Re: your vampire AU: When I'm on AO3, I can see the green checkmark that indicates your fic is complete, but it still says "chapters 1/2". It kind of confused me, and I didn't realize the second chapter was there until I actually clicked on your fic, scrolled to the end, and clicked the "next chapter" button. Maybe others think it's not complete, and that's affecting the hits/kudos? Just thought I'd let you know, in case you want to look into it. The fandom attrition is real too, alas.

huh, I hadn't noticed that. I think I've fixed it now. I wonder if it's related to the thing where publish date is tied to the date you make a draft rather than the date you hit post on (which can cause a bunch of issues) or if it's just because I posted both chapters together too quickly or something. the post dates were odd to start with and I think they got reset to today when I fixed it oops. really wish they'd fix that draft/post date bug.

and yeah, the shoot fandom is super quiet and average kudo count for shoot fics has gone way down (I've seen people complaining that that's a larger issue for all fandoms, even active ones, but I don't have enough data to confirm). and on the one hand I prefer a quieter fandom since the number of assholes is greatly decreased, and on the other no one wants to feel like they're talking to an empty room.

I've got another entire new shoot au written that I'm going to start posting at some point and another thing I'm working on, so I haven't stopped writing, but it does get harder to keep being enthusiastic about writing and posting more.

#mp #asks #and a lot of people only read complete stuff #which is another problem #one of the main reasons given by authors for not completing stuff #(besides life stuff getting in the way)#is lack of engagement which is perceived as lack of interest #the hits count means nothing #(also think that it would be worth trying a system where kudo counts were made private #and potentially replaced with other sorting methods #to decrease the trend of only the top kudo-ed fics getting hits in the long-term #and thus perpetuating that they will be the only ones read by most people #the drop off on kudos over the first two pages of a ship is mind blowing and that's across all ships #I did a bunch of data comparisons of that once because I'm a nerd #and it's nuts and consistent across fandoms #and it's ultimately bad for writers imo #and I say that as someone who does have a fic on the first page of the shoot fics sorted by kudos #anyway...end rant)#I went back and checked all my other fics since there's a decent number where I posted a complete multi-chapter fic all at once #and this seems to have been the only one to have that weird chapter count #must have hit some random bug #next time I'll count to ten before posting the second chapter

Just got my preliminary program for SOT and I’m disappointed to report that of 10 featured lectures over the course of the conference, only 2 feature female speakers.

Unpopular opinion time: I think that m/f pairings in general get put on the sidelines because people think they’re ‘boring’ (which suggests a frustration with heteronormativity rather than m/f ships specifically) and because they want to see more of the often fan-created m/m ships, and sometimes even f/f ships (though more uncommon, that; it’s more likely we’ll see m/m).

When the fact is, people are ignoring healthy f/m relationships that deserve to be loved by fandom just as much as they give attention to m/m ships that aren’t portrayed healthily, or are given far less interaction and demand more thought on the behalf of the fan shipping them.

As said by others - f/m ships aren’t the problem, heteronormativity is, and the people who call healthy f/m ships ‘boring’ may be fine in their opinions as individuals, as everyone is entitled to their own, but as a large group there is clearly something wrong when a healthy canon pairing gets far less attention than it should.
