bedroll down, Wild was still clinging to him in his deep slumber.
âHe really isnât gonna let you go.â Four joked with a strained smile.
âWhen you donât know whatâs real, you look for something to cling to.â Legend spoke with an obvious air of experience, eyes distant.Â
âI just hope heâs alright.â Skyâs concerned frown hadnât lifted.
âHe will be. Perhaps a bit of misplaced embarrassment and guilt, but we can sort through everything in the morning.â Warriors stated confidently.
With Warriors as the first watch, and the sun long past set, the group settled in. Not many tried to sleep right away, some turned to their quieter hobbies like writing or carving. Many glancing at Wild often to ensure he was still alright. Time helped Twilight and Wild settle into the olderâs bedroll.Â
âDo you need anything, Pup?â Time asked, covering both boys with a blanket and ignoring Twilightâs protests to âstop babying himâ.Â
âI think weâre fine.â Twilight said back.
âI asked if you needed something.â Time squinted his eye.
âIâm okay, Time, really. Just worried.â Twilight replied, more convincing this time around.
âI know, Pup, but if Wild isn;t alone, you arenât either. This isnât all on you.â Time looked into Twilightâs eyes, seeing a mess of emotions swirling in his dark blue eyes.Â
âThanks, Time.â This round the message got through better, and time was grateful.Â
âAnytime.â Instead of moving away, Time settled on a nearby log, keeping all the boys clear in his sight.
âTime?â Twilight called.
âYes, Pup?â Time checked over the two once again.
âThe same goes for you.â Twilight told him, referring to their previous conversation. ââThis isnât all on you.ââ Twilight smirked as he threw Timeâs words back at him.Â
âThanks, Pup.â Time smirked at Twilightâs sass.
He wondered where Twilight got that from.Â

Time: Wow. I finally have the chance to relax!
The Universe: Lol sike.
I know Wild being taken away doesnât quite match with BOTW canon/AoC canon, but I thought it was an interesting idea to explore.Â
I enjoy how this turned out, so this may be a part of my Hero of Wild series one day, but this is pretty far ahead of where that series is right now.
Iâm also probably going to have to rearrange my timeline and rewrite some stuff to make sense, but that will come later :)
Also Iâm not saying to pour hot water on burns, that's just something my old fashioned cowboy family says, and something a lot of people in ye olden days did. It helps with sunburns and minor burns, not so much major burns.
