@weirdbabs ive considered that! it feels a bit too much of a go-to scenario, though. Whenever I think about a story or a character, I do it in rounds of three. Sometimes four.

1st is “what is the logical/expecte/likely route to expect this to go in”

2nd is “what is a subversion or alternate, or inverse of that”

3rd is “what is the next pass After the obvious inverse, what lies outside of that dichotomy”

And 4th is a revision and refinement of 3.

This process helps me see things as they really are, rather than what would be expected of them or expected of a subversion of them. I take my writing very seriously, and thoroughness and experimentation are essential! I find it helps to separate my everyday thoughts, and then my thoughts about the way I think. My third thoughts watch the world and think all by themselves. And so on and so forth.

All of that to say, would max care to go out?? If class as a theme is introduced, I would probably use johnny as a vehicle to introduce it than have max initiate that on his own. Esp since the center of the story is the character study conflict romance. max would be nonchalant about it, maybe a little wistful. And Isabel is usually very lax and jokey, she’s just a strategy action whiz with a quick reaction time. She isn’t standoffish or paranoid, as it’s important to keep a rational and level head as a knight! The johnny incident is a major outlier. In her defense, she left Max’s room for 8 minutes, a relatively short period of time, and when she came back there was a burglar in her best friend/future fiancee/the next kings room. Fuck it, ill give Johnny a little pickpocket knife for fun. A sad 4 inch thing but a dagger nonetheless. I’d argue her reaction is justified. That was an extreme example though.

I cant think of what scenario would bring the 3 of them together yet. But if max did choose to go out, isabel wouldnt be on her toes constantly aware of Danger as much as she would just try her best to have his back. Max can make his own decisions, and there’s a weird confusing line between ‘do my job as a bodyguard and keep him physically safe’ vs ‘do my job as a friend and give him support/advice/space’ vs ‘do my job as his future partner and maybe even feel mildly possessive or jealous because… were gonna be married someday and my guts feel weird when i think about him crushing on other people’. Shes in a very unusual and confusing position!
