August 25, 2025 - Red-cowled Widowbird (Euplectes laticauda) Found in parts of eastern Africa, these widowbirds live in grasslands, shrublands, wetlands, forests, and cultivated areas. Foraging alone, in small groups, or sometimes in large flocks, they are thought to feed on seeds, nectar, small berries, and insects, like the closely related Red-collared Widowbird. Males perform flight displays with their long tails spread and usually breed with two or three females. Females do the majority or all of the nest construction, building oval structures from grass, or in some areas reusing the nests of cisticolas. They incubate clutches of two to four eggs and feed the chicks alone.
