Fantasy worldbuilding idea: for which races is this the case?
[Nonhuman] Primate mothers only develop enlarged breasts during ovulation, whereas human females have them from puberty on.
Or maybe some only after pregnancy instead.
How would they think of humans in response?
on another note: to make elf biology weirder unless going with “dying race” thing:
Female flies, fish, and birds can make new eggs cells
Orcs, if we go with Tolkien technologically advanced engineered soldier race rather than awful “noble savage” depictions, might have serums or medicines that allow a nonpregnant orc, male or female to lactate in an emergency with startving infants , and the babies thankfully switching to solid foods quickly
