Parade Sword from Innsbruck, Austria dated to 1440 on display at the Weltmuseum in Vienna, Austria
This royal parade sword was made for Frederick III, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Italy. The sword represents these dual roles as the blade is Italian and the hilt is from Innsbruck. However the use of Holy Roman Imperial iconography on the blade, like the single-headed black eagle of the Empire, perhaps shows Fredericks priorities.
Frederick's reign has received both praise and critique from historians as he was a great patron of the arts but also struggled to control the extremities of the Holy Roman Empire. He and his wife Eleanor of Portugal were some of the few Medieval monarchs who supported Jewish communities in their kingdoms.
