 I’ve been on and off of Tumblr a lot over the past couple of years.  I’ve had multiple conversations with people who have said: “It’s just not the same anymore”.  I have nodded my head in agreement and carried on with my day each time, not really stopping to think what this really means.

I’m honoured to have been a part of the writing community on Tumblr since 2013 when 6-word sentences still classified as poetry and hashtags were still a blurry subject.  I wrote multiple pieces of social experiments under the guise of alt lit poetry and fell in love with the words of hundreds of fellow poets.  Every year I wrote a little less and a little less, alt lit became forward and social experiments became nothing. 

The deactivation of accounts by genius wordsmiths made it clear that eventually, this community will cease to exist.  It hasn’t.  Instead, it has been infiltrated by so many we once considered outsiders which, in its entirety, isn’t a bad thing - it’s just different.  

Recently I’ve found myself thinking back to the heydays and reminiscing about poems and pieces of prose written by those I considered family.  

A week ago we lost a member of this family, someone who eagerly encouraged the writing of others and often joked about camping out in others’ words, making hearts rain like it was a statement of confident acknowledgement each time.  I never got the chance to say how much I appreciated it, and now I never will. 

So yes, maybe it’s not the same - it won’t ever be the same without these poets who helped to shape this community, but we can still treat each other well; encourage each other, care for each other and make hearts rain in acknowledgement of each others’ craft.
